Title: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Strazos on May 03, 2007, 05:13:56 PM http://www.cnn.com/2007/LAW/05/03/missing.pants.ap/index.html (http://www.cnn.com/2007/LAW/05/03/missing.pants.ap/index.html)
In short, a judge got pissed that a pair of pants were lost for One Day. He is now suing for $65m. Unleash the Lolz. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Abagadro on May 03, 2007, 06:33:39 PM How the hell does that get past a 12(b)(6) motion, let alone a summary judgment and to trial?

Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Miasma on June 14, 2007, 11:18:47 AM Two updates.
The guy broke down in tears (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070613/ap_on_fe_st/odd_67_million_pants_6) describing the horrible anguish caused to him by this pair of pants being temporally misplaced. He only "needs" 2.5 million to cover his pants trauma. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070614/od_nm/usa_trousers_dc) He is hoping the rest will be used as an incentive for other lawyers to follow his heroic lead. I shit you not. The judge was apparently trying to stifle her laughter at that one. The article says the tie he was wearing during his testimony was stained so I guess the Heinz ketchup company had better watch its back. Verdict should be in by next week. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Chimpy on June 14, 2007, 11:46:26 AM The saddest fact of this whole thing is the guy suing is a frickin judge.
And the dry cleaners offered him $12000 to cover replacement years ago and he refused. I bet the damn pants are in his closet. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Lantyssa on June 14, 2007, 02:05:05 PM I really hope the judge not only tosses the case but she awards the defendants a $64 millon judgement.
Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: naum on June 14, 2007, 03:12:53 PM Did anyone catch Judge Robert Bork's $1 million pratfall at the Yale Club (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/06/08/tort-reform-bork-sues-for-1-million-dollars/)?
Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Abagadro on June 14, 2007, 05:56:19 PM The funniest part of that is this quote:
Quote Bork argued that frivolous claims and excessive punitive damage awards have caused the Constitution to evolve into a document which would allow Congress to enact tort reforms that would have been unconstitutional at the framing Captain Originalism suddenly thinks the Constitution can "evolve" as long it is in a direction he wants. Shocking. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: HaemishM on June 15, 2007, 07:52:08 AM I smell new candidates for Raging Douchebag Week.
Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Signe on June 15, 2007, 08:06:26 AM I guess what the judge presiding over the case does next week determines exactly who gets to be the douchebag.
Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Miasma on June 25, 2007, 11:51:04 AM Pants guy loses, (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070625/ap_on_re_us/67_million_pants_14) has to pay drycleaners $1000 in legal costs and might have to pay much more for their legal bills later.

Couldn't they in turn countersue the judge for <something>? Hell, he sued them for 1 pair of missing pants. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Those guys also deal with judges in some states. Filing a frivolous or malicious lawsuit is generally not kosher by most ethical standards. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. I see what you did there. :-DTitle: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Murgos on June 26, 2007, 06:50:28 AM I don't get it.

Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Chimpy on June 26, 2007, 09:30:48 AM I thought he was dis-barred, or in the process of it. There are a couple of organizations trying to get him disbarred. I think they waited until the case was done before they really started the ball rolling. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: NiX on June 26, 2007, 10:32:11 AM Were they at least NICE pants? I really don't get how this even got to court. Wouldn't a normal, sane judge just dismiss the case?
Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Chimpy on June 26, 2007, 10:36:23 AM Were they at least NICE pants? I really don't get how this even got to court. Wouldn't a normal, sane judge just dismiss the case? They were a pair of your normal 100 dollar dress pants that go with a suit. Nothing fancy. The cleaners offered to pay 1200 bucks for a replacement pair when he claimed the ones they found (which were most certainly his at this point) were someone elses. I think the sane judge let this come to court so the public could see how much of a douchebag this guy was becuase it was ultimately thrown out. Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Lantyssa on June 26, 2007, 12:41:05 PM They were grey with blue and red stripes. I'm having a hard time picturing them as 'nice'.
Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Strazos on June 26, 2007, 05:00:56 PM They may have been very subtle pinstripes.
Title: Re: The US Judicial System, at its finest. Post by: Sky on June 27, 2007, 06:55:19 AM Actually, a lot of grey suits have red and blue stripes. As Straz mentions, they are very subtle.
