Title: Spring desktop thread
Post by: squirrel on April 27, 2007, 12:02:33 AM
Ok so I'm procrastinating - I should be developing a resource plan (something no amount of red wine and punk rock can make fun). But no. I think it's time for a seasonal desktop pic thread. I'll start. Sorry if the image breaks the f13.

Your turn.

Ah.  In that case, I'd have you disciplined and fire your boss.

Seriously, I'm all for hawt boomer ass, but times they are a changing and that shit's called a 'hostile work environment' and you should get caned for it.

Yes, I know.  It's hard to imagine me caring about this kinda shit.

8 guys in the office (6 of them battlestar fans, not that it's relevant), no clients coming within 2000 miles of the office, the only female ever entering is the lady that cleans or someone's girlfriend. Can't really see where the harm is. Seriously.

Some of you guys have awesome desktops. What sources do you look at for your desktops? Mine are usually video game or movie desktops and they get boring, fast.

Not everything labelled PC is wrong.

If you don't respect women, you're some serious kind of asshole imo.  Probably because I secretly hate and fear them, to the point of catching them unawares after dark.

Or summat.

Deviantart has a great desktop section if you sort by popular ones. Lots of shit too but the good ones get recognised generally. Also 4chan has a gem from time to time in the general wallpaper section.

I can't look at this thing until I get home, does someone want to paint me a picture with words?  And what country are you from Wolf, out of curiosity?

Title: Re: Spring desktop thread

It's the Maxim picture of Boomer with her ass out.

Stunning picture, lovely looking woman.

Title: Re: Spring desktop thread
Post by: Wolf on April 27, 2007, 07:24:20 AM
It's a shot from a Maxim photo session with Grace Park (Sharon/Boomer) from BSG. She's in sexy undies, but the shot has the tastefulness (is that a word?) that is normally associated with Maxim's sessions.

And I'm from Bulgaria. Which is almost the third world as far as respecting women goes. And I'd very much like to differentiate from that, as I don't want to come off as an asshole - I respect women, that doesn't mean that I don't like to look at them, ANY guy that says that is not true is a hypocrite. Also I want to again say that no women have ever seen my desktop, nor will they ever do. I honestly can't see what the big deal is...

I rotate through pictures I snagged from the Astronomy Pic of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html) site. APOD rules. I also like this site (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/index.php?w=1680&h=1050&sort=date&id=&page=1) for widescreen desktops.

Here's the workstation:

My desktop is pretty sparse because I open everything off the start menu and use my desktop as a dump for temporary files (usually creatively named "hmm", "stuff", "bleh", or "test") or files I'm not sure where to put yet. Also my todo list whenever I have a big list of small things to tick em off easier and putty because I cbf'd putting it elsewhere and making a shortcut for my start menu. :P

I'm not just emo, I also like cute things.

Is that some sort of "live" desktop on the right hand side with the stats updating in real-time?

Yeah. The ExtraView and Tasks panes contain hotlinks to bugs and work items assigned to me. In the lower left is a graph showing the total number of non-resolved bugs and and tasks open each day since January. I've never been able to show my second monitor before, but now that that the header is using a released image, I can at least show that.

Since I've already made a new post, here's my home screen.

I don't play L2 anymore (haven't for ages) but I just really liked the source image this came from.  Not sure how much longer I'll keep it since white backgrounds like that get tiring after a while.  That and I'm too lazy to figure out how to change my icon text to something easier to read.

There's two other images located here (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/gallery.php?cid=9), one using a match and the other a candle, that are along the same lines if you're interested.

It's actually a Penny Arcade Wallpaper dump. I have no idea how I came across it, but I was cleaning out my favorites the other day and I found it again.

Anyone got any idea where I can get Desktop Themes? I only have the WinXP Classic (blue) and Silver ones, and neither allows nearly any modification. The Win2k stuff does, but I miss the 3D elements of XP. And everywhere I look people are trying to offer proprietary application overlays to let me use their specific Themes. I'd rather not go that route as I like to keep as few apps as possible running at any given time (I've got power and memory to spare but old habits die hard).

Edit: Nevermind. Looks like Interfacelift has some Themes that don't require extra crap.

Desktop Themes are for girls. Unless it's Fly-A-Kite OS.
I only use Windows Classic, thankyouverymuch.

Classic FTW.  I cannot stand the default XP theme or any of the stupid little scrolling\unwinding menus.  I want all of my menus and options to open when I tell them to, not based on usage.

I have bad memories of themes from my troubleshooting days with Windows 95\98 and having to deal with people who wanted those cute little cursors but couldn't get over the fact that all of the bloated software they had installed was what was slowing their computer down.  It's amazing how much money they paid me to essentially tell them "I cannot help you with that" over removing their themes...

Anyone got any idea where I can get Desktop Themes?

Themes? Sounds more like you want to mod more than what most folks call 'themes' (http://www.themeworld.com) There's some, though.

My desktop ATM:

Actually, it was the Themes, at least, what Windows XP calls Themes.

It turns out that Themes can't be loaded by the Desktop Control Panel unless they've been signed by Microsoft. So since there's a fat chance of finding freebies with that rating, you can turn to tools that strip the requirement from one of the DLLs in the OS. You're taking your life in your own hands if ya do that though, particularly if you dink around with a zillion Themes without checking the sources.

But heck, that's what System Restore is for.

This is about what my desktop looks like (http://interfacelift.com/themes-win/previews/138_osxp-2.0_full.jpg). Background picture is a collage of my kids, so won't bore anyone with that. Of course, they're both girls too, and will be surrounded by a digital stockade until they enter seminary... *nods*

Ummm, girls don't tend to go to seminaries.  Granted, they might be popular there (okay, maybe not in Catholic seminaries), but I still maintain that it's a bad idea.

I'm currently rotating those. Totally worth it.

I consider it one of my core competencies to completely flub a joke :) Thanks for the correct.

Here's this month's background.  Just recently changed it because I wanted something simpler.

Girls actually do go to some protestant seminaries. My step-sister went to one in Indiana.

Considering where I grew up you were weird if you DIDN'T go to seminary and "heed the call" I'd say not going to seminary (me) was more out of the ordinary than not.

It's probably my own childishness talking, but linking the word "girls" and "seminary" makes me think of blurry lensed Cinemax Late Night.

I agree. Someone pull that trigger.
