edit.  Struck out the original post.

So, Slayer got me into Angel Island (though not sure if he even joined).  I am having a blast - balanced community, classic feel and stable server.  If people are interested in how to join post in this thread; I will throw together a how to guide.

Right now I am focusing on crafting- I actually do not have a single combat character yet!

I had to go on vacation, but I plan on hopping on tonight hopefully.

I am working extremely hard on crafting - the plan is to be self sufficient on all areas.  If anyone decides to join and needs tools PM me; my tinkering is above 80 and I can make almost any tool in exceptional quality.  Same with Armor/Weapons.

If you want to help me out (I am avoiding making an adventuring character until my crafting guys are done) then get me ingots.  Lots and lots of ingots.  Blacksmithy is the biggest bitch to gain skill in so I tend to ALWAYS be short on iron ingots.

Looks like not many vendors are located in those prime spots like just outside of Trinsic and such.  Still loads of house spots available.  I have my peace warrior ready for action.  Gotta find me some decent armor as I can't find any vendors selling.

I resubbed to OSI yet again.  There are a shockingly great many newbs running around New Haven on Atlantic.  Both the genuinely new variety and the "I got azzraped 10 years ago and quit, wtf is going on?" born-again newbs.  I've been tinkering with my house, raising money not quite as fast as I spend it, and helping newbies.

I pay the mage newbs to mark runes for me since I don't have any character that can mark.  And the semi-developed newbs I have follow me around looting while I mass kill critters.  I split the gold with them for the convenience of not having to stop to pick it up myself.  Newbies are my loot script.

Hah I just did too. Like today. Like, an hour ago. And now I am patching!

I was going to surf free shards and see what's out there. After all these years, I still love this damn game; but I want to see what EA's done with it first. It's highly unlikely I'll stay past the trial, so after a couple weeks I'll migrate to whatever free shard is hip at the moment.

Wow. They did some interesting things to it, but...hotkeys don't work. I press "I" and nothing happens, unless my backpack is already open. "I" apparently only closes the backpack. I did manage to reassign Tab to combat mode. I want to make Esc close gumps like it used to, and like it does in not only every game in existence, but every software application for Windows and the Mac.

They don't tell you how to buy or sell items, but thankfully I saw another player go "vendor sell." And the spelling and grammar is atrocious, like 8 year olds wrote it.

It looks kinda nice though. I'm fairly interested in exploring further. Definitely not sticking around after the trial.

I think if you click something to target it, then click their health bar where it appears, you get a context menu with buy/sell/whatever.  They really do a terrible job documenting things.  Oh, if you can make the money in time, try to place a house and tinker with the customization.  It's very cool.

If you single left click NPC's it should put up a drop down menu type thing where you can select what you need or what the NPC can do (train, sell, etc...).  Making money is challenging, but I think its possible.  I think to open up Inventory its ALT+I.  UO doesn't have just I, unless you reassign it.

I just resubbed to LoTRO.  Too much grind with no reward broke me this run around.   :uhrr:

He's playing EA, and I assume the KR client.

Yeah. I've tried remapping the keys, to no avail. I also tried toggling between Legacy and KR modes.

Making money seems insanely easy, especially in the tutorial city. Tons of escorts, lots of sellable loot...wow. "Bring me a log and I will give you 10,000,000 gp and the best weapons in the WHOLE GAME!" I miss saving up for my first piece of armor. I have over 10,000 gp now and nothing to spend it on.

Gear is easy to get.  Gear that's worth anything, not so much.  Anything you're getting as a quest reward in newbtown is probably junk in the greater scheme of things, and 10k isn't that much money.  Start hitting up player vendors.  I don't know what shard you're on, but start from Umbra and ride up the road toward Luna, checking vendors along the way.  Luna itself is the capital of "ten million gold to be 2% more uber" shopping, but there are so many vendors crammed in there that someone is bound to have something for you.  The Yew moongate in Trammel tends to have a lot of shops in the vicinity too.

You want to save up for something, save up for a Soul Seeker.  They run about 200k depending on what sort of deal you find, and they're an awesome PVM weapon if you're a swordsmanship guy.  If you get a bunch of items in stupid colors, the quest that begins with "Emilio the Tortured Artist" just north of West Brit bank will give you some bleach that lets you turn them back to their default color.  The Heart of the Lion breastplate is gold, for example, but the bleach will turn it an ordinary iron grey.  Just be aware that the quest will require 10k gold, a way to get to Nu'jelm, and a little puzzle-solving.

EDIT:  Oh, and Despise is a good place to go once you're done with newbtown.  Everything in the old-school dungeons has a chance to drop pieces of 'virtue armor' and other artifacts unique to those dungeons.  Drop chance goes up the more you kill, and resets when you actually get a drop.

That's cool. I think when I get home I'm just going to dump these newb quests and head to the mainland. I mostly wanted to explore the "new newbie experience" and I think I've done that enough.  :awesome_for_real:

New client would have been WIN if they had added more ability to alter it.  I liked the zoom in/out function and shiny graphics, but preferred some of the old style gumps and whatnot.

I could swear there's a bunch of mods out for it, including legacy gumps.  I'll look around later.

I just resubbed to LoTRO.  Too much grind with no reward broke me this run around.   :uhrr:

What server you on LOTR Cheddar?  I'm still playing UO on Angel Island.  What server/game are you guys playing where you are talking about Luna and such?  Different UO shard?

I have a lifetime membership to LOTRO.

Brandywine.  I will be starting up this weekend or so - I need to move a character there.  Champion 4tw - ultimate power leveller guy.

Luna is on the production UO shards - its part of one of the expansions.  And gay.

Well it turns out I'm not the only one (http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=62488) who can't use hotkeys for backpack or paper doll. It's been a bug since launch and hasn't been fixed yet. Everything else about the UI seems easy to grasp; any differences are a matter of, say, "Oh I can't use my sword on a tree any more, ok." No big deal.

I miss the old music. I went to Trinsic and felt like I was playing Pirates of the Burning Sea again with this weird Mexican hat dance playing. Not a lot of people around, though every available space is taken for housing. Just as I remembered it.

FYI - they did a server wipe and made a ton of changes.  I am tooling around with this now that my Nile Online love affair is at an end.

Growl!  It looks like gathering materials while afk is still a no-no.  Ah well.

FYI - AI is dead.  The wtfman.com server (Divinity) seems to be the one people like currently.

edit.  After tinkering around with Divinity I can honestly say its pretty good.  Old school rules for the most part, though some stuff is updated.  If people are interested I can start a new thread with information on how to join the server.

Adam Ant has brought AI back from the dead.  I am tempted to tool around here while waiting on Az's ass (HA).

I was on last night.  Saw one other person the entire time.   :oh_i_see:

On the bright side, I got mining up to 40.x, without leaving the dubious protection of Britain.

Angel Island does not get nearly enough credit for being as innovative and cool as it is simply because it doesn't have a massive population.

All people want to hear when they're pitched a UO shard is the official era it's modeled after.

I've  strongly considered emailing Adam Ant to ask if I can rip him off in a few places. Dragon breeding? Awesome. Custom songs in UO? Very cool.

However, using his ideas wouldn't at all be fair. Not just because they're his, but because he deserves whatever population he has. Now, if only everyone in the UO scene refrained from blatantly ripping each other off...

If you can rip the whole game off from people deriving an income from it, why should anyone care about freeshards ripping one another off? I don't mind freeshards, I've played around on some, but seriously.

I loaded UO - did some tweaking (running Windows 7 x64 platform on laptop), logged in - got the infamous flickering.  I scoured the internets and tried every suggestion - no love.

Compatability, resolution changes, patching client to x patch, etc.  I cannot play with that damn flickering!  I am praying Az'd client doesn't do the same thing - I am jonesin' for some old skool UO.

This, more or less.

If your conscience demands it, ask him.  But nobody wins when people can stake out intellectual turf on these projects, because having more fun shit is better than having less fun shit so long as you don't bloat the fuck out of the game with garbage.  If you really want to return the favour then share some of your work with him.
