Title: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Moaner on February 06, 2009, 01:27:12 PM This is the first time I've done anything like this, so no promises. I plan to update this thread (as time permits) until my little Spriggan is dead or I recover the Orb of Zot.
Happy Hedonist started life as a level 1 Spriggan Stalker. I had started playing him before Schild created the Radicalthon, so this initial post will be a summary of what my little shit head has been up to thus far. Here is a current char dump. So far Happy Hedonist has stabbed, poisoned, and confused his way to the lair level 3. My current plan is to grind my way through the lair and then head back to the Orcish Mines, which I skipped. After clearing the mines I will head towards the swamp in hopes of recovering my first rune. I will start doing more screenshots as I progress, but right now I only have a couple. Here we see HH's initial start. (http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt215/saarsena/HH_start.jpg) And here is my prized possession at the moment. Now I just have to decide as to whether I want invisibility or teleport other next. (http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt215/saarsena/bookofpower.jpg) This is HH right now. (http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt215/saarsena/current.jpg) Here's hoping that ghost doesn't fuck me up and my next post is not my last! Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Moaner on February 06, 2009, 03:43:07 PM Well fuck! I killed my ghost with the help of a wand of fire, worked my way to lair level 7, and then proceeded to get ass-raped by a whole lot of yaks backed by brown snakes and giant frogs. This game is hard. I haven't quite decided what my next class/combo is going to be but I'm leaning towards deep elf conjurer.

Also, Orc Priest of Beogh, leading around hordes of adoring orcs is hella sweet! The ones that survive will gain xp/classes and get names. Also Also, Sludge Elf Transmuter works pretty well, and is a bit of a different experience. Exploding potions and blade hands. I was surrounded by about 6 yaks and several other snakes and such without enough mana to blink. Getting killed by a herbivore... grrr.
Beware to all, lair 6+ seems to be chocked full of mean shit. I just lost another character on lair level 8 last night. I'm going to do another thread soon, probably next week. I'm deciding between a Vampire Enchanter and a Deep Elf Conjurer. Also, I  DCSS. I haven't been this addicted to a game since EQ, no shit. Went down the stairs smack in the middle of 3 death yaks and 3 blink frogs. If it wasn't for lucky rolls w/mephitic cloud, I would have met my end right there too. Death Yaks do in fact suck.

Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 11, 2009, 01:04:54 PM Personally, I usually get killed by some ogre or named guy (who turns invisible and rapes my face). I'm at the point where I'm just going to run from Ogres. I refuse to play Spriggans though.
I might be missing something, but I am not dominating this game by any means. I throw lots of shit, try kiting but in the end something dumb always gets me. It's like I'm missing one thing, some ability I don't know about and then I would be awesome for reals! Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: tazelbain on February 11, 2009, 03:40:33 PM Sigmund sucks ass, especial on level 2. At lunch I killed him by making him chase me down a hall and just shot arrows down hall. In spite of being invisible, the arrows still hit him.
Is there a way for people who don't start with books can use the books they find? I think it depends on the class and the book. For instance my Spriggan Stalker could read the 'Book of Power' I found. Yeah, you have to read scrolls until you gain the Spellcasting skill. Be sure to read the scrolls while you have available xp. So I finally got my Conj a see invisible item, took a scroll of acquirement to do it. The elf rapeage has been commencing steadily. Fireball and Mehpitic Cloud are excellent for elf raping. My main hint for starting: Use auto explore
] I think the only reason I got as far as I did with my conjurer was a lucky roll got me a dagger of protection (+5 AC) early on. Here he is, if anyone is interested. Yeah, I have been doing all that. Maybe I'm just getting unlucky or choosing shit classes. Half the time I random it for LOLs Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 13, 2009, 07:03:15 AM Well, tried Deep Elf Conjurer...got like a 10k score so I feel better.
Ended up dying to 1 swing from a hill giant...From full to dead. I had SOOOO many ways I coulda got out of that situation, yet I tried for one more cast, not expecting the 45 point swing. I had 44 health. Lesson learned. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on February 13, 2009, 09:12:37 AM Well, tried Deep Elf Conjurer...got like a 10k score so I feel better. Ended up dying to 1 swing from a hill giant...From full to dead. I had SOOOO many ways I coulda got out of that situation, yet I tried for one more cast, not expecting the 45 point swing. I had 44 health. Lesson learned. That's harsh. Post up the Morgue file if you don't mind... Most damage I've taken so far in 1 shot was from an Elven Sorc on L7 of Elven Halls, he throws some fire spell that does 65+ thru 2 levels of fire resist. Ouch. The second worst was from some elf with a lightning bolt that hit me 3 times off one cast. Learned that lesson, watch how you stand in relation to things that might throw spells that bounce off walls. But somehow my guy still lives on, getting so I don't want to play him because I know death is just around the corner. Is it not true that Mephitic Cloud is the best thing ever? Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 13, 2009, 09:42:33 AM Also, I might have totally messed up by sticking with a +1 robe. How does armor/weapons effect your spellcasting?
And yes....confusing nearing anything then nuking the fuck out of them is great. I found a transmutation book I think it was that allowed me to learn blink and some other stuff, and a war chant book that gave me haste and repel missiles. I was rockin. Oh well. I'll post the morgue file tonight. I also, throughout that whole time, never found a single ID scroll. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on February 13, 2009, 10:12:07 AM I believe that Leather and Robes are the same for casting, Heavy armor(pretty much anything else) makes casting "slightly more difficult" depending on your armor skill (which you get when you wear heavy armor). What that means exactly I'm not too sure of, I've been sticking with the light stuff. Pretty sure weapons don't effect casting at all.
Did you find yourself using Haste a lot? How bad is the magical contamination from it? I am having trouble deciding if I want a direct damage spell next or Haste. Right now I regularly use fireball on single enemies because it's my highest damage spell, but that's rather wasteful. No ID scrolls is a royal PITA. FYI for some reason Identify is very hard to cast, I had to get my divination up to 8 or so before I had a fair chance to cast it, and it still failed all the time. Fireball (same level) had a good or excellent cast chance when my fire magic was at the same level. OTOH, it would be worth it if you had no id scrolls, and the spell I used to get Div way up there (detect creatures) is actually extremely useful, it tells you where every creature is on the level and what basic sort of creature they are. Another hint for casters is to be sure and get some Fighting skill. You can hit plants to get to level 2 in it, and that's a decent chunk of bonus hps. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 13, 2009, 10:25:36 AM I had a whip of electrocution that kicked some ass too. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Moaner on February 13, 2009, 11:59:41 AM I've spent the last couple days trying to get a Minotaur Berserker past level 5. Ranged/Magic classes seem much easier to get up and running. It could be the fact I'm sick as fuck and not thinking clearly, but I'm definitely having a more difficult time with melee classes. It seems you really have to get lucky on drops to stand a chance whereas a ranged class can just kite.
My current run is looking promising, finally, and I'm hoping this all pays off a little later. I haven't been looking at many spoilers so I'm hoping I get some pretty nice abilities soon. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 13, 2009, 12:08:11 PM Best I did was like a level 7 Chaos Knight, and that was because I was ole boy's 'plaything' and he gave me a demon that raped a few tough monsters for me. Then fucked with me, took my awesome scythe and animated it against me, i had to use a tele scroll to escape.
I think that should be the next challenge to all! Make a bad ass melee guy. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on February 13, 2009, 12:22:56 PM I think a straight melee is def. doomed to failure, you need some ranged attack. There's just too much stuff that is too risky to fight in straight melee when you first run into it, especially at the lower levels.
Bows are excellent and plentiful once you bash some elves, blowguns use dart skill and poisonate everything, also plentiful if you see more than a few kobolds. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: UnwashedMasses on February 13, 2009, 12:30:56 PM I think a straight melee is def. doomed to failure, you need some ranged attack. There's just too much stuff that is too risky to fight in straight melee when you first run into it, especially at the lower levels. Getting dusted as a human fighter (totally original, I know). Farthest I got was level 5. Ogres for the lose at close range. Still have a sense of "No!!!!!one!!" at the permadeath screen. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Raging Turtle on February 13, 2009, 01:09:16 PM Am playing the fuck out of this game.
I've had luck with demonspawn Death Knights (of Yre-whatever). I just pick up all the arrows and bolts and use the first bow or crossbow I find. A few lucky demonspawn mutations can make it a lot easier, and have a couple pet zombies running around can buy some critical extra time. Farthest I've gotten is with a draconian wizard who turned grey at 7 (actually the only drac I've had live long enough to change) - probably the best thing that could have happened, with the extra hp and ac. Level 14, baby! ... and then I ran out of mp in the middle of a crowd. While starving. :uhrr: Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Aez on February 13, 2009, 02:56:10 PM Ok, having fun with a Demi-God Reaver. How do I equip my second hand (d)?
Anyone tried a Warper? Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on February 13, 2009, 03:15:11 PM Equip second hand? Not sure I follow, this game doesn't have dual wield afaik. If you mean a 2 handed weapon, that is automatic.
I've tried a spriggan warper, found the translocate school to be lacking. In order to control a casted blink, you have to have teleport control active and even then it's a crap shoot. I'm bitter because I actually got pretty far and when I needed to blink it failed 2 times in a row, apparently because it couldn't place me in the direction I was trying to blink or somesuch. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Aez on February 13, 2009, 03:19:59 PM I talking about the second weapon. Like a dagger, the one you will throw and use to cut corpse. I wanted cut a corpse with a knife since the description said it was good at it. It always use my equiped dagger instead.

I'm learning there's a lot more hidden doors (occasionally with lewts behind them) than I previously thought. There's a Traps and Doors skill- you can practice by hitting Control-(movement) towards a trap to try to disarm it. Make sure you have experience in your pool and that your health is high... failing a trap disarm means setting off the trap. This is Aez the Grappler, my Ghoul Monk, just after I killed and looted Sigmund. The fight was really fun, we both drank invisibility potion, Sigmund fired his staff at random a couple of time but didn't hit me. I don't know which skill he had but he was able to follow me an shot his wand in my general direction even if I was invisible. I ran down a narrow corridor and shotted back in the empty corridor with my wand of fire. It killed invisible Sigmund. Now I have his +0 robe has a trophy! Too bad he didn't leave a corpse so I could eat him. My Ghouls Monk is pretty neat and very easy to play. I run around with decent sneak and simply beat everything to death, then I eat them. I'm still standing at lvl 8. Ogre are a joke. Eating raw and rotted flesh replenish your health. An added bonus is the fight descriptions : I claw, head butt and kick. 2 annoyances so far : It seems like I'm getting less and less corpses. Maybe 1 out of 4 monster leave a corpse. I have an annoying character description which says that my flesh is rotting faster than usual and I have no idea how to return to normal. I believe you could have used a wand/potion of healing at full health to stop the excess rotting. Invisible for you = extra dodge chance and monsters cannot target you accurately with ranged weapons, they still mostly know where you are and can see you... occasionally if you're away from them they'll switch back to ! status where they haven't noticed you. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Raging Turtle on February 17, 2009, 09:30:53 AM My best character in a while, a level 10 Demonspawn Death Knight. In addition to the normal zombie horde, Yred has given him a flayed ghost and two wights for company. The wights don't last long but the ghost is ripping through everything. The 3/4 longsword of freezing doesn't hurt either.
Predict his death now! Edit: Dead two minutes later. I am no longer going to talk about still living characters here :ye_gods: Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 17, 2009, 10:36:24 AM Mountain Dwarf Beserker is fun, but I get to like Level 7-8 (char not dungeon) and I inevitably bite off more than I can crew and the slowness effect after zerking owns me. Fun combo though, I recommend it! Got to about 3k.
Lately, I avoid casting classes. After Deep Elf Conjurer, they just seem OP. I wanna get a real meleer to 10k. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: tazelbain on February 17, 2009, 10:48:31 AM I have been using "Random Good" for a while now. 2700 is my record.

Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Merusk on February 17, 2009, 03:19:48 PM Damnit.. I cleared the first level with my Minotaur Death Knight and had a nice army of 6 zombies following me around. I was feeling pretty badass. "This game isn't so hard" I thought. "I don't see why everyone's dying so quickly."
Then I discovered the zombies don't take stairs with you and was killed by a snake on the first 5 tiles of level 2. :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: tazelbain on February 17, 2009, 03:23:46 PM They will follow if they are on adjacent tiles. Found a +7/+4, +7 AC axe on D5 that's helped quite a bit. The undead entourage is currently ripping apart anythat that moves, usually before I can reach it myself.
Also found a whole bunch of spellbooks, and am wondering if I should invest some exp in a few spells with what's currently a pure melee character. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 19, 2009, 09:17:25 AM That axe is fuckin insane man. Probably does other shit too. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: tazelbain on February 19, 2009, 09:28:38 AM I want to be less sucky at this I have a few strategy questions.
It becoming quite clear the almost every character needs a ranged weapon. The advantages of the different types of ranged weapons? Managing skills. An tips besides turning off the ones you don't wish to practice? Should I ignore the extremely difficult fights or will that screw me on xp? Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Raging Turtle on February 19, 2009, 10:34:48 AM Fought a dragon... and zombiefied it after I killed it :awesome_for_real: Then a hydra re-killed the dragon and all my followers, barely noticed repeated blasts from a wand of disintegration... so I got the hell out of there. Will return in a few more levels. Now to the Orcish mines! If I can find them, that is; I seemed to have missed them on the way down.
Quote It becoming quite clear the almost every character needs a ranged weapon. The advantages of this of the different types? My current melee mainly uses ranged to take down fleeing enemies or to plick when my undead hordes are attacking something scary. I was lucky to find a bow of Flame, but even darts will do if you don't have anything else. Notice that darts have the advantage over blowguns/bows/slings (all of which seem fine to me) in that you don't have to take a turn to equip something new. Poison (needles, darts, whatever) is nice for chasing down creatures because it'll often kill a weak creature even if it manages to get offscreen. Also, hand crossbows use darts, not bolts, and no doubt make them more effective. Quote Managing skills. An tips besides turning off the ones you don't wish to practice? Not sure. I think this matters more for the caster types but my don't usually make it past level 6 or so, probably because I don't use the deep elves. :uhrr: Quote Should I ignore the extremely difficult fights or will that screw me on xp? Avoid fights where you aren't sure if you can win, especially against a named or particulary nasty critter. You can always come back when tougher and take them. Motherfreaking Sigmund occasionally shows up on the second level and there are some characters that I'd rather not face his invisible scyth attacks with at that point. Also, just because you see the entrance to the dungeon doesn't mean it's a good idea to enter. Case in point: The Orcish Mines. When you first see it, you're almost definitely not strong enough to enter it. Go clear a few more levels and go back. Conversely, you should be able to walk into the Lair and clear most of it when you find the entrance. The wiki here is full of good info: http://www.chaosforge.org/crawl/index.php?title=CrawlWiki (http://www.chaosforge.org/crawl/index.php?title=CrawlWiki) Edit: Holy crap my Drain Life ability just killed 9 orcs at once. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Raging Turtle on February 20, 2009, 05:13:13 AM It was good while it lasted. Survived another dragon and even getting tossed into the abyss (where I found some 'bloodstained plate mail' that I'm pretty sure was awesome but it was too heavy to carry AND run away from everything). Also found an very nice randart amulet.
Then I got caught between a rock and a hard place. Or rather, a Stone Giant zombie and a shapeshifter Iron Troll. Almost killed the troll, couldn't even scratch the stone giant. :uhrr: Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on February 20, 2009, 06:16:51 AM Holy fuck dude...thats a helluva run.

Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: tazelbain on February 22, 2009, 08:22:48 PM Finally had a decent run. Made a mistake at the end not healing up. Fireball is also very nice, 3x3 explosion with very nice damage. You don't actually have to hit an enemy to detonate it, so you usually can hit multiple enemies with it. Earth is a good skill to try to get, as the big single target unresisbable damage spells are earth based. Personally I would probably go with the fire tree first, especially if you can find Sticky Flame, then go earth later on. Raging Turtle: Nice run! I was rolling the dice and trying random unidentified scrolls and happened upon a scroll of fear which scared the hell out of my orc army. My army scattered and within a few turns surrounded and viciously beat me to death. Hurray! Wish i could find decent plate+shield+something gormaund, lots of AC seems to be pretty critical and food becomes a serious issue in places like the orc mines. here is my best run to date:

Chop (c) up an orc, eat a piece (only possible when your character is at least hungry), if it makes you sick, eat the next piece and when you run out try another orc. I'm pretty sure all sickness does is occasionally give you some temporary stat loss. You're right that there's no benefit in eating food that makes you sick, but orc flesh only makes you sick some of the time, so it's worth chopping and tasting till you find a piece that's good. Same as jackals or goblins or numerous other critters. Some are always poisonous, like kobolds and hydras, and some like (brown) rats and bats are always fine. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on March 05, 2009, 08:42:32 AM You had a +2 +1 prot flail....thats like 5 ac isnt it? wield that bitch :) how does that work with weapons training I was using axes only, if i start training other weapons does that leave less training points to be spent on other stuff? Yes, this is true. But usually at some point in these crawls you will find some artifact weapon or really good one you havent specialized in, and you oughta change. I usually try on every runed weapon (as long as I have a detect or remove curse scroll) just to see if they are Draining, Crushing, speed, freezing, etc. Once I find one, I use my enchant scrolls and start fighting with them. Strangely named armor/weapons are usually artifacts, with crazy stuff. See: Polished Ring Mail or Slimy Mace. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on March 05, 2009, 08:47:40 AM I had an awesome Hill Orc berserker I got killed by changing my armor at the wrong time.
I found an Amulet of Resist Slowing early on, which means after my berserk wore off I was still in fast mode, and never went to slow. It was stupid good. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: lamaros on March 09, 2009, 08:55:56 AM I made a few characters and got owned, fast, so I thought I'd do the tutorial and learn myself something at least. Cleared out the first level of the Orc mine, had three spellboks, was just ranging everything to death.. decided to take that last spell shot at killing the near dead ogre rather than run for the stairs.. one hit dead!
And so far my best character... :( Trying a Vampire Assassin. I like the Vampire mechanics, though I'm not sure if they procress much beyond level 5 where you get to make your own blood potions. Been absolutly shafted with equipment drops on my recent run. Was getting frantic when I got down to level 4 and still hadn't found a scroll to remove the cursed tele ring I'd thrown on, but found one in the end. Though maybe not having good equipment is a blessing, the previous game i found a +6 prot ring on level two, then got destroyed on level 3... Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on March 09, 2009, 06:15:28 PM The fact that vamps cannot starve does make them somewhat attractive, and there is something about the less blood you have, the stronger you get, but I've never really tried one so not too sure.
Stealth doesn't seem all that effective in this game however, once you start getting deper, no matter how good your stealth is, things will invariably notice you before you get close enough to stick the knife in. My best char had 2 arts of +stealth and level 6 stealth on top of that, and I still rarely could get close enough to surprise anything. Good way to get fairly deep easily is play a troll berserker. Anything fairly easy you can tear apart, and anything challenging just go berserk and tear it apart. Works great for quite a while. Also the fact that you can eat all your enemies and enjoy it, it's satisfying somehow. Elven conjurers/wizards are good too, blasting everything to death, especially if you can find a way to increase your speed. Use Mephitic cloud on them ogres tho! Oh, and nice run Turtle. Cold vuln + Freezing Wraith = bad! Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: lamaros on March 10, 2009, 05:31:53 AM Ok here's a point I'm still confused on. What does glowing and runed mean in regard to items?
I've been ignoring all non glowing or runes things on the premise that all the good stuff is going to be enchanted in some way, and that glowing and runed are indications of this. But looking about I can't seem to find out if this is true or not. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on March 10, 2009, 05:46:23 AM I have found glowing ranks slightly below runed. Any runed weapons I find I usually test out to see if they are Vorpal (of crushing, speed, holy wrath, etc). Once (or if) I find one, then I start busting out scrolls to improve them (as you can't use them on artifacts). I only test the type I am specialized in usually, unless it is a good weapon type that I wouldnt mind starting to skill up.
Also, if you use a scroll that has you try something from your inventory, try it on your best piece of armor. I have found a lot of the time they are enchant armor scrolls. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Raging Turtle on March 10, 2009, 06:05:41 AM Recharge wand also asks you to target something in your inventory.
Some other tips that might or might not be known: enchant armor on a piece of dragon skin turns it into the appropriate dragon armor, and using unidentified enchanted weapons in combat will eventually identify the weapon; the higher your weapon skill, the higher chance of identitying. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on March 10, 2009, 03:19:01 PM Glowing and Runed are the low tier of magic items, the good stuff will be brightly glowing, twisted, smoking, humming, or some other interesting adjective. Still worth testing the glowing stuff if it is something you are specced in tho.
Non glowing/runed can still have +'s, probably an indicator of quality or somesuch. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: lamaros on March 11, 2009, 09:39:34 PM Gahhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Also, Caputal F for finding items, then you can just push a letter and go right to them. Can also search for "shop" or even "trap" tho I don't know why you'd want to. Gahhhhhhhhhhhhh..... I always run into something that can mow down my minions sooner or later. I was trying hard to do a summoner for quite a while and having all kinds of problems. I eventually arrived at the conclusion that I needed to be a conjurer first and then work on summons later. Problem with that approach is that you never get around to working on summons tho... Also, Caputal F for finding items, then you can just push a letter and go right to them. Can also search for "shop" or even "trap" tho I don't know why you'd want to. Yes, I do. Just a lot of time wasted with troublesome monsters (lots of annoying things that are hard to kill with just short blades and poison magic - and stalkers have low armor generally. In my recent game I've changed to running about with plate on most of the time, which works better). And Vampires level slowly. :) Played another Vamp char. Did better. Got 3 hit through plate armor (with artifact sword at 19AC or so) in Goblin mines. Cleared the first three levels (pretty much 1-hiting half the mobs) and then got 3 hit by a respawn on the second level or something... would hit for more than my potions healed, and couldn't outrun it. When I went to use the tele scroll I died... Best thing about Vamps is you never run out of healing poitions. The blood potions you make at level 6 give health and lower hunger, so you've pretty much always got something to slurp down. At one stage in the goblin mines I had about 20 of them. And 5 ##### rating with my God (who didn't save me when I needed him!). The spellcasting thing isn't that great with a Vampire though. You don't have to worry about hunger (run about undead and then just drink some blood and rest if you need to heal) but you just level skills too slowly. Stealth and Stabbing is pretty useless too (unless stabbing works with invis, which might make it slightly better). Might run make a chaos or death knight for the next one and give up on the magic thing. Nice resists, nice AC/Evade, good equipment. Hell of a run.
I've gotta get playing this again, been so damn busy with stuff, still have my high elf sitting at the bottom of the vault. Yeah 273 berserked, and with an Amulet of resist slowing you never go into SLOW mode (AKA dead mode) after zerking. The Iron City of Dis is Nasty, they just keep nuking you over and over and draining half your life. I think my Teleportitis killed me actually, ported me to a bad spot. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Moaner on April 08, 2009, 06:13:36 AM Awesome run man! You have motivated me to fire this back up when I get home from work. I'm going to spend the day pondering between a Spriggan assasin and a Dwarf fighter.
Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on April 08, 2009, 09:57:27 AM I recommend if you go melee, go berserker. Rage at 'almost' any time, the regen ability, and calling in ogres and shit to fight with you are awesome abilities! If you stumble upon a resist slowing amulet, you will become insane...wading through monsters. Just make sure on corpses you don't want to eat, hit "p" for pray then chop the corpse, it sacrifices to your god.
Good hunting and may you never reach the tomb and not have a sustain abilities necklace :) Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Moaner on April 08, 2009, 10:41:14 AM I haven't played a berserker since my first couple runs. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on April 09, 2009, 01:08:34 PM I haven't played a berserker since my first couple runs. That's actually a great suggestion. Now that I know the game better a Troll Berserker should be pretty bad ass. I forsee a long evening of DCSS! I liked minotaur because it gives very solid stats, and the only real drawback I saw was lack of wearing helmets (but you can wear caps). Troll resists armor, and later on you are going to want all the artifacts you can get :) Kobold was great because you could eat all the fucking time. The thing about berserker is you need to be in a safe around when you come out of rage, or its your ass (or get resist slowing amulet). Hill Orc zerker is good....zerkers are just good :) Good hunting! Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Raging Turtle on April 09, 2009, 01:49:20 PM Found the +12/+16 longsword of Plutonium today - I could kill ANYTHING in a few swings.
Of course, it was cursed, and I couldn't find a remove curse scroll for 3 levels, and enchant scrolls didn't help because it was an artifact. And it gives off mutagenic energy. Plutonium and all. No amulet of resist mutation, either. I had about 20 mutations by the time I was able to unequip the damn thing, most of them bad :why_so_serious: I didn't last long with a lightning fast metabolism, severe teleportitis, and a rapidly deteriorating body :ye_gods: Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Moaner on April 10, 2009, 09:17:18 AM I did end up rolling a Troll Berserker, but I will try a Mino next. I've read the wiki but I'm still confused as to when I should trade my claws for a weapon. For instance, Trog gifted me this today.
(https://dl-web.getdropbox.com/get/Photos/axeoftheendsmall.JPG?w=f799e018) I equiped it mainly because the effects are bad ass, but would I be better off using my claws? Here is a partial character dump. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on April 13, 2009, 09:33:21 AM Wow, that War Axe is INSANE. +5 evasion and it has speed enchanted into it...with lightning resist.
Starting using it now, your unarmed combat still comes in handy, for headbutts and other strikes. Your fast regening body doubled with Using that Trog regen ability will be awesome. EDIT: No shield eh? Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Moaner on April 14, 2009, 07:39:47 PM I'm loving this berserker. Fucked up and left my sustenance ring on. Food was a problem as I was made into a herbivore by mutations. GRR. Teleportitis killed me as well, cause I had to wear a amulet of stasis to not get ported to my death. End of this game is a bitch. Fuck. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on April 04, 2011, 07:39:47 PM Started playing this again. Still going the High Elf Wizard route. Swiss army approach ftw.
I dislike Ice Dragons. That is all. No it isn't. I hit you, you bastard, with a flaming sword +6/+6, when you were "almost dead". You were supposed to die, not me! Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on April 19, 2011, 12:44:22 PM My last run, got up to Level 12, down to D11, Lair3 and died on Orc 4. Never found a book. Never found a decent weapon. Never found any decent armor I could use (amazing scale mail, but couldn't use it) Was killing everything with Mephitic cloud and a billion magic Darts. 5 Warrior and 1 Warlord was waiting on Orc 4.
This run I already found a book STORE! Score!!! Orc mines were full of cash too, got almost 1k. No super great equipment yet though, and almost no scrolls. I only found 2 remove cuirse and already had to burn one (down to D8). It's very worrying. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on April 23, 2011, 08:59:52 AM Somebody start playing this with me.
Current run is going well, good chance of becoming epic. Books out the ass. I have a line of spells waiting for spell levels. Next up is Freezing Cloud, then probably Fireball, or maybe Haste or Invis, or teleport self, or Abjuration... I need more spell levels. Lots of spell levels. Orb of Destruction is amazing and very fun. Coat the dungeon walls with the blood and chunks of your enemies. Can almost one-shot a hill giant. Still way short on Jewelry, but only cleared Lair and Orc so far. Still haven't found the Hive, but it will be cake as soon as I do. No Shoals this game, snake and swamp which shouldn't be too bad. I'll do them after Hive and Elf. Hope I find some decent artifacts soon. Still only 1 shop, but it was Books after all, so I guess I can't complain. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on April 28, 2011, 12:17:55 PM I shall continue talking to myself.
I died. I'm sure that's no surprise to anyone. Some named guardian serpent slept me and beat me to death in my dreams. The swamp sure is harder than it used to be. The next decent game was not kind in items. I had ac7 in Lair3 and took a few too many slight risks. I had an amulet of Gourmand too. sigh. This game is not being kind in items either. I have 10ac but no spellbooks yet and Sif hasn't been kind enough to give me one, but I'm almost there... so what do I have to deal with? I go into lair, and there's a 7hydra waiting on l1. I have magic dart and wands of frost/flame, I can't deal with that... so I go to Orc, and there's a Sorcerer on level 1 Argh. I can't deal with that either, so I'm stuck confusing cyclops and spamming magic dart in the dungeon... I doubt I'll last much longer, but maybe I'll get a book from Sif, and maybe it won't be the book of annihilations or stalking or transmuting or some other useless crap... Maybe also pigs will fly out of my ass and kill all the monsters for me... Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Slayerik on April 28, 2011, 12:33:24 PM I died down in the last room. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on April 28, 2011, 01:14:38 PM What was it that you got there with? Some form of Berserker IIRC?
The game is harder now too, significantly so. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: ezrast on April 28, 2011, 03:29:30 PM I'm trying to come up with a character worth posting about, but I suck and usually die to something mundane at level 8. Maybe I need to stop obsessively playing kobolds.
Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on April 28, 2011, 05:01:19 PM Heh. Hope that's no crime. I'm obsessively playing High Elf Wizards. Every now and then I'll do a something of Xom for fun.
Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: ezrast on April 28, 2011, 07:46:46 PM Arrgh.
So, my favorite thing to play is KoTm. I don't play it like a proper transmuter; I actually skip all the form-changing spells (except for spider form, which I use as a poor man's swiftness) and just abuse evaporation to blow away everything in the early game. By mid game, most things dangerous enough to use a potion on are resistant to either magic effects or poison, either of which pretty much renders evaporation useless. So it's basically up to my god to allow me to deal with undead, jellies, etc. I'm still figuring out what works best - Kiku is great but still leaves me no recourse against demons; Okawaru and Vehumet take a long time to give me anything good; I haven't tried the more utility-based gods like Chei and Fedhas but I doubt they'll provide the punch I need. Of course, sometimes a KoTm comes together just right and actually manages to cover all the bases. These are the memorable ones. They don't die due to monsters; they can handle pretty much anything the dungeon throws at them. No, these characters die to the most latent, aggravating weakness the combo has: its low carrying capacity. See, as a Tm you're constantly distilling corpses into potions; you don't think of potions as being very heavy but they add up, 4 aum at a time. I don't like to have less than a dozen of each of the common ones (poison, confusion) so I'm constantly trying to decide what I can stand dropping to avoid being encumbered. Get an armor upgrade? Looks like I'll have to leave my spare weapon behind. Find a wand of teleport? This spellbook can stay on the floor til I need it next. Of course, sometimes I fuck it up. This latest one made it to level 11 before I accidentally left myself encumbered while diving through two or three levels of hostile monsters looking for a good choke point. And encumbered is not a good thing to be when you're level 11 and running away from a large slime creature. Ah well. Experienced the labyrinth for the first time, so at least I learned how that works. I'm considering just putting every point into str on my next character but a short blade/caster hybrid putting points into strength is just a little too dissonant for me. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on April 28, 2011, 09:05:13 PM Hell, I don't know. I like Freezing Cloud. That kills things good. Also Poison Cloud.
But I guess if you were going that route you wouldn't be a Kobold, and you wouldn't be a Transmuter. Is Dragon Form any good? Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: ezrast on April 28, 2011, 10:27:16 PM I'll see if I can get Vehumet to give me some ice stuff sometime, this was my first decent game worshipping him.
Never gotten high enough for Dragon Form. Like I said, I suck. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 06, 2011, 09:53:49 AM Dragon form is L8 apparently, I've never cast a L8 spell either.
I'm doing ok this game, I've been focusing lots of xp on fighting and have over 100hp at lvl18 with a high elf. Cleared out snake with ease with freezing cloud. Lots and lots of freezing cloud. Just cleared Elf the same way, but man can that place get hairy. Damn sorcerers and demonologists summoning fiends and executioners really make life interesting, but they all died eventually, even the damn sorcerer wearing armor of cold/poison/elec resist. He was a pain, I had to run from him twice before I finally got him to sit on a conjured flame and roast to death. Control Teleport with blink is amazing. That is all. I'm thinking Vaults next maybe, or I might try Shoals, I've never been there before. Here's hoping that death isn't right around the corner. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 10, 2011, 09:16:33 PM Vaults are now clear. Waiting for me at V8 was 24 vault guards, 5 stone giants, 2 storm dragons, a bone dragon, a half a dozen shapeshifters, a high orc priest who only raised dead once and smited me once, thank god. Various yakaurs and random trolls were there too, all that within a dozen turns of my descending the stairs. It was interesting. Fought my first lich in one of the vaults too, those things love to spam Balrug and other super nasties. I machine gunned him down and ran like hell.
Got a few spellbooks for my trouble, but no randarts that were amazing enough to use. Boots of levitaition which levitate forever, very nice but not extremely helpful. I think that means I do Shoals next though, levitation forever there will probably be extra special nice. Wish I could do Swamp, but don't have that option. Maybe could do Tomb instead but not sure I have access to dispel undead yet... Here's hoping that death is not right around the corner... Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 10, 2011, 11:31:52 PM Ok, so there was really nothing to fear in the Shoals. Everything died to Poison Cloud, even the Kraken. Got some halfway decent C++ gloves and my third rune, some other random junk too.
Hrm... wonder what I do now? Slime terrifies me, and I'm not too set up for fighting legions of undead...they don't care so much about freezing and poison cloud... Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 11, 2011, 07:47:09 AM (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/91035/crawl-frosty.jpg)
So I'm wandering through the dungeon and come across a structure, a clear glass cage full of death yaks. I naturally give them a frozen surprise and they all die. Then I teleport inside and inside the vaults is a meat freezer with automatic frozen cloud generation! There must be a twisted Micky D's down here somewhere... Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 17, 2011, 08:15:52 PM The Slime Pits suck. I'm not going there until I have decent artefacts and can afford to cast Dig 9 bajillion times to keep the walls from beating the crap outta me. Crypt is much more doable, liches and all.
Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 18, 2011, 08:41:45 AM Fell through a shaft down to Crypt5. Took forever to find the stairs, waded through tons of hell knights, bone dragons and other fun. Finally did find the stairs and then tackled the end vault. Killed 1 lich, lured away the other and the ancient lich. What was in the vault that they were guarding? A somewhat decent quarterstaff, 2 scrolls, some gold and some barely magical junk. sigh. You'd think an ancient lich would have more to show for all his years.
Guess I'll work on the regular dungeon for a while, really not looking forward to doing the slime pits. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 18, 2011, 10:31:46 PM Sif was nice enough to gift me a book with Orb of Destruction in it, so now I'm a death machine again.
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/91035/Screen0010.JPG) (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/91035/Screen0011.JPG) and down on level 22 of the dungeon what do I find but a bookstore with Book of Annihilations inside, now I don't have to worry about where to get that. Figured that while I was clearing the basic dungeon it was a good time to switch gods, went with Kiku for the torment resistance and corpse granting abilities. Sif's wrath is somewhat of a pain. I've already gotten 4 bad mutations from her forced miscasts and she paralyzed me in the middle of a largish fight. Fortunately I had already freezing clouded everything, but it still was not good. I have the feeling I've got a long way to go with it too, maybe I'll burn some permanent food and wait it out for a while. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 24, 2011, 10:12:35 AM Slime pits are clear down to level 5, but Sif Muna still hasn't made peace with me, and the miscasts and punishments are plenty bad enough to get me killed if they happen while fighting the Royal Jelly.
Base dungeon is completely clear. Lots of portals to Zot on the bottom level. First time I've done that. Only branches left are Slime, Crypt, Hell, Pan and the Abyss. Everything else is picked clean. Burned all my scrolls of acquirement looking for a decent weapon. I got a -2-1 triple sword of flaming Ev+3, a sling of frost ev+3 rpois and a TRIDENT OF REACHING! sigh. My best randart weapon is the Singing Sword (+7 +7). No art boots or helmet or shield. My armor is a leather +4 +lev. Armor is a problem for me. Sif Muna needs to stop being mad at me. It really sucks. I only have 1 cure mut potion left, had to burn my other one when I got to moderately glowing from sif's miscasts and a bunch of bad mutations got through my resist mutation pendant. I've got 3 piety stars with Kiku but they'll be gone if I have to wait out the rest of Sif's wrath, and the only other reasonably safe place to go is Crypt and Kiku doesn't give piety for killing undead. Things are sub optimal. Maybe I should go wander in the abyss. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: ezrast on May 24, 2011, 04:07:51 PM Currently working on a KoTr that's had an excellent start. Was going to go Kiku and spellcasting heavy, but I found a dagger of speed on D:2 and a corrupted Temple on D:4 full of altars to Lugonu (I guess this is a new thing in 0.8, which I just upgraded to recently). I've never taken a Lugonu character far, so I decided to go that route and see where it took me.
The dungeon made up for the early weapon and temple by throwing all sorts of uniques, orc bands, and demons at me at inconvenient times - I think I had to leave three consecutive levels to be cleared later - but I actually managed to survive it all to the first couple branches. Lair was full of hard-to-kill snails and poisonous snakes and frogs, so I decided to go orc until I could get the money to buy some better gear. Orc, of course, had Kirke waiting for me, so I just had to leave and scrounge up the gold from the main dungeon. Now I have an rPois cloak, daggers of speed and venom, and sabers of distortion (thanks, Lucy! And thank you, amulet of faith!) and holy wrath. Only real mishap so far has been -1 dex thanks to magical radiation from a distortion unwield. And I just found a +4 robe of Night {+Inv MR sInv Stlth++} in Lair:5. So I guess I might be ready to try Snake. I say "guess" and "might" because I've never done snake. So I will probably die in the first 50 turns. Here goes. edit: Never mind. Gave up on Snake after some unique roughed me up a bit too much, went on with the main dungeon until I underestimated a dragon and his friends. Forgot that spider form removed my rF++. Got burned to death waiting for a teleport to kick in. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 24, 2011, 09:00:20 PM Sorry to hear that man. Nice robe tho.
Snake really isn't that bad if you can reliably kill trolls and have poison resist. Must have poison resist tho. It's easy to line up the nagas in there so bolt spells/wands do wonders. I'm still soldiering on, decided to try and clear the last level of Slime. (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/91035/Screen0001.JPG) Eat pink bowling balls you gelatinous bastard! Last level of slime hasn't been so bad. Acid blobs are a bit scary but I can handle them. Azure jellies aren't bad with 3 levels of cold resist, and everything else is just fodder. Now that I've got the Royal Jelly almost dead he runs whenever he sees me, just have to clean up the rest of the stuff and get one more whack on him and the treasure is all mine!!! Hope there's at least something decent in there... Ed: Finished the level off... (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/91035/Screen0002.JPG) Only thing useful was an amulet of controlled flight, see invis which replaced my amulet of controlled flight... whee. Went and cleared the vestibule of Hell. Geryon was a decent challenge. I really don't want to play around in Hell too much more though, so I guess I go to Xot and do the first few levels now... Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 25, 2011, 06:44:18 AM First 2 levels of Zot are clear. Storm dragons are easy for me now and there's nothing else there really that's much of a challenge. Found a somewhat decent ringmail randart (+2, ev+6, Str+3). I'd use it except it hurts my castings slightly and I'm working towards firestorm. Without any items of wizardry I can cast it at (bad). Progress!
Sif Muna is still mad at me. Today she damaged my brain. Ed: Had to chop off a bunch of history because apparently there is a post limit size. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 25, 2011, 09:50:46 PM Level 3 of Zot is mostly clear. Orbs of fire really suck. I've never been happier that my Resist Mutation necklace also has RF++. Electric golems also pretty much suck. Everything eats pink bowling balls until it dies, then I fill up the magic meter with dragon bits or just my own body and cast regen. I love regen.
I fought 2 storm dragons and an ice dragon at the same time and it was much easier than one stinking orb of fire. Those things are a menace, but so far only mutated me once with a fast metabolism. At least there are lots of dragons to eat around there. Sif is still mad at me, still causing the occasional miscast. I really hope that ends soon, it could be very bad. I've got 5 piety stars with Kiku now, soon I will get necromutation and won't have to worry about mutating anymore. I'd much rather rely on my 30 healing potions than my 1 cure mutation. I wish there was someplace safer I could go to gain piety, maybe I'll take a look at Dis or Gehenna. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 26, 2011, 08:56:06 AM Stepped on a Zot trap while clearing the Hell vestibule and got tossed into the Abyss. Wandered around in there for a while, picked up a frail mutation and a bit of rotting. Slaughtered a lot of demons and whatnot, except for the Ancient Lich and the Pit Fiend. I left them alone. Got my 5th piety star briefly but lost it again, need to gain it back so I can get the necro book with Necromutation in it. Running out of places to kill things, it's either Hell or Zot now, not even sure which is better. Probably will go to Genehha and see how bad it is. Need to get Necromutation running so I can stop worrying about bad mutations.
E2a: (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/91035/Screen0003.JPG) Oh Hell Yes! This is holding a staff of Wizardry, but almost there! And hunger is only a Strawberry! I'll be blowing shit up for serious! Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 28, 2011, 09:40:34 AM Zot 3 is clear. Cocytus is clear and the icy rune is mine. Antaeus took plenty of firestorms to take down. I now have the Necronomicon but must work on my transmutation as I can only cast Necromutation at bad. Dumping all xp from Zot4 into Transmutation and hopefully I can get my success to fair.
I am now at the point where I either go for the orb, go to Gehenna, or go to Pan. The orb actually seems like it might be the best option now even though I don't quite feel ready... but I probably never will. Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: grebo on May 28, 2011, 07:46:26 PM I've been working on the orb chamber/all the live long day... it's seriously slow going. Go in, maybe I'll see some draconians and firestorm their asses, or maybe I'll see an orb of fire or an electric golem or an ancient lich and have to retreat a bit and deal with it, then regen mana, maybe request corpses from kiku and animate them after I chop up some for mana food. Zombies come in handy for distracting things while I get set up to blast everything, also for getting in the way of orbs from ancient liches. Also butterflies.
Necromutation is very nice. Having complete Fire/Cold/Neg resists comes in very handy. Had a seriously close call involving an electric golem spawning outside the orb vault. I firestormed it twice hoping it would die, it didn't, I was all out of mana and had no good options at all for hurting it. It kept throwing lightning, whittling me down until luckily it blinked away and I was able to regen enough for one more firestorm. Serious nailbiter that was. Hope I don't die. Found these "cherry picked bad ideas" (https://sites.google.com/site/cherrypickedbadideas/) on the main Crawl site. Amazing hilarity after much crawling. Quote CDO Sigmund gets his own Twitter feed for each kill. A unique boring beetle called Ringo. Spriggans can wear gloves as body armor. and many other genius ones Title: Re: DCSS: The Adventures of Happy Hedonist, or The Spriggans Crusade Post by: Xilren's Twin on December 27, 2012, 03:14:47 AM Rise from your temporary grave! Temporary b/c i keep dying over and over but it's a fun time waster when needed on a low end computer.
General pattern is to either die on levels 1 or 2, or make it to level 10ish and die in the orc mines. Last run was my best so far but still got smoked by a named lich in the shoals (my first time there). Made it to level 14 as a mino zerker, had several artifacts and my +8 Plate Mail. I am not looking forward to meeting this ghost. Still dont know how to get a caster high enough to cast the good stuff. I seriously doubt i will ever "win" at this game. Think I posted about it in PC gaming....

Turned out to be a +13, +13 sword of Pain that prevents casting. Who needs casting with a +13 FUCKIN SWORD WOOOOO. Cleared slime to level up long sword for the Zot run. GG fuckers.

I could have done Zot, but I had never done the hells before. They sucked but I finished 3 of them. The fourth had too many shadow fiends, which did not mesh well with my constant necromutation. Then I had never seen Pan before, it's really not bad. Pan lords can be a bit tricky but are weaker than the bosses of Hell IMO. Then I had never seen a Ziggurat before so had to try that. I was chewing through it no problem dropping everything with Tornado in 1 or 2 casts, then got a bit cocky and tried to plow through a herd of Mummies. Was doing fine, then 2 death curses hit my strength and that was it. Lying on the floor twitching while a giant pile of stuff tried to beat on me.
