Saw a few episodes on Hulu but didn't care for it. Do some people find it funny?

Sunny is a funny fucking show. It's like Seinfeld with all sense of propriety and social grace removed.

It's eerily like my group of friends in college, only with that veneer of palatability required for television.  Also hilarious.

I started watching this on Hulu a week or so ago. The one where the gang starts going to abortion clinic rallies to hit on women was funny.

How in the holy hell is this not on the front page?

In my book, South Park and It's always Sunny are the two funniest shows on television right now. T-minus 30 minutes till lift off.

Post by: FatuousTwat on October 24, 2008, 12:56:59 AM
I've missed too much of it to start watching it now. I don't get any of the in-jokes.

Title: Re: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Post by: HaemishM on October 24, 2008, 10:03:33 AM
I don't think you really need to watch it to get the in-jokes. They really aren't in-jokes, because the characters are often doing weird things just in that episode. Not really much continuity to it.

Title: Re: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Post by: Yegolev on October 24, 2008, 12:55:26 PM
These recent few episodes are probably much funnier when you know the character histories, particularly of Rickety Cricket and The Waitress.  Nothing really vital, though.  Artemis, for example, doesn't have much of a history.

You can buy reasonably priced collections of the first 3 seasons of It's Always Sunny in stores now....

It was good to catch up on all the in jokes,  especially season I've only seen portions of Season 3 and most of Season 4.

The episode in Season 2 when Charlie's big plan to get the Waitress backfires and the show ends with a close up of Charlie crying?  Heartwrenching.

"Dayman! Slayer of the Nightman! AAAA AA AAA!"

Goddamn, that season finale was just so fucking funny and sad. Mac's cat eyes and the whole rape scene were just hysterical. I can't stop singing that song.

NECRO!

Starting back up this Thursday. Tivo is set. I'm stoked enough I haven't deleted the reruns my Tivo recorded this weekend, just to watch them all over again. The one where Dee and Dennis get addicted to crack so they can get on welfare is priceless.

Well, that episode was thoroughly mediocre.  Except for when the gang discovers the family in the house, and Dennis goes into what they won't do to them.

This new season has been much better now that they've gone back to the gang just being their funny selves rather than getting into incredibly wacky situations.  Its kinda sad but both the D.E.N.N.I.S and the M.A.C systems would be incredibly succesful.

I asked for season one of this for Christmas because I couldn't think of anything I hadn't already bought myself that I wanted so I asked for things which I might not like.  I asked for this based only on seeing this thread bumped and one animated gif in some other thread, I had never seen a single episode but received seasons one, two, four and a Christmas special.

Best gamble ever.  This has got to be the funniest show I have ever seen, something about it rips apart my flesh and hits my very soul.  I am ashamed that I have only now learned of how incredible this show is and yet pleased that I have over four seasons to burn through on my holidays and laugh myself stupid.

It took me awhile to get into this show, several episodes before I "got it" and just let their retardedness wash over me like a lukewarm sponge.

Then in the second season, it took awhile before I was able to be ok with the total disconnect of Frank from what his character used to be.

Good show though.

Frank?  I just remember Frank having a mid-life crisis and deciding be a bum/loser with the guys.  Not even as bad as Cricket going from priest to bum.

Dee went from mostly sane and well meaning in season one to as much of an insane asshole as the rest.

Title: Re: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Post by: Azazel on January 19, 2010, 02:23:34 PM
Frank went from their Father (even though he wasn't) to having absolutely no paternal feelings for either of the late twentysomethings that he'd apparently raised from birth, instead joining them as a sociopathic sex-obsessed "friend" on their own level. With none of the awkwardness you'd imagine would be natural from any of the three of them. Unless they were awkward for about one episode of transition.

Title: Re: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Post by: Yegolev on January 22, 2010, 06:42:24 AM
That transition was extreme but in the context of the show (and real life) I can buy it.  Hell, if I was suddenly single and my kid was grown, who knows what the fuck I'd end up doing.

Hmm.

Decent first episode that shakes up the status quo.  The gang seemed less insane and more cunning/selfish than last season, where they would do fucked up things for very little reason.

Edit:

The League has been growing on me.  I'd never seek it out as a standalone, but it's good enough that I stick around to watch it after Sunny.

Season 7 just started. It's featuring "fat mac".
Quote
“Rob McElhenney has intentionally gained 50 pounds for this season,” shared his co-star Charlie Day in an interview with Collider. “It’s been disgusting to watch him pursue this venture… We’re a little bit on the fence about it, just for his own personal health and safety, but it has definitely made Mac a lot funnier this season because he still thinks he has the body of an Adonis.”

Title: Re: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Yeah, that was funny, specially when he got Dennis to let go too.  "Dude you wanna hit some of this insulin?" "No, i just want some crack!" the sheer joy Dennis got from the prospect of starting doing crack again was perfect.

Interesting (http://www.thewrap.com/tv/article/fxs-always-sunny-model-low-costs-total-freedom-30990) article about FX's model for shows like Sunny, Archer, Wilfred and Louie.  Basically they are giving complete freedom to the creators at the cost of paying them very low.

Title: Re: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Post by: HaemishM on September 16, 2011, 11:01:20 AM
Well, it's certainly worked. I watch everyone of those shows except Louie (just couldn't get into it). The creators get paid for doing what they want and if it succeeds, they get paid better money than they would have at a network. 5 guys splitting $40 million over 3 years ($8 million per) is pretty good money. At 13 eps a season, that's over $200k an episode. That first $1 million that the four of them had to split would still go a long way for people whose day job was waiter. That sounds like win for everyone involved in the formula.

Amazing how much better the shows get when the networks stay out of the fucking way. I wish Dan Harmon had a similar deal with NBC- I get the feeling that the network interferes a lot.

Adam Carrolla is a blowhard to the extreme, but he has networks pegged- he never stops bitching about their interference in all parts of the process of getting a show on the air. It was funny hearing him go off about his failed pilot with Pam Adlon when she was on his podcast; she just laughed and laughed and agreed with everything. She gets to see the FX process on it with Louie, so it was probably doubly amusing/frustrating for her.

That might have been the best episode of Sunny in a long time.

- Pickle Party.
- The Old Dennis (the one who is completely shallow, but scarily competent) made a reappearance.
- The asshole characters realize that they might be going to far with the fake funeral.
- Charlie and Dennis arguing about putting a crucifix in the bar.

The League was also really, really good.

I heard a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth about whether they could really bring the funny for a 7th season. Dear god...just full belly laughs multiple times in every episode. I had to rewind and watch the scene of Charlie and Dennis reporting the 'rape' at the PD several times because I was laughing so hard I kept missing lines. The look on Dennis's face when Charlie pinned him as the rape victim. followed by Charlie's 'He really made soup of your insides'...ROFL

The detective?  He played a minor recurring character on The Shield as a weasally police detective named Billings.  A couple weeks ago, they had the dude from the Wire/Fringe on.

I really liked this last episode where they broke into the house.  It basically started out in the middle of the story when it had escalated to full-blown crazy, rather than start sane and escalate.

This season has built from a good start into a great one. Chardee McDee the Game, the ANTI-Social Network and the house invasion were all just goddamn brilliant. The family with the Southern accent being Asian just scored an ace on top of the cherry. I think they can manage a good 7 seasons of crazy out of this.

I really didn't like last season of Sunny, but this season has been a great return to form.  Some uneven or mediocre episodes, like the how Mac got fat episode, but even then there have been saving bits.  Dennis going completely insane about his appearance was great.

The League has been pretty good as well...  and somehow they've managed to score some pretty amazing guest stars this season for a tiny FX show.  Seth Rogan, Ray Liotta, Jeff Goldblum, and Sarah Silverman so far.  Goldblum was great as Ruxin's father.

The whole Babaman thing had me rolling a couple weeks ago, and I find Rafi to be either completely terrible or completely hilarious....  which I think is the point of the character.

Haven't seen it yet, but Guillermo del Toro played "Papa McPoyle".

The McPoyles under that creepy horrorish lighting/filming made it difficult to eat my dinner while watching the episode.

"If Charlie rules the world i will go down on myself"  At least Dennis is a man of his word.  BTW, it's real (http://www.techpocalypse.com/).

That episode was so fucked up but so goddamn funny. Dee turning into a Stepford wife was gold.

The gang desperately tries to win an award is possibly the funniest episode they've ever done.

I just watched the episode "Charlie Work" (the Birdman homage one).  Wow.

Yeah, it was fucking amazing. Other than the one cut at the end when the RV drives back up as Charlie's opening the door, every other cut was insanely smooth and seamless.

According to the wiki, the long shot is actual an homage to True Detective and Birdman wasn't out in theaters when the episode aired.

I don't think I believe that, because it had the jazzy drum soundtrack thing going in the background.  Which I do not recall being a thing in True Detective.  But it was definitely not just a Birdman homage; it had more of the feel of a heist movie given the theme of the episode.

Dennis is doing a McConaughey impression behind the bar to the health inspector.  The first time I watched the episode I didn't even notice the long shot though I remember loving the flow of the episode.  I wondered why Dennis was doing the 'alright alright alright'.

ARISE!

New season coming Sep. 25th! (https://vimeo.com/357936015/7258c878d1)

Somehow, this show has maintained a pretty consistent level of quality, while also jumping the shark, then humping the shark's dead corpse after they blew it up with dynamite.
