Title: 360 Elite.. erm, does it exploding?
Post by: Azazel on October 21, 2007, 05:54:25 PM
Just a quick question regarding the 360 Elite - do they have newer internal hardware revisions that are (more or less) immune to the massive RROD problem?

I believe they are comming out with new versions before christmas sometime that have newer internal parts to make it run cooler.  At least a friend was mentioning that to me a month or two ago.  I'm sure somebody in the know can tell you for sure.  The thing to keep in mind is that every new system, regardless of elite or what ever, is getting these changes.  I think, heh.

The 65nm Falcon chipsets (and GPU, from what I hear) are out in the wild, apparently some of the Halo themed boxes have them.  So they are slowly dripping into the retail channel, but the problem is that there's no way to identify which 360 has the newer chipset.  Of course, time will clear up this problem, but if you want one right now you're pretty much SOL from what I'm aware.

The Elite I have has the second heat sync. It has been solid.

Sink.   :-D

My elite's been solid.  But ehh, I doubt it's anything special.  I got mine fairly early on.

Might wait a few more months. Hopefully there'll be another price drop before Christmas, and it's not like I'd have time to play it till then anyways..

Strictly anecdotal, the Elite I bought immediately after they came out has had zero problems. I use it vertically, and in a well ventilated space. Just don't let your cat knock it over when there's a disc in it.

I ...have the urge to buy one. Like tomorrow. And a pile of games. And a HD-TV in a couple weeks.

But I won't have time to play it till Christmas, and I may be unemployed for a solid 6-8 weeks starting around Christmas Eve, so it's probably smarter to hold off on buying one. There's always Christmas sales, and by then I'll know if I am going to be pauping it or living large with pay over the long break.

I am fairly sure that the heatsink revision is not coupled to the Falcon board, meaning that you may or may not have the Falcon if you have the new heatsink.  I might look that up except there isn't any way to tell what you have at this point, so it's moot.

ok thanks. sounds like it's a smarter long-term bet to just wait a couple of months. Maybe even just after Christmas, as I'm sure they'll turn over an enormous amount of stock in those last couple of weeks.
