Title: Who's playing what?
Post by: doubleplus on August 20, 2004, 10:35:48 AM
Hi I'm pretty new. I found this place from anyuzer's site, and it seems pretty dead lately, so here I am with the same idea. We should all find a game and group up. Like I said over there I can commit to WOW or Ryzom and maybe EQ if enough people are willing to organize. I can't be the only one who still plays MMORPGs, right?

Yes, Anyuzer seems to have burnt himself out.

At the moment everyone around here is currently waving their dick in support of either WoW or EQ2 or some other mythical games that may or may not see release. Some people may still be playing City of Heroes, and I'm sure the people in the WoW beta would have no problem looking you up.

Just take a look around, everyone talks about what they play. =P

I haven't played an MMO since the first month of CoH, and before that it was almost a year that I bothered with anything (the last was Shadowbane, I think). If I do play games now, it's console games, and by the looks of the console titles coming up (Fable and the Sports Season), it'll probably remain that way. The only future MMO's I'm really interested in are Darkfall and perhaps DDO. WoW looks cool enough too I guess, and since it's PvP, I may give it a shot.

Was playing CoH... couldn't see the point after awhile.   Played SWG for a bit because the game is rife with meaningful gameplay purpose... but decided I wanted to have some fun too.    Went back to FFXI, and there I've been staying thus far.

FFXI is, like, totally awesome, dude.
(So long as you're not absolutely burned out from PvE core advancement.)

I'm still waiting for beta invitations to Jump To Lightspeed, Everquest 2, and World of Warcraft (which I'll have to wait until open beta since their beta signup process was locked hard when it was open).

Playing DAoC atm.  Yeah, it's a messed up game... but it satiates my mmog jones that I'm too stupid to throw off.

Playing Planetside and WoW beta. Both are cool. Holler if ya want an outfit for PS, mine's uber :P

Just finishing up Deus Ex 2. Not really in gaming mode, still summertime. No mmogs at all, but the occasional game of SimGolf. Been wanting to get in some more Battlefield (either flavor) since my LAN party two weeks ago, but have not actually been playing it.

Mostly playing guitar until Fable comes out, then probably EQ2, then Jade Empire unless I get weak enough to buy a Crapstation2 so I can play GTA:San Andreas.

I am in waiting mostly.  Lingering with my SWG account so my wife can use my lots and I want to see jump to lightspeed when it comes out.  Occasionally dust off my CH in times when a particular hide becomes scarce.  Have to help out my wife's armorsmithing business (she does the selling, but am close friends with the armorsmith as well).

Still have my CoH running.  I want to see the midgame/endgame content but I keep leveling my characters too evenly.  Freaking army of 10-20 guys it seems.  Far from hardcore player, play mostly with my wife and close friends for maybe 2-4 hours at a time tops.

Got bored of Doom 3 before it finished.  Had fun with Spiderman 2 (xbox) for a whole 2 days before charlie stole my power.  Had to bring in the whole xbox to return it (won't eject without power).  Have the urge to rent full spectrum warrior after LOVING the OXM demo of it.  I am finding Dawn of War beta a bushel of fun coop vs computer with a friend.  Going to check out  Chaos Legue multiplayer demo with that same friend and maybe buy that if I like the multiplayer as much as I expect to.

Mostly I am waiting.  The life of the gamer.  Game comes out, fades away too darn fast and then waiting for the next thing.

Star Wars Battlefront is looking real nice.
Fable is a must buy.
Halflife 2
Halo 2... is a super fun version of onslaught mode in UT2k4 worth my annoyances with console fps?  Probably not with Halflife 2 out there.
Mechwarrior 2 looks wonderfully nice.
Planetside resub once the mechs show up.
EQ2 for sure for the first month at least.
WoW maybe.

Currently I play swg and Coh most often. Still enjoying each in their own way. I am currently though looking forward to eq2 or wow. I am in the mood for a fantasy type game and eqlive just isn't doing it for me anymore.

I tried out the omens of war beta man I look at the gear the betabuffed things come with standard and it just kinda makes my eyes roll back in my head. There comes a point when the mudflation is so high and the numbers are so silly they cease to have any meaning.

The dawn of war beta is good fun co op vs the puter looking forward to buying that game.

Chaos league I need to track down an english version of that full game when I can its a good fun game to play.

Edit

When eq2 comes out I may break down and get their uber pass that would let me plink around in planet side as well which I really would like to try on my new system.

Love your name, doubleplus, even if I do think 1984 is rather overpraised.  I suppose us all finding a game and grouping would be rad-to-the-max...but a great many of us are jaded assholes that could never all decide on one MMO.  We each have our own poison, our own net-crack, and giving ours up for another which we just heard on message board x,y,or z sucks donkey dick and testicles in one big gulp would be...difficult.

What a sad bunch we are...well, back to dem saltmines.

Oh, and I am currently playing Natural Selection.

Was playing DAoC until this past week, when I hit 46 and started realizing the end-game blows.

I am game-less now.  Borrowing Doom 3 from a coworker so I can play it whilst recovering from surgery next week.

Other than that... I really didn't like EQ but I have kept an eye on EQ2.  Depending on what y'all say about it, maybe I'll give that a shot.  I love LoTR but MEO will probably suck -- however I am also keeping an eye on that one.

Half Life 2, hurry up!

Just playing WoW, hitting it pretty hard core for me (20 hours a week or so I'd say).  Still paying for EQ (play once every couple weeks to stay in touch) and AC (why I am still paying I'm not sure, have played maybe 30 hours over the past 2 years).

Trying to get into online poker, but it's too much like sex with a condom right now.  Play some NWN now and again and hit D2 sometimes.  Single player wise I always go back to Civ3.

But for the past 6 weeks WoW has been my bitch goddess.

No mmorpgs at the moment.  Quit ATITD a month or so ago.  I probably won't play another until WoW or EQ2, but I'm considering taking a pass on both.

Tried to get through Doom3 but the game just got repetitive and dull.

Mostly playing System Shock 2 and Ultima 7 currently with some ESPN NFL 2K5 for my football fix.  Really, if someone hasn't played SS2 or U7, you should.  Despite the dated graphics, both are sterling examples of very well done games.   SS2 created the type of atmosphere that Doom 3 attempted to piece together using cheap scares.  I should really do some sort of retro review for both of these looking back from the context of the current gaming scene.

Title: Who's playing what?
Post by: Alluvian on August 20, 2004, 02:35:17 PM
What version of U7 are you playing?  How does it run?  Last time I tried it was back in win95 I think in dos mode emulating moslo and all that.  It either ran like shit or really odd where people would kinda warp around making them hard to click on.  Game died for me when the storyline broke and I didn't have an alternate save though.  Some known bug with a missing dagger on a corpse where anytime it happens you are fucked.

Same with system shock 2 I guess.  You running it off original cd/disks or from underdogs, or what?  Are you running the homegrown mod with the updated graphics?

Getting abit off topic here, but I would LOVE to go back and play Cyberstorm again.  That game was awesome (second one sucked) but it is a dos game so it would not run for me in XP.  Is there a way to get this thing running through some dos type emulator in xp or something?  I actually have the original install cd and everything.  Tried the version at underdogs as well with no luck.

For U7 I'm using Exult and U7 disks I got from this Ultima game pack I got off suprnova.  Came with all Ultima games save 9 and means to run them all.  But Exult, IMO, runs it better than the app they include to run dos games.

For System Shock 2, I got the CD off Underdogs.  It took a little bit of working to get running. Mainly I had to add a line to the config file because it hates my video card.  The installation itself wasn't a very intuitive process either.  I'm not running one of the graphical mods, because I've heard some have compatibility problems with XP and really, the graphics don't bother me.  Maybe I'll try them after I finish the game but the graphics haven't subtracted from the experience at all.

For dos games, the app that was included in the Ultima pack seems to work fairly well. It's called DosBox.  Try fiddling around with that, it seems to work pretty well for running Ultima 8.

Im playing WoW beta. On the Horde side of the PVP server. Got a decent guild going.

Also started playing UT2k4 again. Testing out all the new mods. Was playing Half-Life "The Ship" but it got old pretty quick.

Also been playing Spider-Man 2 on Xbox, but I finished all the missions, so I just swing around keeping my virtual city safe from carjackers and muggers.

I am waiting with baited breath for "Fable". 20 days to go.

Currently spending most of my time futzing around in Disgaea (Demonic Pegnuins for teh win!!), and playing a little bit of Thief 3, Doom 3 and CoH when the mood strikes me.

If I had the cash, I would probably also be subbed to at least one of EVE, Planetside, or Asherons Call for some different style MMOG action.

Summer fun was AO since June. I leveled to mid sixties doing quests and solo missions. This is about the same as other level based games I've played, one third or so of the levels.

But summer is ending and I think my turn in AO will again soon.

I started ATITD Beta but have been traveling this week and have not played all week. The decision on this will come down to a choice try to work up in one of the disciplines or not. Learning techs so that you can learn more techs is what burned me out last time and I won't go down that path again.

My GF wants to fire up our SWG accounts again. She likes the entertainer stuff but I don't know. No trade skills again for me, no mining jobs, and combat remains beyond boring. I guess she'll be playin on her own.

So my plan is: Go outside until fall? Read /. every 10 minutes? Drink myself in to a stupor?

Yeah, thats the ticket. Drink!

Summer is a slow gaming time for me b/c I actually have less available time.  That being said, my personal current gaming list is

CoH (tend to play in spurts)
Magic the Gathering Online (still mainly leagues)
ESPN NFL 2k5
and when the mood strikes, Neverwinter Nights

Looking forward to Fable and Jade Empire for sure.

And messing around with Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath with my kids plus assorted other arcade and party games.

Currently I'm enjoying Asheron's Call.  I still can't believe I never gave the game a chance, it's really quite entertaining.  I just borrowed Doom 3 from a buddy and I'm going through that as well.  Fun game, although nothing new was brought to the table except for a shiney new engine - the engine is fantastic.  What I'm really looking forward to are the games that other developers will make with the Doom 3 engine.

I'm waiting for WoW and EQ2.  :)

AC? Nice. I had a toon up to level 80 on DT before the cheating became bad for the second time. I almost came back when they claimed to have gotten rid of speedhack, but it's never the same the second time through. How much better have things gotten? Some of the newer games are starting to take good queues from AC finally, so it might be nice to see where the original is going.

If you pick up CoH anytime soon, I just made a new main, "The Green Rook" on the Virtue server.  Look me up.  I think most of these guys play on Victory, though.

In WOW I'm Darkkeebler for now, and I just started there.

In ATITD beta I'm Maki, but as much as I love the concept, I can't stay up till 4 am rotting flax like I used to.  The coin of that realm is my time doing tedious tasks, and I haven't got enough.

Regarding ATITD, you gotta respect a game that is so totally out there, and I'd like to find a way to play it.  Does anybody know if there's a way a player can drop in for a couple hours a week and still be part of something interesting?

Yes, join a big guild.  Sure, you do a small portion of the menial work but anything you can contribute will have meaning in the grand scheme.

WW2OL, sortof. Not really much since CRS brought in a code of conduct that says I can't be a officer and state political views or complaints, anywhere. The allies got kicked back to almost Dunkirk so my ingame morale went with it.

Galatic Civilastions that I picked up cheep. My PC won't run any new games :(

I'm playing Coh mainly currently, and I get payed to play Ryzom. (although the last two patches have ramped things up quite nicely, especially with the eye candy).

My CoH main was on Victory, and I still occasionally hop on, but have been playing on Virtue more recently due to more other friends playing there.  Probably going to remake my Victory char on Virtue soon, although relevelling the same char will be a bit annoying.

Games, games, games...

Presently, CoH, of course. Still working on a bevy of scrappers. I do like the game (still), but the community is deteriorating. School starts soon; I think that's a major contributer of the recent weirdness.

DOOM3. I play it in bits and pieces. Little here, some there. It gets my stamp of approval.

Far Cry. Cadged a free (?) version with my FX6800, so I"ve been fiddling with it. I do like this one. If a viable coop mode ever appears, this one will be grand fun.

The evergreen jDOOM. Presently abusing myself with the Eternal DOOM megawad. Fiendish doesn't do it justice.

Consoles are kinda dead right now. Edging back into Phantasy Star Online again (GCN version). It reminds me the CoH community isn't that bad after all. I have an on and off Xcom campaign running on my PS2. It gets maybe 4 hours a month.

I was looking on the jDoom website after reading about it elsewhere.  Apparently you need the original Doom/Doom2 WAD files, but I don't own the game, and I couldn't find them anywhere on the web - I thought Doom/Doom2 and even Quake for that matter went into the public domain with the release of their source code, but I could be wrong.  Is there a place to legally download the full versions of said games or do I need to go buy copies?

On MMOG hiatus and playing, and obsessed with, Dominions 2 (http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/), a wickedly cool TBS fantasy themed wargame & offers SP, MP by email, hotseat MP and regular TCP MP. Have written bits and pieces of a review, will string it all together and share soon…

id released the source code of DOOM and Quake. No .wads, though.

DOOM, Heretic, and Hexen were a little before my time, so I've relied on compilations (and friends) for my .wads. Best bet is just buying the Collector's Edition of DOOM. Dirt cheap and has what you need to get jDOOM up and running. I believe I even saw it for sale at id's website.

As for the megawads and similar stuff...you're on your own. They're around. Team TNT still has a site somewhere. I was just there recently, but didn't bookmark it (like a dimbulb). Regardless, there are links on both Newdoom, Doomsday, etc. Supposedly, TNT has a BOOM (or ZDOOM, forget which) engine-only .wad in the making (Eternal DOOM 4, I guess).

One word of warning: I've been very particular in what megawads I"m willing to play. There is a LOT of garbage out there. Some pretty good stuff though. Still, some good stuff has an evil streak. I've got one megawad on file that starts out simply outstanding, then mutates into a...well...just unbelievalbe demon wave attacks. Makes the Suburbs look like a ice cream social. It's interesting--the first few times--but running around trying to fool demons into blasting each other isn't an end game scenario I like.

"Middle-Earth Online," or MEO (pronounced MEE-oh), was slated for release in November. But Turbine, best known for its Asheron's Call multiplayer online games, has pushed the date back to the fall (northern hemisphere autumn) of 2005, convinced that it can use the extra time to turn what is already a good game into a great one, according to spokesman Jason Wonacott.

I actually logged back into CoH yesterday and this afternoon at lunch. Finally got myself to 20 over on Victory.

Also, still popping my head in the battlegrounds on DAoC. Level 24 Scout on Pellinor now.

And of course, still trying to win a game of ESPN NFL 2k5 on the X-Box.
