Title: Equilibrium
Post by: Tebonas on October 19, 2008, 12:25:08 AM
Thinking about Fifth Element made me think about this other cool masterpiece.

Action sequence only lighted by muzzle flashes = love.

Much love for eXistenZ also.

eXistenZ, Equilibrium, and the first Matrix make a good triple feature.

Caught eXistenZ the other day for the first time and thought it was pretty good.

Yeah that was an awesome bit of film lighting, however it was, for me, pretty much the highlight of the film. The rest of it didn't really excite me. Very much a style over content film I thought.

I could do with watching it again actually.

"Equilibrium" is very much style over substance, but you can see Christian Bale bringing more to this title than it probably deserved.

Christian Bale makes me think of The Machinist. Fucking good, but nothing like Equilibrium.

And by nothing like Equilibrium, I mean it is a completely different genre and story. There is pretty much 0 commonality between the 2.

Equilibrium is low budget mindless crap.  Fortunately I tend to like low budget mindless crap.  I was a little disappointed that they got half way through and obviously thought "You know what - this dystopian "big brother" shit is pretty heavy going - let's just stick with the gun-kata!"  It started off with so much promise as being a semi-intelligent sci-fi movie and then devolved into a sub-par action film that had one or two very good sequences. Christian Bale almost single handedly redeems this film because he is cool as fuck. He makes it watchable. Taye Diggs doesn't. The two Seans (Bean and Pertwee) got their assistants to phone their performances in.

Good, mindless "style" movie. Sometimes thats all I'm looking for.

Really disappointed me how bad Ultraviolet was after seeing this.

eXistenZ, Equilibrium, and the first Matrix make a good triple feature.

Add Dark City to that.  One of my top fives movies ever.

To vaguely derail, "Dark City" has a collector's edition out. Recut to how the director wanted it.

I remember, prior to the release, selling it to myself as a mixture of The Matrix and Fahrenheit 451. While it dabbled with the ideas, it just wasn't where I hoped it be.

Still though, I liked to move.

Wow.  Did he remove the intro narration?  That movie is one of my top five and I think one of the very few things that could improve it would be that.

Yep.  No more narration, so within the framework of the movie, there's a lot more mystery as to just what's going on at first.  Overall, it's a lot of little details that add up to a more complete picture.  Everything from stuff like the visual effects for the powers being different early on because Murdoch's not proficient with them yet, to expanded scenes with the Visitors, or the hooker.  If you liked Dark City, definitely worth getting your hands on.

I saw this the other night (the directors cut) and it was fucking amazing, I can't believe I've never seen it.

That being said, it would have sucked with narration, I spent a good chunk of the movie going "WHAT THE FUCK!? Who the fuck are those guys? Did he just fucking move shit with his mind? Holy shit!" - and thats always enjoyable.

It wasn't so much narration but a blurb at the beginning of the movie that was basically the doctor's explanation of what the Visitors were.  So before we even see the city, you know there's aliens and all that.  That's the gist of it at least, it's been awhile.

That would have really ruined the first 20 or 30 minutes of the movie for me.  The mystery is really what made it great, but I'm a fan of mystery.  I had no idea they were aliens or in space until the actual explanation, I was thinking maybe it was some sort of Truman show type deal underground or somesuch.  Fortunately though, I saw the directors cut, and it was  :awesome_for_real:, it's going in the blockbuster blu-ray queue for another viewing asap.

Nah.  I saw it in theatres with the narration there and it still blew me away.  It is just one of those little things where a little change can go a long way in making Awesome become Even More Awesome.

This reminds me of when I went to film academy here in Norway, we used to watch these movies like motherfuckers. Also for strange and awesome movies, I also suggest Aronofsky stuff like Pi which is hardcore awesome.

Really disappointed me how bad Ultraviolet was after seeing this.

That was the first and only movie I have ever walked out of before the credits started.
