Title: E3 2009 going big again
Post by: Venkman on October 21, 2008, 08:41:36 AM
Wonder if it's too little too late:

It's still going to suck.

All I know is that PR and Marketing folks loved the old E3. Can it come back? If they convince enough of those folks sure.

The old model was scuttled when the new guy (Gallahger) started. As you'll recall, at the time the old E3 went away, nobody really was complaining. But in the years hence, between the followup show in July, the quadrupling of the annual membership fee for the industry group, and other shows picking up the slack (thus showing demand), things haven't been looking good for them.

Also, EforAll was officially announced as no more (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/10/27/efor-all-officially-dead-as-e3-morphs), about the same time they mentioned the LA convention center is the place for E3 (http://www.videogamer.com/news/27-10-2008-9759.html) for the next 2-3 years at least and that it'd be in the more-appropriate June.

As per the article:

Quote
While E3 2009 will likely come nowhere near the monstrous 70,000-person attendance the show reached at its peak, X-Play did say to expect the show to "explode into the tens of thousands."

Um, nowhere near 70k? That's it?

PAX did 58k this year.

Yes, but PAX is just fans whereas E3 is attended by industry luminaries! Where else can you rub shoulders with GameStop employees, guys who snuck in via the catering company and Kotaku editors?

PAX is open to everyone, and is newer. It probably did get some boost from the disillusionment with the "new E3" that everyone thought they wanted until they got it. But so did the other conventions.

Personally, I don't care about E3. I go for GDC, Casual Connect and AGC if the budget supports it. Maybe I'll hit PAX when it comes to Boston.

Leipzig hits 200k each year, not sure what will happen to it this year though with all the shenanigans.

Can we start talking about this again yet? Isn't this coming soon?

GDC is this month. If game companies push all their big news now, E3 can expect to be nothing but a flash in the pan in comparison to the rest.

So while F13 will not be there in any 'official' regard, who's going?

I might go just to see people I know, but I don't have a way to get in in any official capacity.

Oh well!

I will be there for one day and unlike GDC I won't have any responsibilities other than to hang out.

Is there where we can post for Beta Invites/Guest Passes?

(I'll take a Fallen Earth if they're available...)

Someone should be awesome and get me into E3 this year. Just saying.

I live in Los Angeles and I am unemployed. What better combination?
