Cassinit snapped this gorgeous shot in orbit around Saturn. The blue colors are caused by light scatteing at just the right angle off the upper surface of Saturn's atmopshere. The varying shading is actually shadows cast by Saturn's rings onto the clouds below, with part of the A ring visible in the foreground. They released a new picture of Titan a few days ago, too: (http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/images/titan/images/PIA06141.jpg) This is the surface as viewed at wavelengths that render most of the clouds invisible, save for the bright ones down near the south pole. The true nature of the surface features being revealed below remain a mystery. Bruce |
