Title: Urban Dead - Borehamwood
Post by: UnSub on October 28, 2008, 04:53:31 AM
Borehamwood (http://www.urbandead.com/signup.cgi?city=3)

It's got a perma death ruleset... for humans. Zombies can always get back up.

Open for 4 weeks, then closed to descend into whatever madness comes its way.

Anyone else interested?

My firefighter chopped down one zombie and then found a bar to hide in. If I'm going to die horribly, I might as well do it drunk.

Union Subion is holed up in a hospital with about 30 other characters.

The zombies are circling outside. Things could get messy as soon as they figure out how to open the door.

Teb Onas is in a police station in West Borehamwood, stocking up on Shotguns and Ammo. As soon as he gets himself some armor he will trek over to some hospital. Or if his fellow survivors begin to vanish.

It'd be easier if we didn't start 800 spaces from each other.  Coordinating consolidation is a PITA, especially when you don't get any coordinates for yourself.

you just work your way to a certain area of the map and go from there (like, uh...south!). But, yeah Im not too worried about it. I'll likely be dead in the morning.

I found the Big Brother House and made an entry in the Diary Room so I'm entered to win the DVDs. Once I did that, I got the hell out of there. That place will be a beacon for survivors and zombies alike. That means stay away!

Is it labelled "Big Brother House" on the map?  And is it in the city proper, or off in the woods somewhere?

Best course of action when you get your first 100xp? I was thinking either free running or construction.

The Big Brother House is in the area named Elstree Studios, which is within South Borehamwood.

The Diary Room is located at coordinates [551-85]

I'm holed up in a police station somewhere that some dude decided to randomly go all-out barricading. I even found a generator for it.

Unfortunately, picking scout seems to have been a shitty starter choice, since it's damn near fucking impossible to get XP. Being unable to hit stuff just sucks.

It would also help if there was a single zombie anywhere in the surrounding 10-block radius.

Go far enough SW of Borehamwood and you get to an all-girls private school in a place called "Bushey".  Bet it's not in the game though.

slow game for me guess cuz I started as medic can't swing my fireaxe worth a darn hitting a zombie, afraid to use my first aid kits, did 3 searches of a area today found 1 shotgun shell. :P Saw someone say do more than one search of an area I found my shell on 3rd try.

Just find a lit hospital to get more FAK's. Light helps a lot. I didn't realize generators ran out of fuel, so I had to trek to a gas station and search out some fuel cans which weigh a ton.

I went to the diary room to register for the contest last night.  If you're alive, it's a good time to go - tons of living players, VSB barricades, etc.  I thought about staying, but I figure organized zombie groups are going to get in and start picking people off slowly...  I'm headed elsewehre. :)

The additional mechanic of "there is a special place you want to go" did make things a little more interesting though.  Now it's back to being like Monroeville (which isn't bad). :)

Holy shit I miss a lot as a fireman with an axe...like I'm batting less than .100  - Still haven't hit 100 xp yet.

What are the key things to pick up early? I got first aid kits, some pistol clips and shotgun/shells, and a few books

Urban Dead feels like it uses the same random number generator that DAoC used:  Good old Streaky.  With 40% to hit with my axe,  I'll miss 10 times in a row and then connect for 6 straight shots.

If you plan to get construction to build barricades, I suggest getting a toolkit while it's still relatively easy.  You'll find one much faster in a nice, brightly lit factory than in an unlit, ruined one.  Other than that, I like getting a fire axe - no ammo use is nice when attacking. :)

The zombies have busted into my hiding place!  Luckily there's a couple dozen survivors there healing and killing the zeds.  Holed up in a police station now,  and might be time to get me a shotgun....

Generally it's buff your attack skills, then construction, then free running (or free running then construction).

Reading the books gives you a small chance of getting some xp, so use it at the end of turns or if you get locked in a building due to the barricades.

heh color me stupid....created a zombie char straight off log in play it....come back day later forgot password did not tie it to email account. *DOH!*

still haven't hit 100exp either. Person above said they found a boook I found one to carried it for two days then just chucked it no sure what it would/can do.

heh, I'm swinging 10% hit rate with my fireaxe I found first day I logged in. Got a baseball bat to same hit % less damage.

Must confess I couldn't log into my first character since I must have typoed the password when signing up while not adding an e-mail. Although I made a second character with this brand new knowledge and have been liking it so far even though getting horribly painfully viciously slaughtered in Monroeville. Even though it's easier right now I suspect it will change soon as many zombies are gaining experience and leveling up fast. They only have to attack barricades to start off and can start off with Death Grip. So far the highlights have been killing a zombie hiding in a building with my last shotgun shell and spraypainting "This is Bat Country!" on a few buildings. Today I finally found a pistol so I can unload all these clips into the first walking corpse I find tomorrow.

Some things I've learned which I think other survivors should remember though. One is that Borehamwood is in England and they don't have gunstores in malls there. Also, if you find an item and you know you don't want to get it again, uncheck it in your settings. I don't really believe it costs AP to drop items, but it's still a good idea. I also agree that if you don't have weapon skills yet, like I don't, then finding a melee weapon with high hit chance can probably be better. I have a knife and it's pretty nice to shank deadies with it, not having to reload. The Big Brother House is a zombie magnet at the moment, although the barricades are high, but so many zombies outside, so I'd just avoid that place. And for the love of all that is still alive don't hide in random buildings!

If there's a survivor group out there that can use me, my name in BHW is F13 Gets (http://www.urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=1393669). I have an extra radio I can't find a use for.

I'm 'The Flapper,' by the way.

Don't die? I actually got stuck in this station because I wandered far from my safehouse and ran out of AP hacking at a Zed.

Post by: climbjtree on November 09, 2008, 10:00:01 AM
After coming into this station I found two shotguns, a flare gun, and a bunch of shotgun ammo. Now if only I had better than 2.5% chance to hit.

Post by: Slayerik on November 12, 2008, 08:15:34 AM
I'm a zombie slayer, baby.

Have had three upgrades, went for Melee Prof, Firearms prof, and free running. I basically just hole up with a buncha survivors...trek out, and axe murder the fuck out of Zeds for like 40 AP a day. The last one I calculated I had one chance left before I had to run the 4 moves back to the safety in numbers...he had 4 HP left so the axe wouldn't do the trick. Whipped out the pistol and popped him in his dome.  You get a nice bonus for finishing zeds, like 15 xp.

Title: Re: Urban Dead - Borehamwood
Post by: NiX on November 12, 2008, 11:13:19 AM
That's been my routine also. Pop out, look for a zed to hack at, pop back in.

Post by: Raging Turtle on November 12, 2008, 12:55:20 PM
Started playing this a few days ago and am enjoying it quite a bit.  It fits in nicely with the social life as well - no chance of wasting hours with only 48 AP a day  :uhrr:

Bazilisk the zombie has been killed a few times and is still level one, but hopefully I'll crack 100xp tomorrow.  Lurching Gait here I come!

John Carthage, military private, is also pretty close to level 2, and is definitely more fun than my unkillable zed.  Had a few close calls, but I've wandered into a police station in Central B., where every other building is lit up.  My main problem is finding zombies to gain xp off of.

Seriously, a map that switches to permadeath for zombies (along with no revives) after a few weeks would be awesome.  I have no idea why the creator hasn't made one.

Title: Re: Urban Dead - Borehamwood

Well....  I've killed 5 or 6 zombies now, and almost level 9.  Holing up in a police station with a bunch of hospitals nearby.  Can't wait for headshot to put zombies down a weee bit longer!

It's funny,  I've search the police station a bunch of times and still haven't found a fucking shotgun.  I NEED a boomstick.

Yeah, if you find somewhere with a television, you can watch it and see the only channel still broadcasting is the live feed from the diary room in the big brother house.  I looked earlier this morning - 29 zombies and some dead bodies.   No longer a safe place for the living to go.

I'm in NE Borehamwood - if there is a place people are gathered, send me a PM and I'll make my way there.

There's a supermarket in N Borehamwood that would seem to be a great place to try to defend (not too far from a police station) - anyone in that area who could let me know if it is safe or z-infested?

I should be okay. PM me the name of the spot we were in though? I've been told that SW B-wood is 22 blocks wide, so hopefully South and SE B-wood are too. I should be able to make it in a day or two depending on how safe I play it.

I started one character as a zombie.  I think I'm a level 6 or 7 now.  Anyways, this morning I see civilian Big Ernie killed me and dumped my body outside in the street.  I suppose he was low on AP/No Construction because he only closed the doors behind him.  It felt good to stagger to my feet, fumble open the door, eat him, then close the door and lock him inside the building until a wandering zombie lets him out.  :why_so_serious:

My apologies if anyone here is/was Big Ernie.

My zombie is still slow going (not many people dumb enough to stay out in the streets and they're too hard to hit in dark open buildings) but my military private is zooming after he cleared that second level hump.

And Craan, that's awesome.   :awesome_for_real:

I saw that when I logged in and filtered out the crap radio. We need gas, I used my last fuel can after it ran out. I can't seem to find a gas station. There used to be one near the hospital I was at, but not near here.

I'll try and get some gas on my next 40 ap cycle then. I saw three zombies in a group probably about 5 blocks south of us. Maybe more.

A group of zombies are attacking Hodson Bank (559,71) in South Borehamwood at the moment. It's likely they'll head my way soon since I'm just 9 blocks from there. I've asked one of the survivor groups to help out.

Is it me or is it harder to find items if there are a lot more people in the building with you?

Edit: Ugh. I hate it when I'm right. The zombies have busted through the barricades of Marcellin General Hospital (http://iwrecords.urbandead.info/11-19-08_1500hrs_PRIVATE/IN_561-67__9dd-aa8-537.html) and will take on the Freeth Gardens Garage next. This is just 5 blocks south of me. All I know is that they're general direction is the Borehamwood Shopping Center (NE Borehamwood iirc), but they're going to eat anyone on the way there.

My survival strategy thus far has been to hole up in an EHB unlit building next to a powered resource building.  When I see the lights go out in that building, I'll flee, but until then I figure that as long as there are lit buildings around me the zombies will be spending their time breaking into those.

This has been working for me. On the other hand, I've only ever seen two zombies in my neck of the woods and they seem to have wandered off.

This sucks, because now I can't even crawl towards Level 2 at 3-4 XP/day. Perhaps I'll just raid the library a bit.

Find a different neck of the woods.  The hunting in South Borehamwood (around the Big Brother House) is excellent.  Of course, I might be only a day away from getting overrun, but like I said, I'm hoping that the police station going dark will give me enough notice that I can escape.

My strat for now is strength in numbers. Find a nicely barricaded police station, join the 25 others there, and hope I'm not the guy targeted. I leave for about 40 AP, whack some zombies and level up, and with the last 10 I keep stockpiling ammo for the dark days ahead :)

You presume I can hit things. Ha, sayeth yon Random Number Generator. Ha.

I've been using my fists mostly, and occasionally the pistol and shotgun I've picked up, when I can accumulate enough ammo. Spending a day scavenging ammo for one hit really blows.

I need a decent melee weapon.

Fire Axe is great with the prof.

Spend like 50 AP searching a lit Police station, you'll score some shit.

My character died this morning, 20 minutes before I checked on him. If only I hadn't stopped for coffee...

NE Borehamwood, Potts Police Station has about 20 zombies pounding on it. I was stupid enough to listen to the HAY GUYZ, LETS STIC TOGETER when I should have been running away.

I was also thinking that the only way survivors could win would be if they went into a building, shut the doors and never barricaded them. If zombies can be left without the xp needed to open doors - and tearing down barricades is the easiest way of getting it early on, barring stupid survivors leaving themselves outside - then survivors are pretty safe.

Well for me to make a good plan for survival, I gotta know what high level zeds can do.

Can they smell me in buildings and shit? I didnt know they had huge roaming death squads already, so my plans just changed a bunch.

That's how I got my pistol and shotgun, I just can't hit the broad side of a fucking barn. Shotguns are also 1 AP to reload each shot, so efficiency = :ye_gods:

I've got my pistol up to 55%. I must say going as a fireman worked well, you can wrack up XP with that 30% swinging, 3 damage axe pretty quick. I still use it a lot, as I'm saving ammo for the dark days to come.

3 levels till headshot ... woot

Im in East if anyone wants to try to stick together. Might be good to have a base, and two sets of eyes in case you log in and some zed is feasting...

Hey Nix!

2 south, 7 west is a petrol station. I didn't grab any fuel because it took all my AP to find it. Also, didn't see any zeds.

You and I should run an op around the BB house to wrack up XP. Probably hole up beside a lit place like everyone else is. Let me know, we need more XP and fast.

Group of zombies, I'm talking 20-something, are now pounding on Clarkson Row PD (565, 57. Right on the northern edge of S and SE Borehamwood). Most survivors are sheep. I mean I know this is hardcore, but zeds are really tearing up the place. I managed to take down one and get another one to 20HP, but that's when the AP ran out. A pack will just eat everyone and stick around for biscuits and tea.

I think I have to get used to the idea soon that there will be no intact police stations soon and stabbing zombies will be the main option again. For survivability it's a good idea to keep an eye on where the zeds will hit next, for example the Borehamwood Party Crew (http://www.barhah.com/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=13121). Staying clear of likely targets is an excellent idea too.

And Hi right back at ya, Crafty! We can survive this!

Jack Slugman this time around. NW Borehamwood is very quiet... still I've managed level 6. Maybe I'll start drifting SE, see if I can get extra circleslashed zombie figures on my helmet.

I'm carrying 5 loaded pistols and 7 loaded shotguns.... really overkill, but powered buildings and few targets make it inevitable. :drill:

Head south.  You'll use that up right quick.

Or just wait  :awesome_for_real: the zeds are definitely pushing northward.

Yeah, if you're in East and near the shopping center, it's going to be grim (http://iwrecords.urbandead.info/11-21-08_1500hrs_PRIVATE/IN_571-58__36b-7bb-b3c.html).

Anyone need gas?  Oh, I mean 'petrol'.  I've spent two days watching a flood of zombies roll by from inside an extremely heavily barricaded petrol station around the SE corner of Central.  So now I slosh when I walk.

Oh, god, Surlyboi's tip about the zombies NE from where we are sure came in handy. So I gathered 50AP to finally head out to another hunt. There was a group of 6 zombies there that were attacking next to a factory. I managed to shoot down two while one of them started clawing me! When the second one was down I fled back to where I came from. It's pretty awesome how you can be chased by someone in a turn based game like this.

Hopped into a hospital with my last AP  :awesome_for_real:

Hey, I found Gets.  Let me know if you need a FAKing.  I'm Sidereal Nom.

There are 1 zed and 4 bodies hanging out outside Emelia General, but my 10% with a fire axe is making for tough going.  It's down to 43hp

Yeah, I noticed a familiar name once I got to open my eyes again. Thought there would be more humans here though.

Might be the same zed that followed me here, since there were none when I ran back. We should make a plan (go awei zed spiehs), though I'd like to stock up on ammo and maybe a few medkits in the meanwhile.

Shopping center looks screwed though. (http://iwrecords.urbandead.info/11-22-08_0000hrs_PRIVATE/IN_571-58__14d-53b-1fa.html)

Shopping center's utterly fucked. I was hoping you weren't one of the victims at the PD when I went back. Glad to see you're still alive.

I'm performing hit and run missions now. Never staying in one place more than a few hours. I've got a bunch of FAKs and my trusty axe. I do still waste 2APs hitting the zeds I fight with a newspaper and saying "Bad zombie!"

I am probably that zed  :awesome_for_real:

Not sure if I'm going to continue playing as a zombie, though.  I already started a zombie character with rigor mortis right off the bat and it never came close to a 'live' character.

Both my level 9 civs were eaten.  Thanks to Crafty for throwing me some heals.  My zed butterpaw is part of an enormous pack of zombies.  What do you call a group of zombies?  Murder?  School?  Gaggle?

Drop out of my hiding place with 50AP and a fire axe (25% to hit thanks to finally getting Level 2 and using it to buy Melee!) - find a zombie, whack it once - it's down to 11 HP! Oh joy, I might get my first real kill and whatever exp bonus that gives.

Whiff, whiff, whiff, whiff, whiff...

Run back to my safehouse with 1AP to spare. Zombie still has 7 HP. Fuck you, game. Fuck you.

Yes, it's just not fair. Earlier today zombies started breaking into where me and Viin are. There was one already inside when I got there actually, but a shotgun to the face took that care of, as I recall. Later two more broke in. I killed one and took the last one down to 2HP and ran out of AP. A minute before hopping off to work I checked back to finish the deadie off with maybe a good knifing with my accumulated 1AP, but Father Geoge had killed it 4 minutes ago. Argh! When I got back from work I discovered I can't access any other website, except Urban Dead. My ISP has been acting up because of the blizzard during the weekend and a few times I've had to use a mobile G3 connection.

The whole day in copy&pasta format:

So it's been an eventful day out here, the most eventful so far, so I guess it's a sign of things getting mighty real now. While still only having access to UB (and EVE, fortunately) I just kept refreshing to get a heads-up when the barricades had been weakened. And so it went from heavy to lightly barricaded and soon enough there was another zed inside, probably Raging Turtle. It had taken one survivor down to 5HP before I realized, so I quickly emptied my clips into him. 15HP. 3 bullets. Not good. Missed. Out of ammo and the thing only had 5HP left! Knife-knife-knife-knife-knife! Dead! Dumped him outside in fear it still had AP's left, closed the doors and barricaded a bit until passing out from exhaustion. jessica winter (http://www.urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=1414193) better be damn happy I saved her ass if you ask me. After opening my eyes, I never though I'd be happy to see PENIS-spam again...and again.... and again.... and again...

Though I think I've made my decision that's going to cost me my life now. It's only been good fortune that a clever zombie hasn't busted in and checked first which delicious delicacies have the highest level in the brain buffet. But I want to liiiiiiive!

Also, kudos for all your concern over my wellbeing  :-)

NB: While I was writing this:

A zombie brought down the last of the barricades. (9 minutes ago)
A zombie destroyed the generator. (8 minutes ago)
A zombie killed jessica winter. (8 minutes ago)

fuck....

lvl 13 and counting, walked in on 5 zeds in a lighted PD, headshotted them all, dumped em , broadcast, and put a light barricade up, with 4 AP to spare.

Doesn't get any better than that
