Title: Ok, I need help deciding, seriously.
Post by: Bunk on April 25, 2007, 09:49:04 AM
I'm moving in to my new place this weekend. I have a budget for furniture. I have convinced myself that a console counts as furniture. I need help deciding. Just to be preemptive, I don't want a Wii - it's not the type of gaming I'm looking for.

I have a PS2 right now. Games I typically play on it:
NHL
Madden
GTA
Tekken
Raw vs Smackdown
Bully

I love RPGs, but for some reason have never gotten in to Squeenix games, so that won't affect my decision. Mass Effect on the other hand might. I do like console shooters, especially co-op.

Tech situation - older HDTV - 1080i, with one DVI input. I'm likely going to need a new reciever to connect everything.
I'd like to use the device as my dvd player rather than buying a new one. Hooking it up to the home network and being able to play media through it as well would be nice. I don't have the Media Center version of XP.

So - PS3, or the 360?

The 360 has games.

And, get a fucking Wii.

PS3 is a much better machine than the 360.  If you want online play, however, you would be better served by a 360.  Your software list seems rather neutral, but the 360 has some great games now... PS3 not so much, unless you count PS2 games.

Title: Re: Ok, I need help deciding, seriously.
Post by: stray on April 25, 2007, 10:13:22 AM
Bah. They both have games. The 360 has a better selection, of course, but it isn't that bad on the PS3.

RPG-wise, both are lacking now. But the 360 will get some stuff much sooner than the PS3 (the PS3 does have a better build of Oblivion though -- but with only one expansion).

Shooter and action wise, X360.

If you want sports stuff, they're on equal footing (except for Soccer).

Fighting wise, the PS3 wins (both for VF5, and the Tekken port).

BC wise, the PS3 wins.

I'd suggest you look at the fall lineup and buy according to what appeals to you.

I think I'm gonna import Railfan and Folk's Souls in a month.

I really like this region free bit on the PS3.

Oh yeah, I somehow forgot about the region-free thing, so you can play American games on your Canadian PS3.

If you like console shooters, I'd go with the 360.  RPGs just aren't there yet. The stuff I've seen and played at schild's has impressed me (mostly shooters).  The only real game I just couldn't get used to the controls was Gears of War.

Network stuff seems to be pretty nifty on it also.  schild managed to buy points, dl a game, and then play me co-op in a matter of a few minutes.

schild hasn't busted out the ps3 much in my presence.  Although I did kind of want to try VF5.  PS3 is just scary looking.

I'm hoping that was said in jest...

I'm strongly leaning towards the new Xbox right now. Its $549 up here, comes out on May 4th. I've always been a Sony guy, but the game lineup really does looking stronger on the 360, especially with GTA coming out on both simultaneously. Of course I'll have to buy a new reciever with HDMI switching as well... fun.

You should buy a PS3 so that you will have nothing to play and be able to focus on your studies  :-P.

As an added bonus the crushing weight of your buyer's regret will provide the wisdom needed to make better purchasing decisions after you graduate.

QFT

Get a 360 if you actually want to play games. PS3 won't have anything worth playing till holiday season, and then 360 will get most of the same games anyway.

Hay! That's what I named my pc.

Wish I'd gone with the black model, though this one hides dust better.

On topic, my father is a huge xbox shooter fan (padtard!) and I recommended he get a 360. Glad to hear you guys give it the shooter nod (and he all but beat Halo on the hardest setting, so...Halo 3). Then I told him to sock his old lady in the pie hole and hook it up to his 1080p Samsung DLP instead of the old CRT she makes him game on upstairs. What's up with that? ;)

Oh, and considering I just took out a bank draft for $8900.00 to complete the down payment on my condo, I think I have other things to give me buyer's regret.

The 360 is about to have it's 2nd generation of games released.  The PS3 is going to have to wait another year for that.

That said, I will probably be adding a PS-3 to my collection in the nect month or two.

Right now, hands down the 360. Eventually the PS3 may have some good games, but the 360 already has some good games and alot of the good games coming down the pike will be on both systems. The PS3 may have better technical specs but I think the PS2 has shown that technical specs aren't as important as people think.

Besides, xboxlive and achievements rock.

Have't had a chance to play the PS3 in a few weeks, but last I checked, XBox Live Arcade was kicking ass in terms of cheap, fun, downloadable games.  And you can download whole seasons of TV shows on the 360 which, if you're into obtaining them legally, is pretty useful.

Title: Re: Ok, I need help deciding, seriously.
Post by: stray on April 25, 2007, 02:20:33 PM
Yeah, I'd say the 360 (as well as the Wii) beat the PS3 there too.

Then again, it seems like they're going for something different. Games like Warhawk, Calling All Cars, Little Big Planet, Gripshift, and flOw seem to be what they're "downloadable strategy" is about more than the retro stuff (though there are some Midway classics available now, and some SNK and Capcom stuff mentioned in the other threads -- and of course, the 360 has similar titles like Geometry Wars too). Most of what I've seen them use it for (or planning to use it for) is making it an avenue for indie and online specific gaming more than retro titles.

Does the 360 have anything similar to Warhawk planned? Or isn't there some kind of megabyte restriction they've employed for downloadable titles (think it was recently raised for SotN)?

It's pretty much guaranteed that, somewhere around the middle of the PS3 lifecycle, it will have the most and best downloadable games.

Unfortunately, you'll have to have a credit card to get them HOHOHOHO.

No, really though, I expect HOME to change things for the better on this front. HOME could be breakthrough.

Or just a shitty second life.

I don't know, they've been pretty sluggish releasing content, games or otherwise, on the PSN unless you're overly fond of movie trailers.  Fuck, Warhawk is only ending up there because they seemingly couldn't get a decent single player game out of it and decided to cut their loses.

I'm not sure how many more you want. It's not a bad list for 6 months in..

Tekken 5

flOw
Gripshift
Gauntlet II
Mortal Kombat II
Joust
Lemmings
Q-Bert
Rampage World Tour
Go! Sudoku
Super Rub a Dub
Championship Sprint

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Rocketmen: Axis of Evil
Nucleus
Talisman
Little Big Planet
Calling All Cars
Warhawk
Super Stardust HD

And the PSOne stuff (whenever they work heh)

For your tastes, I'd say the 360.

I recommend the PS3 to everyone who tries to make the same decision since I think it will inevitably end up with the most market share this generation, but if you're going to play the odd FPS title, sports games, and don't really dig JRPGs the 360 is pretty much your best bet.

I believe you no longer need to Windows XP Media Center edition to stream media files through the Xbox 360 from your PC if you have Windows Media Player 11 installed on Windows XP SP2. I don't believe the PS3 has that sort of OS integration though of course it can play any supported media files you have stored on its hard drive.

I just realized you said you had a 1080i tv when Trippy quoted it.

Don't buy a PS3. Doesn't support 1080i properly and doesn't upscale 720p games to 1080i. In other words, you'll play EVERYTHING at 480i.

Get a 360. You don't have a choice anymore.

He could still play in 720p without any funky scaling effects if his TV has 1:1 pixel mapping.

Damn, that's a bummer.

It should be mentioned that it will downscale to 480p, not 480i (but will downscale 1080p to 1080i...though there are only a handful of titles like that atm). Not that it really matters though.

It doesn't downscale 1080p to 1080i correctly yet.

It's the biggest flaw of the system.

The Biggest.

Hmmm, they come out Sunday.

Where do you live and is there an EB Gamestop near you? I can find out allocation and possibly get one held for you if possible.

Edit: For those of you wondering, I can't do this for a Wii. Gamestops are told 24-48 hours in advance, and they usually have a list of people waiting.

Well, if you can influence EBGames in Canada, the nearest to me is:
EB Games #857
Guildford Town Centre
2965 Guildford Town Centre, Unit 2264
Surrey BC, V3R 7C1 CA
(604) 953-0555

I think they ship up here a couple days later - the websites are saying May 4th I think.

If you can't, thanks anyways.

Yea, I think I'm the only other regular here in BC. There are a few in Washington State I think, but our corner of the continent just isn't as well represented as say the AZ area, or Texas.

I actually live in Van right now - moving back to Surrey this weekend though, as that's the only place in the lower mainland that a single guy can afford to buy a condo.

Can you at least downscale to 720p?

The max resolution for my tv is 1080i, but I can also do 720p.  So is there a menu system like the 360's where you specify what resolution you want the video to output to, or does it just try to do it automatically and with limited success?

That may be, but in my defense. I not only helped him move but I let him convince me to drive the 1ton cube van (oh and moving day was on NFL draft day. Grr) then the next day I went with him to Ikea to help him pick up his new dining room table and chairs then went to his place to help him build it. Oh and dragged my GF along to help in all of this.

And to top all of this off I have never hit on his little sister. To me that adds up to best friend ever. sort of.

Have you even played it? It's not a bad game. Just a niche game, and a bit demanding.

It's the equivalent of someone saying that they'd buy an XBox for MotoGP. And there wouldn't be anything wrong with that either.

I've been trying to make this decision myself recently and I'm pretty sure I'm going with the 360 (for the games). The one thing that is holding me back is that I really want to watch Planet Earth in either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and an 360 elite with a HD player makes the 360 almost a hundred dollars more than a PS3. I'm also about to buy my TV and I was wondering if it was worth it to spend the extra bucks to get 1080p or if a 1080i would be sufficient for a 360. Can the 360 really take advantage of a 1080p tv?

If you're getting a TV over 50", get the 1080p. Under 50", it doesn't make much difference imo.

Absolutely get 1080p. I like my 720p set but would take a 1080p version in a second if I could swing it. Be a bit rough on the gpu, though.
