Title: BlizzCon 2009
Post by: Nonentity on March 17, 2009, 11:51:39 AM
I'll be there, as usual.

Who else is going?

Intend to, if I can get tickets.

Yeah - after last year's debacle, I'm sure they'll throw lots of money at it to get it sorted out.

They're gonna outgrow the Anaheim Convention Center at some point.

I'm buying my rooms at the Hilton across the walkway, so I don't have to walk three blocks back to the hotel like last time. That was no fun.

Nuh uh!

I'm in talks with my pal to stay for Saturday night as well, to have a longer love fest with my fellow WoW players.

If I can get tickets I'll be coming.

For those of you who have been to previous ones, is there 'stuff' to do all night, or does it pretty much close down?

How's the costuming?  How does it compare with, say an anime convention, since that is a point of reference I know?

The vast majority of people are not in costume. The people that ARE in costume, were pretty much all out WTF in terms of effort level though. I can't give you an anime convention comparison as I've never been to one.

Koyasha: my recollection is the hall closed at midnight? I think?

Yeah - I've been every year. The people who do end up cosplaying there have seriously insane costumes. Not that I keep track of cosplay culture or anything, but some of these guys (and girls) really go all out.

One of my favorite costumes from last year was this girl - http://www.thenonentity.com/blizzcon3.jpg - she had this costume of the Raven Lord, Anzu. The picture really doesn't do it justice, she had the whole bird animation thing down, as weird as that sounds.

I will probably go again this year assuming I win the fail bot lottery.

There was also that creepy-ass undead girl who had the walk down perfectly. She was MY favorite.

Also, I think the hall closed at 10, not midnight, but still, it was pretty late.

Yeah - http://www.thenonentity.com/blizzcon1.jpg - the one on the right. I managed to get a picture with her and her draenei friend. She was terrifying. I'm sure she's clinically insane, but she's awesome.

It was her sister if I remember what I read elsewhere correctly.  They were both good costumes.

Although I was thinking about it, I'm going to pass this year.  If I do any costume, I'd like to finish up my renfest one based on a Disciple of Khaine and the trip will be a lot cheaper.

Those are stunningly good but I can't help but feel someone is going to get accidentally injured or feel the impact is lessened since he didn't really MAKE the costume...

... feel the impact is lessened since he didn't really MAKE the costume...
This.

Plus I don't see any con letting those items in unless they're going on a display isolated from real people.  Had he commissioned them being made from plastics sure.  Otherwise I think it's even more nerdy than the people who bought Frostmourne.

Frostmourne shouldn't be something that arrives in the mail. You seek it out or create it, like in the event of a zombie apocalypse! That's what I would do anyways.

I got my tickets ordered yesterday also.  Glad their system didn't screw up completely this year.

Ironic considering my interest in WoW is dwindling, and I was never much for Starcraft, but eh.  Maybe I'll be interested in WoW again by the time it comes around, but at least whatever they have about Diablo 3 should be interesting.

Ticket fail. :(

I am enlisting some extra people to camp the queue with me on the 30th.

Title: Re: BlizzCon 2009
Post by: Koyasha on May 18, 2009, 09:59:57 PM
If it's the same as last time, they'll go on sale about 2 minutes before time (as synchronized to time.windows.com) cause the clock was 9:58 when I hit refresh and the page came up.

Unfortunately I expect the page-camping to be stronger on the 30th, so good luck.

Ing's was a cache server fail. We were in IRC, two of us got immediate tickets on refreshing, Ing's page still displayed not available for a good 5 minutes after we'd finished checking out.

He is talking about the shield weighing 20 pounds and how it was tiring him out after 30 minutes... Doesn't he realize that the armour is going to add another 40 pounds to that, if not more? I seriously doubt the guy who is making it is going to know how to make armour that hangs on the body correctly, let alone the guy ordering it knowing how to put it on.

Foam and foam-rubber would have been better choices. For all of it. He should have called up GWAR and found out who makes their costumes and hired them to make it.

For those who missed the email, you can buy all the stuff that will be available at the con ahead of time on a special sale, starting August 5th at 10am and ending August 7th at 10am.

It'll be at http://www.blizzard.com/store/.

That's actually really damn good news, as the first hour or two of any given BlizzCon was always given up to standing in line to buy stuff before the good stuff was sold out.

Maybe it was just due to the increased amount of people, but I felt a much smaller cosplay presence this year than I had any other year. It pretty much felt like they showed up, went to the costume contest, and then disappeared.

I guess they're bored of it? I dunno.

I am wondering if part of it was because the con was in August this time, and it was just too warm between that and the extra people heating the rooms up for them to be comfortable walking around in costume the whole time. It was a LOT hotter inside the convention center this time, I was in a T Shirt the whole time, while last year it actually got cool enough to put on a sweatshirt inside.

But yeah there were way way less costumed people walking around in general.

Pretty famous sideboob if that's what you're after.

I was about to ask if that was the WoWPorn chick.

#3 of the first set was a finalist in the costume contest.  that picture doesn't do her justice, go watch the youtube vid of the finals. She's a lot hotter than the pic belies.

My favorite guys were the ones dressed up like TF2 spies, only wearing Orc and Night Elf paper masks.

The fact you didn't like #3 makes me wonder where the hell your brain's at!

I somehow missed #3 entirely and that, combined with the at least one hot chick you posted in the second series of photos, has lead me to do a double negative inverted reversal of my previous post and ask for you to go ahead and continue posting pics.

Did anyone get the Starcraft II poker set? Looks nifty.

No, but it's too pretty looking. I'd never want to play poker with them.

I'm thinking of playing pokcosplayer.

Yeah, they did an extended interview on the live feed with the guy who designed it.  They did things like tape Raynor's face over one of the kings and Kerrigan on one of the queens. (bonus points if it's the QoSpades)  There's cards that form a mosaic picture and other nifty things.  The designer said he hoped that players would continue the motif and customize the cards as they used the set.  I chuckled thinking about how at least 60% of them will never leave their shrinkwrap/ cases.

The first three of the first set are pretty good.  Alexstraza is ok, but adding wings where they don't belong (she doesn't have wings in her humanoid form) loses it points with me.  The paladin seems nice, but something also seems off about her.  Still, good.  All the elf ears look pretty bad, but then when you're dealing with ears as long as elves in Warcraft have them, it's hard NOT to look bad if you try to make the things in reality.  Only the girl in the sideboob shot seems to have somewhat decent ears.  Although the rest of her costume I don't recognize at all.

I thought all three of the runners up in the costume contest were better than the one who took 3rd place.  The winner definitely deserved it, though.  And Kel'thuzad was damn good, although there were some cardboard flaps showing that hurt it.

Alexstraza is also about twelve feet tall and that girl doesn't look anywhere neart that.  FAIL!

There were two or three different Alexstraszas. That one posted above was not the best one.
