Title: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Arnold on August 21, 2009, 09:48:09 PM
Season 4 trailer is up on Adult Swim. (http://www.adultswim.com/video/?episodeID=8a250aae232d7b5101232eeeff310004)

Looks like #21 is going to have lots of screen time this season!

God damn I love this series, and season 4 looks awesome.

Also, it jumped to the footage from the Comicon panel after the trailer, which was fucking hilarious.  Watch it if you can.  I go to the adult swim panel every year I go, and its always god damn great, but couldn't make it this year (or the last two, because of being in another country)

Gyah! Thank god for internet streaming, or I'd be waiting for this to air in the UK for another 3 years. We've still only got Season 1 available on DVD here, and not even any release dates for Seasons 2 & 3. I'm not sure Season 3's even been broadcast here yet! I'm looking up the comiccon panel on youtube as the US adultswim site is being regionist with that footage for some reason.

They really need to make more Venture Bros. episodes.  13 of them go so fast and it's probably the best cartoon on TV right now.

Both the mythos and the humor was quite excellent, but the disjointed story format holds it back.  But DH & JP tend to the first episode as a prologue for the season and from that preservative this episode was monumental as it provides so much to jump off from.

Dude.

I'm not complaining as long as they stick to actually doing annual seasons.  They were on 2-2.5 years between seasons for a while.

Via my Facebook Adult Swim feed:

[quoteSomehow there was a hiccup with our west coast feed last night. So, our bad, west coast Venture fans. To make it up to you, we're showing the Season Four premiere Monday - Thursday this week at 12:30am. Or, if you can't wait to watch it on ...your mini-big screen at home: you can watch it online right now. Giddy-up:[/quote]

I think it's more likely they're doing it so you can figure out wtf was going on.  I was gratified by the final explanation of the money number that kept being flashed on screen. I had no idea what that was all about the first 20 mins and thought I'd missed something important.  I love "ooooooh" moments like that.

Captain Sunshine felt like going to the well one too many times, what with Sargeant Hatred's "problem."

I do really enjoy it when they let the Monarch cut loose and be an effective evil bastard.

All the Batman riffing took it to a different level. I didn't equate it with Hatred at all.

I enjoyed the episode but the whole subtlely gay superhero+sidekick theme just felt done to death already, if not by this show then by others.  Also, I second the monarch sentiment, he's actually one of the most 'pure' villains on the show, a throwback to cobra commander, skeletor, etc.

I took it completely different than that. Instead of a subtle gay subtext, you had massive, over the top gay context with no actual indication that it was sexual.  I thought it flipped it on its head in a very funny way.

Great episode.  However, I miss Brock!

Patrick Warburton has himself spread pretty thin between two different TV series and the movies/ Video Games he's doing on a regular basis these days, so it's probably that he couldn't fit in another season.

Yeah, the whole lube thing with Hank got me just because I had by that point fully expected some a$$r4p3 joke that never came. I'm looking forward to seeing a bit more of Sphinx and Brock probably more than anything else.

Okay, the Captain Sunshine episode is growing on me.

- I hadn't realized Kevin Conroy voiced Sunshine.  There's a great line from one of the convention panels from the creators that Conroy stopped at one point because he thought he sounded too Batman-y....  and the creators told him "No, that's fine.  In fact, try  to sound more like Batman!"

It makes the Hank line about Batman sooo much better.

- I read somewhere that the Monarch's killing of Wonderboy is foreshadowed way back in Season 1.  God damn, this show is awesome.

The whole Captain Sunshine thing was brilliant, especially the aftermath of his powers. Bunch of butterfly costume guys with their eyes smoking just made me giggle uncontrollably. But yeah, best joke was the lube line. It set up the predictable joke so much then paid off a completely different joke. This season has been strange without Brock, but still top notch.

In "Return To Spider Skull Island", Monarch is going down a checklist of orders with 21 and 24 to see which have been carried out.  One of those was returning the charred remains of Wonderboy to Captain Sunshine.

Holy hell. Someone pointed out that the 21's plan, "Eye for an I" is Exodus 21:24. That's fucking awesome.

Edit: Also it was awesome to see the Monarch actually bitch slap the moppets finally.

Another great episode.

The fact that all the minions are scared shitless of "General 21" now.
Hatred quoting The Time Machine.
The boys (and the henchmen) not recognizing the Monarch.
The Monarch scaring the shit out of the Moppets.

I cracked up at Dr Girlfriend feeding the Moppets under the table....  When they're walking off, one of the Moppets is licking his fingers.  Just a perfect image with how creepy/pervy the Moppets can be.

Wish list for the rest of the season:

- Return of King Gorilla
- Badass 21 has it out with Moppets
- Hank and Dean develop further into the "Bodyguard" and "Super-scientist" roles
- Fuck Dermott.  The character has potential, but he's never lived up to it.
- Some Order of the Triad loving.  Jefferson Twilight cracks me up.

Edit:

I'd love to see Triana's friend from the double-date episode show up as a villain's assistant or henchwoman.  I'd probably have to turn off the TV I'd be laughing so hard.

And more of the rubber-mask pirates that are now henching for Jonas Jr.  Fuck, I love those guys!

There were some good moments for Rusty, Dean, and Hank.

- Rusty actually did a hell of a job as a parent, and Dean stepped up rather than curling up in a ball as he is wont to do.
- I soooo want Hank to become more Batman.
- Phantom Limb going completely around the bend was decent.

LESS HATRED THE CRAZY PEDOPHILE.  It's just creepy.

There's no reason to blame Warburton.

From :  http://jacksonpublick.livejournal.com/

2. Brock's absence has nothing to do with Patrick Warburton. He didn't ask for more money, he's not too busy for us, he hasn't refused to come back or anything of the sort. It was a creative choice on our part, and Brock WILL be back in the show at some point. Just not this week. Or next.

This was an ep with quite a few funny one-liners/gags but plot wise wasn't much.

For some reason my favorite bit was the fact that the shoe was Dr. Girlfriend's.

You so rightly point out why even a weaker Venture episode is great viewing:  The depth.  The little in-jokes and one-liners that are spattered throughout that reward the assiduous viewer.  Rusty still calls the jumpsuits "speed suits", Dr. Girlfriend's shoe, the flashback to Sandow and Colonel Venture, the fact that "Chuck" proves his worth, Billy Quizboy wears the Rusty Venture pajamas, Phantom Limb calling himself the "Victor of the Battle of Cremation Creek".

Everything is so well set-up.

Can they really call it the second half of season 4 when it'll be something like nine months since the last new episode?  I just hope season 5 4.5 is better than season 4, which is the first season of Venture Bros. that was really disappointing.  They can start off by dumping Sgt. Hatred into a wood chipper.  Oh, and more Dr. Orpheus/Triad please!

The first half of season 4 was really good not quite season 3 good tho. I don't remember Sgt Hatred taking up that much screen time, but he is definitely the weakest link.     The #22 saga was inspired.

Considering it usually takes them 2-3 years to do a new season of Venture, 9 months to a half season sounds ahead of schedule.   :oh_i_see:

Season 4 was solid.  Season 3 was just so good, that it seemed a bit uninspired in comparison.  The only real misstep was Sgt. Hatred, and even then he had some good moments.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.

I give them a pass on Hatred only because Patrick Warburton was apparently really, really, REALLY busy.   If there's more Brock he must be down to only 2 "reallys."

Honestly, he deserves the title "hardest working man in show business" right now.  You hear him everywhere.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.

I thought the creators said they chose to push Brock to the side because of story reasons, not actor commitments.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Mattemeo on August 04, 2010, 09:22:24 AM
I don't hate Sgt. Hatred, but I do think he's a very good joke that's been told too many times now. The entire idea of Hatred is typically brilliant; reformed/relapsed paedophile supervillain nanny/bodyguard, it's just there's only so many ways to swing him, and they've done them twice over already.
Still, he's at least redeemable as a character, as opposed to the Murderous Moppets - who remain the only genuinely amoral/repugnant characters in Venture Bros. They're great, it's just they are utterly horrible in every way - unique in the roster. Either way, the return of Brock is something to be celebrated!

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: NowhereMan on August 05, 2010, 03:01:31 PM
I always though the moppets were there because they're so hateable. Fans hate them and it's one of the most obvious ways to make the Monarch sympathetic, he hates those little fuckers like any right minded human being should. Hell the fact they led to that scene where he bitches them out and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch (the woman that justified a holiday for the shift key) tells them to STFU when he's speaking made them worth it. Also last season brought us Neo-Sphinx, Neo-21 and Dr. Monstroso. It was awesome.

According to Doc and Justin, people either love or hate the moppets.  They talk about them quite often at the Comic-con and other panels, because the love/hate reaction at different venues is that strong.  Doc and Justin are both that funny in panels.  It's worth it to watch the panels, by the way... always hilarious.

I thought the creators said they chose to push Brock to the side because of story reasons, not actor commitments.

I don't recall hearing that, but I do remember hearing he simply wasn't available for a full season.  I could be insane, it's quite possible.

Looks like they added a bunch of new computer aided animation.

I have a soft spot for Hatred ever since that episode where he went in the jacuzzi and we found out the "H" on his face proceeded down the length of his body to spell out "HATRED".  That had me chuckling for days afterwards.

There was too much filler (music, unnecessarily long motorcycle scene) until Brock showed up!   Got MUCH better after that!  :)

Good start to the season. Lots of funny lines.

"So that's what happened to the 7's!"

Hatred getting hopped up on tranq darts and pure adrenaline was hilarious. Glad to see Brock back in some capacity and I love the Sphinx guys. Butter-glider was awesome, even the song.

Hank beating everyone of Sphinx's test was just hysterical.

"Batman is listed twice.

That's on purpose. Once for Golden Age Batman and the second time for Post-Crisis Batman."

So Batman.

I hated that they had to recast Dr. Impossible. Colbert did him so well, but I understand. The new guy is not quite so good.

The first 5 minutes of that episode had more funny than full episodes of many other series.  This season has been a little too self-referential and meta, though...  the episodes don't work unless you are into the continuity arc.

This last episode was hilarious. From Dr. Venture confessing to a Teddy Ruxpin to that banter between Brock and Hunter, to Henchman 1 being a badass, to Hank and Hatred's torture game, to the OSI's naked round table of useless villainy. I loved it when the shark guy tried to attack Brock and got hammered into the table. So much funny.

I've tried to get my wife to watch this show, but while watching an episode with her I realized that basically every single scene requires a lengthy explanation of backstory and that if you haven't watched it from ep 1 it is almost incomprehensible. That is quite an achievement for a cartoon.

Dr. Mrs. Monarch in a cheerleader outfit. Awwwww yeah!

That...  was probably the best episode yet this season.  It had the amazing depth that I love about the good Venture episodes...  Multiple intertwining storylines that could have individually made up at least two episodes get told quickly but fully in only one.  And the potential fallout!

- Orpheus was awesome, as always.
- I cracked up when the Moppets busted into the Monarch's room to find the bondage scene.
- Monarch fucking up trying to kill Venture in a hilarious way.
- Potentially Rusty might start to be more functional?  I like how the creators keep exploring what went on to make Rusty the fuckup he is today.
- The Hank & Dean zombies!
- I like the Shoreleave, Brock, and Hatred interactions.  Hatred makes a great semi-competent but a little loser-ish character....  much better than the one note pedo portrayal.

And next week, it looks like the return of Abagadro Monstroso.

Billy can be really great... but the character is too dependent on who they stick with him.  He works well with Rusty, and his origin episode was good.

He didn't work with Monstroso, outside of a few gags.

Good episode, but I don't think it is quite that high up on the funny ep list. Actually much more character development and plot than gags. Some great stuff though (maybe it being an hour made the really funny stuff seem a bit diluted). The various descriptions of the "Rusty Venture" was classic, can't wait to hear that unedited on the DVD (tons of bleeps in this to the point they referenced it in a bump).   Best callback IMO was the throw away reference to The Nozzle which is one of my favorite bits of VB nonsense.

Great news!

The way the last season wrapped up, it could easily have been a series finale...  I know Cartoon Network loves the Jackson and Doc, but I was worried they were burning out.  Now, let's hope that it takes less than three years for season five to grace the airwaves.

Doubtful. The article I read said they are "starting production" in June. Considering how long animation takes I doubt we'll see it anytime this year and well into the next. Frankly they can take as long as they want if they keep up the quality in my opinion.

There is a teaser trailer kicking around for the Halloween episode...  all I remember is White is dressed as David Bowie ( :awesome_for_real:) and a group of regulars is taking bets on what part of the compounds security will chase off trick-or-treaters.  The Halloween episode is chronologically from midway through season five in production, so supposedly there are some character changes that will seem odd.

Youtube has a few of Doc Hammer and Justin Publick's con appearances.  They are generally pretty awesome if you have some time to kill.

Yah, I dunno.  I gave up on the Venture Bros. after it stopped coming out regularly.  It was about six months after it did, that I finally said screw it.   I mean, it's kind'a like BattleStar Galactica.  (the new one)   You see an advertisement, comes on Friday nights at 10.  You're sitting there waiting around on Friday 'till 2:30am (it's Saturday by then), and nothing even about the show comes on.

Finally you just get tired of it and say fuck it.  You'll either see the show when it comes out on DVD or you won't, but it's no huge loss.

If you've actually ever either not made or canceled plans on a Friday night to sit at home and hope that a cartoon comes on at 10, it's a pretty safe assumption that the screwing you got was the only screwing you could possibly hope for.

Also, it's the future, we have things like on-screen guides with the next 2 weeks of programming mapped out, and DVRs that automatically record new episodes of shows you tell it to whenever they come on.  I mean holy fuck dude, we all wish that we could get new episodes of the Venture Bros already (and The Boondocks, new season in 2012 my ass, fuck you adult swim!), but f13 is the last place that you're going to get people sympathizing with you over wasted evenings due to your poor choice in antiquated television watching technology.  I'd suggest you at least invest in a goddamn TV guide, either that or go find some amish dudes who'll quietly nod in agreement while you complain about how inconsiderate drivers keep scaring your horse as they shout profanities and honk angrily when they get stuck behind your buggy doing 3mph on a 55mph road.

Somehow I had never seen the Venture Bros, though various friends had raved about it over the years... when somebody shared the season 1-4 recap a couple weeks ago, I decided to check it out (without watching the recap, didn't want to spoil the fun).  Since them I've ended up watching all four seasons and wow this is goddamn brilliant stuff.  Got really lucky to find out how great it is just before season five started...

Quote
Hank: "Are you okay?  Dr. O said you're probably insane now and that you'll never be the same?"

Doc Venture: "Are you kidding?" *laughs*

Doc Venture: "Okay, I'm just turning sixteen and having a birthday pool party.  My father invites every girl he knows, and I'm not talking about girls my age.  No, not Jonas.  He invites Playboy Bunnies and models and I think actual whores, you know real prostitutes.  So there I am in my giant bathing suit with nervous puberty oozing out of my gigantic pores.  Just awful.  So, the band suddenly stops playing and I hear 'and now, the man of the hour, Rusty Venture.'  All eyes one me, right?  Then suddenly, almost predictably, the Action Man shoots my groin with the shrink ray right as that fucking jackass Colonel Gentleman pulls my shorts down."

Hank: "Wow, that's like a nightmare."

Doc Venture: "Oh no, no.  What I went through today was 'like a nightmare', what happened when I was sixteen, THAT is my LIFE."

It really is brilliant stuff. Tonight had references to Brady Bunch, Hart to Hart, Return of the Jedi, Soylent Green, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Battlestar Galactica, Trek, Buck Rodgers, and Planet of the Apes (just off the top of my head). Plus "sniffing" a chastity belt, man tits, etc. etc.  Just unreal.

EDIT: Oh, and Game of Thrones, Rocky, Gremlins, LoTR.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Quinton on June 02, 2013, 11:52:23 PM
I love the crazy extended continuity -- a character that shows up for 10 seconds as (apparently) a throwaway joke or is referred to offscreen turns up later in a season or a following season as a major player in the venture-verse, all the little nods to stuff throughout -- it's a show that really rewards you for paying attention.   Also, amazingly, it has really really few bad episodes -- "Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner?" sticks out in my mind as one that was pretty mediocre, but there have only been a couple.  I'm glad they take their time making these, because the results are clearly worth it.

EDIT: That was a suitably epic start to season five.

EDIT2: Wow, AdultSwim published S05E01 on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug3NUpBmw_g

Tank Top was pretty good too. Plus, the "dog" was actually a dude in a dog costume.

Exactly! It kinda reminded me of Ted (the bear psycho). But I wonder where the dog went because we did not see him with the others later on.

So  many interesting side characters..

I thought it might have been 6-Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman, but that's not it. We've already seen Steve Austin in an earlier episode a few seasons back. I couldn't figure out who they were supposed to be.

Another great episode though. The show definitely needs more Brock.

I think she was a riff on Scarlett.

Oh, and RIP Monstroso (?).

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Merusk on July 02, 2013, 03:01:21 PM
Yeah she was a rip on Scarlett, as shown by her accent and giant chest.  No clue why she was blonde other than 1) making her a redhead is too on-the-nose and 2) Scarlett was called Scarlett because of her red hair. So what was the woman's name? Some sort of blonde joke spinoff?  I'll have to go back and check it out because I can't recall.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Abagadro on July 02, 2013, 03:11:26 PM
Amber Gold. She makes a crack when her wig comes off that she wears it so her name isn't Dishwasher Blonde.

The guys name is Headshot.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Merusk on July 02, 2013, 04:23:44 PM
There ya go then, totally spelled it out for us.

Though Headshot should be like "Earl" or "Jack" or "Wayne" since Scarlet was always paired with Duke, who wasn't a Glam-man like Headshot implies.  /nitpick.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Abagadro on July 02, 2013, 04:59:35 PM
Headshot is a sniper so it has a nice double meaning.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Merusk on July 02, 2013, 05:25:09 PM
Clearly I missed more than I thought by staying up that late to watch. I'll have to catch it on the DVR.  So not a direct analog to Duke, but close enough to be amusing.  I like the double joke better.

Also I wonder if Vendata:

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Merusk on July 19, 2013, 07:25:13 AM
Holy crap I'd forgotten his parents died in a plane crash.

The mumblings of Vendata were plane-crash related and since they love being self-referential you're probably right.  Heh, the Venture Bros wiki is also updated with this speculation.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Miasma on July 19, 2013, 01:36:24 PM
The first statement he makes is robocop and the plane crash reference is from the six million dollar man.  I don't think he has anything to do with the monarch.

I'd like to know how Venture survives that ending.  I assumed the after titles would deal with that but it was Phantom Limb.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Merusk on July 19, 2013, 01:43:09 PM
It'd be 6 million dollar man if it were the ramblings of a test pilot.  He mumbles about finding his wife, though.  We'll see in another 3 years, I imagine.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Abagadro on July 19, 2013, 01:51:07 PM
Ya, they've been dropping hints like the photo several eps ago of Monarch's dad with Jonas.

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.

Actually, the Spandau Ballet reference was wrong. OMD did "If you leave".

Title: Re: The Venture Bros.
Post by: Goldenmean on February 14, 2016, 10:38:02 AM
Spandau Ballet did however do "Only When You Leave", and also appeared on a John Hughes soundtrack, and St. Cloud is meant to be a bit of a wanna-be poser character who just buys his way into the fandoms he professes to love, so that might have been an intentional mistake to show that aspect of his character. Strange that Billy and White didn't call him on that if that's the case though.

Not necessarily. We know who RAISED the Monarch as his dad, but they just showed Blue Morpho and Jonas having group sex (and things like "key parties" have been mentioned before in the show), so its actually more likely that if he is a half-brother it is through Jonas.

I'm betting on half-brother, seeing as how the Monarch thought one of those was women in the VTR was his mom. EDIT: Also, the pointy beard.

I'll have to watch it again.

Oh, and Ironwood. I just got the Spandau reference you made with Gold. The coffee just kicked in. Well played, sir.

Brick jokes a speciality.  There are still a couple floating around here from ages ago.

Know what.. I'm more convinced that Morpho is Rusty's dad. JJ was just some aberration of that orgy creating a fraternal twin Rusty consumed in the womb.

Rusty's mentioned a few times his dad's stuff wouldn't recognize him.

* PLOP *

God, I just cackled throughout the last half of this episode.

The same damn hole. I died at that. I hope it continues to swallow villains and they make some 300 or Well of Souls reference.

This show is fucking amazing. What kind of mad genius does it take to combine The Legion of Doom and The Factory and come up with characters that riff on BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

Lex Luthor as Andy Warhol. I almost screamed laughing when the Monarch dropped the detonator. The way they build each episode up to a punchline like that is just brilliant.

There were some Doom Patrol nods in there also. And agreed, that was some of their best mashup characters since the Scooby-Doo serial killers way back when.

My only complaint is last night was an odd place to leave the season until the next one. No real resolution to anything, making this whole season more of a setup for what I assume to be next seasons punchline.

It's a petty complaint though and that was an amazing episode.

Last week's was supposed to be the season finale. Things got all fucked up in the production schedule per an interview. With this show you just need to ignore the usual rules when it comes to seasons, premiers, finales, etc.  Just enjoy it on an episode to episode basis and then rewatch it in toto when it is done and on DVD.  I've really liked this season. Some really good shit and this episode was amazing. Clancy Brown is a god damned national treasure.

So, it's been a while, and apparently, it's gonna be a while longer.

AS played a bumper the other night for those that haven't entirely given up hope.

That is the very definition of "diving into the deep end".  If you aren't an obsessive you have no idea WTF is going on. I loved it.

I am so glad I heard season seven was on its way and rewatched the whole series ahead of time.

I am really liking this start to season seven, which, in true Venture Bros style probably would make more sense as the finale of season six...

That may have been the densest 90 minutes of television I've ever seen, and I loved every goddamn minute of it.

Those 3 episodes seem like they should have been the end of last season, but that's how this show rolls I guess.

New favorite gag character: Hate-Bit.

Amazing first episode. Can't wait to get some time free again to dig into the others!

It's just incredible they have been able to keep this series going for so long and develop it to where it is.

The fuckwits at Adult Swim have canceled the show.  I'm inconsolable. The guys put together one of the most genius and subversive shows in a generation and the dipshits won't let them finish it on their terms despite them being deep into writing season 8. FUCK. FUCK 2020. FUCKITY FUCK FUCK FUCK.

AS is saying they want Venture to continue as well...  lots of speculation that AT&T is slashing budgets everywhere.

HBO Max has been thrown around since they have resurrected some other animated stuff and is part of the same ownership (AT&T) as Cartoon Network, but the way the creators are talking about it all it seems basically dead-dead rather than mostly-dead.
