Title: This coming month (or so) in games
Post by: schild on August 20, 2004, 08:39:38 PM
It's been a while since mustplay shit has come out (I don't consider Doom 3 must play in any sense of the word). Anyway, here's my list.

Week of 8/29:
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time(PS2)
Pikmin 2(GC)
Phantom Brave(PS2)
Dynasty Warriors 4(PS2)

Week of 9/05:
Silent Hill 4(Xbox)
Pokemon Leaf Green or Fire Red(GBA)
Saga of Ryzom (maybe, possibly, probably not)(PC)

Week of 9/12:
FABLE(Xbox)
In reserves, Sims 2 - it looks...like it may be fun. But well, ^^(PC)

Week of 9/19:
Tiger Woods 2005 (Xbox) + Xbox Live

Week of 9/26:
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2)
Dark and Light (listed as coming out, yea....Right)(PC)

Week of 10/03:
Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude (PC)
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (Xbox)

Week of 10/10:
Dead or Alive Ultimate (Xbox)

There's a bunch of other great stuff coming out - that frankly, I don't give a shit about. On that list would be Vampires: Bloodlines, Half Life 2, Paper Mario: Something about a Thousand Year Door, King of Fighters: Maximum Impact, and more.

What is everyone else looking forward to? Or any recommendations that might not be on the list?

I fucking HATE being a console RPG fan with a limited budget.  There is going to be around 5+ PS2 games that I am really going to want coming out between now and X-Mas, and I will be lucky if I can even afford to buy 2 or 3 of them at the Best.  (I wouldnt be so bummed if there was a hope in hell of getting relatives to buy me games for xmas, when everyone is sooo intent on giving me socks and pants.....)

September is a pretty big MMORPG month and you seemed to have missed it.

The newest EQ expansion, Omens of War is due out I think in the middle of the month, and Ryzom is also supposed to hit shelves sometime in the middle of September. I'm pretty sure Fable is going to be my first purchase, but the idea of getting EQ going again along with getting PvP ready in Ryzom seems fun now that I'm out of school.

Ryzom has PvP?

When I was playing Ryzom in the beta, one of the things I felt was an overwhelming feeling of emptiness. It caused me to get zero enjoyment out of the game. While there is nothing *technically* wrong with it - I couldn't help but feel it just wasn't the game for me.

THey have a very aggresive advertisment in PC:gamer (about 6 pages) so I'm wondering if it might be worth a month of time

Rofl - wtf does large advertisements have to do with the quality of game? If I remember Horizons advertised pretty heavily as well.

Edit: I remember mentioning Saga of Ryzom back on WT.O and everyone laughed at me. Probably had to do with me being me and not me mentioning Ryzom.

Never even noticed that existed. Thanks, I'll look into that this week.

And then, of course, there's Rumble Roses (http://www.gametrailers.com/gt_vault/t_rumbleroses_e3_2k4.html) on 10/26. Mmmmm.

Haha, that trailer is too funny. DOA meets WWE looks like a winning combo to me.

If we're going that far into the future there is of course GTA: San Andreas (http://www.rockstargames.com/sanandreas/) on 10/19.

Damn. I just watched that trailer. The current generation of black and hispanic kids is going to eat that shit up, yo. Unfortunately their parents are going to be picketing on fucking capitol hill. I can't wait for the press backlash from that - it will be spectacular. I'll bring the bee....Fo'ties.

GTA:SA will not just animate kids to kill people, but also to slack off in school and eat fast food, on top of that it'll be glorifying gangs. Oh the coming joys!

Fable, GTA: SA, THUG 2, Bloodlines.

All 4 of those games are must buys for me. Oh HL2 also, but I dont think it will come out in the next 2 months.

I am counting the days till Fable. I just hope it can live up to the hype.

Grand Theft Auto, I dont see any way this cannot be good. I mean, as about as hyped on the whole gansta style as the next guy here (thats to say Im not) but the games have always been fun. Im just hoping I can turn the gang against eachother, and have the both wipped out.

Same with THUG2. These games are just pure fun.

What pisses me off about that new Freedom Force game is that when the original came out, they promised more campaigns for it, but I never saw any on the shelves.

The only reason Freedom Force is getting a sequel is because City of Heroes is making so much cash.

Actually it was always intended to be a three part thing. One freedom force set in the golden age era, one in the more 80s style and the last a more modern style.

Having city of heros hit big can't hurt their funding however but the first freedom force did pretty well sales wise.

That was their plan while working on the first game. And then that plan was thrown in the garbage can. Even now, I dont see any big evolution in 'age' from the screenshots I've seen so far.

In fact, what I see looks like a mod with new heroes / missions. Ten bucks says we're getting nothing more than a new copy of the original game with new maps/missions.

As you'll see, The Third Reich was officially announced way back in October of 2003.  (And the initial talks about sequels way back in 2002.)

talk is to cheap as Freedom Force is to sequel. They talked about it before they released the first game. If talk is the measurement we're going to use, then Freedom Force 3 also would pre-date City of Heroes.

Title: This coming month (or so) in games
Post by: SirBruce on August 23, 2004, 10:41:55 AM
Come now, Arc, you're not that jaded.  These articles have specifics, not just "talk".  Do you really think they named a sequel and made up a bunch of shit and photoshopped some screenshots but did no actual coding until after CoH launched?

Did a FF developer touch you in a bad place or something?

Nasty logic error you have there.  Reminds me of the time I spent two weeks and went through three lab techs chasing an error in my Pascal program, only to realize I'd left the final '.' of the last END statement.  Ah those were the days, when compilers were for real men.

Oh, that's just a bit of the code to keep Bruce away. Right now, I'm running Bruce 2.0, unfortunately that doesn't come with the ability to "force_bruce_lurk_other_sites" function. Hopefully the next revision will. Oh, and the interface is god awful. </tongue-in-cheek>

Of the original list, the only ones I give a darn about is Fable, and Silent Hill 4 (as a rental on xbox).

Just wildly different tastes I guess.  The 5 part movie zip demo/walkthrough they have of masquerade at www.filerush.com is pretty nice.  It does show some logical flaws in their handling of the game though.  Like having to be able to pick a door, and hack a computer in a room to find out the combat weaknesses of a golem you will later face.  But turns out the people with those kinds of skills are also usually the non-combatant types that can talk their way past the gargoyle.  The ones who needed to know that blunt objects are needed would be the neanderthal combat grunts.

I see the age old computer rpg problem of having a ton of pretty much useless skills.

Ah well.

Fable, HL2 (mebbe), Tribes:V, EQ2 (meh), Bloodlines (I actually liked the first game). Not a whole lot I'm all that worked up over, of those I listed, I'm only looking forward to Fable, especially as I have no (new) games to play right now.

What's with the hat hate for Freedom Force? Great game, imo, if you're itchin' for a tussle. Hmm, maybe I'll go replay that.

A single-player demo of Rome Total War was released today.  I'm very impressed.  The tutorial battle is well done, with good voice acting providing the information on how to play the game.  The included battle is great as well, panning cameras and voice sets up the battle before it begins.  The game runs just fine for me at 1280x1024x32 in high detail - XP1600, 512, GF4 4600.  I'll definately be picking this one up.

Games I'd like to buy

Fable
Rome: Total War
ESPN NHL 2k5 (Sept. 1st and only $20)
HL2
Tribes: Vengeance
Vampire: Bloodlines
Freedom Force 2

Games I'll Have the money to buy
...

Fuck.

Oh, as for FF2, the sequel was always planned, as were expansions. However, Crave Entertainment, one of the publishers went tits up, fucked up Irrational's web hosting shit, and caused all manner of problems. EA, being their other publisher, dicked them around about allowing them to do patches to the game (much like the Total War guys).

Ergo, the Irrational Games guys never got the chance to make an expansion.

Also for MMPORPGs:

Anarchy Online: Alien Invasion 8/31
Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promethius 9/21

Also the week before FFXI goes into release in Europe, the base package containing FFXI and both expansions.

Unless your monitor, all drives, and peripherals spontaneously blow up you can get a system that will run all you have listed for about half of that.  $1100 will put you top of the line video card and pretty nice sytem.  I just never know when the right time to make that jump to the front of the bus.  So usually play it bearish and when I notice I am by the emergency exit I move about halfway up.

I'd love to play Rome:Total War, but then I think about how I have both Shogun and Medieval right here, staring me in the face and laughing because I spent maybe ten hours on each title before realizing that:

a)I won't ever have the free time to really focus on the game instead of simply toying with it, and
b)I just plain suck at the games

In the end, I think I'll pass on Rome.  I'm already waiting for HL2, Tribes, and Star Wars: Battlefront/grounds/field/whatever.  Those should satisfy my multiplayer desires quite nicely.

Yup, waiting for a AMD64 board w/ PCI express, then an ATI x800 that will run on said board.

Should run me about $1100, if it doesn't (it should), then I"ll pick up and extra HDD as well.  My current system has lasted me about 2 years and I don't expect my computers to run that long anyways.

EDIT: To avoid the hijack, I just played the Rome:TW demo and am very very excited.  September is going to be quite the month.

Actually, I just went over to the WOTC web site and I saw some wallpaper for the new set.  It's a picture of a samurai type person, so I assume that the set/block is having an ancient oriental Shogunesque style.  I didn't gather that from the name.  Looks like it may be a cool set - anything that moves away from the Mirrodin block is good for me though.

What was Wizards thinking with the naming of this set though?  Now it's going to be called ' CoK Block ' ;)

Hrm. Wow. I hadn't even thought of that. Pretty fucked up if you ask me. I wonder if anyone has gone out of their way to even think of that. As far as I know, the initials on the packs and the oracle text reading for the set is 'COK.' Heh. Marketing will have a field day with this.

Yeah I actually have one of the Champions cards.  I went to my first Friday Night Magic last weekend, they had one to give out, and we rolled for it at the end of the night :).  It has a little "shinto temple" as the set symbol.  It's a standard one damage prevention healer with a mana ability to prevent all damage to target Legendary creature.  Plus it's a fox, which makes me worry a bit about pandering to furries.

Goddamnit, didn't you see Highlander 3!? The Scottish swordsman learned all his sword-fighting techniques from a shriveled Asian man in a cave, before Mario Van Peebles came in and killed everybody and got trapped in that cave! It makes perfect sense for Ninjas to be fighting 6th Century Arthurian knights.
