Title: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 22, 2007, 02:23:10 AM
So. Since people ask from time to time for recommendations from me (read: constantly), I figured I'd make some spreadsheets. I started with the PSP because it was the most recent request (like earlier tonight - and I was bored). This is what came out:

http://www.f13.net/collections/schild/psp.html

I made it with Open Office (newest version, version number: whatever), and I liked the HTML output. Anyway, here's what I figured.

1. Limited space for comments. Keeps things brief and visceral.
2. 1-10 score, no decimal points, scored in a vacuum UNLESS
  • There is a version available on another system.
  • There is a direct sequel.
  • There are other games that are easily - read: VERY EASILY - compared to it
  • I.E. Ridge Racer can not, in any way, be compared to Spectral Souls or Mega Man: Powered Up, etc
3. Dev house matters and deserves recognition.
4. IGN's collection shit is too ugly.

Now, what I was thinking is - would anyone else be interested in doing the same with their collections? It really puts some perspective on shit once you list everything. I figured we'd make a static page for it, and have the templates available for download. I'm sure there's other stuff that could be added to the templates to provide more information, but it would be neat to be able to compare and contrast thoughts. Would probably open up to a lot new conversation as well.

Anyway, discuss.

It sounds like fun, but I refrained from becoming a teacher because I hate rating things. With a vengerance. So i'm just looking forward to other peoples spreadsheets.

That was the other thing. The real reason I have scores is because I want truly awful games to be recognized as that. I'm almost tempted to just give games an emoticon scale to express proper rage for Spectral souls.

Powered Up is that good, eh?

Yes.

I'm on board.  I love making lists and labeling things.  I'm like a slovenly Monk that doesn't solve crime... so nothing like Monk, I guess.  It is most likely AHDH instead of OCD, but you play the cards you are dealt.

I'll make a PS3 one. I'm too lazy for listing PS2 games (don't have all the ones I've played/owned at one time anyways).

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: Strazos on April 22, 2007, 10:43:06 AM
I could go for something like this. It would give me a great excuse to properly compile every game I currently own into one discrete space.

But please explain what you mean by "Scored in a Vacuum," and what would violate that method.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 22, 2007, 10:47:56 AM
I really didn't compare games in a genre or subset unless they fell under port, sequel, or direct ripoff. While it would be easy to compare Valhalla Knights and Monster Hunter, I didn't - just because I can, doesn't mean I should.

I've already got my DS list compiled at home, and will probably get to PS2 tonight.

Can we rate King of Fighters against Street Fighter? Or better yet, Virtua Fighter?  :-P

No.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea

I guess by collection you mean games you currently own. I've had an ass load of games, I just don't keep them around.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 22, 2007, 12:48:04 PM
Well start keeping track! What I'm thinking, is a page set up with usernames with a tree under each to each collection they've given to me.

It'll be a good way to see trends in taste and who knows, maybe WUA has the same taste in games as Sinij.

God, that would be awesome.

Stray made an interesting comment. I'm going to add percent status to my spreadsheet to denote how far a game is from completion.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: Strazos on April 22, 2007, 04:12:53 PM
So then what do you do for stuff like Castlevania, which goes to some dumb number like 210%?

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: stray on April 22, 2007, 04:14:45 PM
To point out the obvious: I'm not sure how I could even list a percentage if I didn't finish a game to begin with.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 22, 2007, 04:16:51 PM
You guesstimate. I know when I'm about 50% of the way through a game. It's an amount of completion, not the actually in-game completion #.

And if you don't know, you're probably in the first 25%.

Stray made an interesting comment. I'm going to add percent status to my spreadsheet to denote how far a game is from completion.

You mean how unfinished the shipped game is, or how much you have left to play through?

And what about PC titles?

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 22, 2007, 04:18:37 PM
The completion amount (of the core game). I.E. Under DDS2, I would list my completion as 99% because I'm at the last boss. It'll just give people an idea of how much time you've played.

And what about PC titles?

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: Azazel on April 22, 2007, 04:19:55 PM
Are those listable too? And do we have a release-date limit for old stuff?

Because, you know. M.U.L.E. and stuff.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 22, 2007, 04:25:09 PM
Oh, no. No limit reallly. Just make sure it runs on modern hardware. I don't want to see Loom on that list. It may be best btw, for PC stuff, to list the year of release. With console stuff, at least when we say PS2 or Dreamcast - we know the years it was out. Yes, I think year will be necessary for PC.

(i.e. Windows 98 or later, don't need to see no early dos shit, but really ,they're your lists, up to  you. I just feel like year should be a requirement.)

Edit: Also, shareware. Lol. Don't list shareware. See, I actually BOUGHT Snood. i don't know anyone else that did. :P

Can you still submit a list if it's not that big?  I ask because I don't get to play taht many games anymore, but I think it's a cool idea and would like to contribute.

Also, what is the preferred method of contributing, email?

I'll get some templates made tonight.

And I'll setup an email address. I'm just busy with Pokemon at the moment :)

Just checked the thread again, and Stray's post above about comparing is a pretty good point - maybe KoF can't be compared to VF, but surely it can to SF?

Or you want them kept to KoF series and SF series? SF2->SFA3 is a decent stretch in sequel-land, and then there's the Capcom vs SNK and the X-Men/Marvel Super Heroes/vs Capcom clusterfuck of inbred/sequel 2d fight-em-ups.. not to mention that Fatal Fury/AoF and the whole SNK gang pretty much started as SF2 ripoffs...

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: stray on April 23, 2007, 03:54:02 AM
Well, many in the SNK gang were originally Capcom employees. KoF, Samurai Showdown -- both started by ex-Capcom guys. Guilty Gear -- ex-Capcom and SNK guys.

Mentioning VF is a stretch, but I find it difficult to judge the 2D stuff in a vacuum.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 23, 2007, 05:28:49 AM
KoF 98 can be compared to Kof 2003.
Street Fighter 3 Zero Upper can be compared to Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting.
Guilty Gear Midnight Carnival can be compared to Guilty Gear XX Accent Core.

Street Fighter Zero 3 Upper can not be compared to Kof 2003.

Why? The point is to keep it pure. And as games come out and you add and change, you don't have to putz around remembering some sort of hierarchy in fighting games. Enough releases and it turns into a mess. Or rather, I plan on keeping mind updated.

Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting are 2 seperate - and coincidentally absolutely shitty series. Much like World Heroes. Garou is the only good thing that came out of it.

KoF's flow is completely different from Streetfighter by 1998 anyway.

Post by: schild on April 23, 2007, 05:40:40 AM
Oh, and I very much wanted to get this done last night, but I played some Pokemon while lying on my bed and I have issues with not falling asleep whenever I lie down... so I passed out for 10 hours. It was pretty great.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: Azazel on April 23, 2007, 06:18:45 AM
I imagine these truckers are going to need a lot of regular updating.

Or initially, at least.

Actually, comparisons are kind of moot anyway, since the comments are pretty much a 1-liner, and people will subconsciously compare them to others in the same close-genre to a degree at least. Unless a comment for KoF is "buy SFA3x32 instead" it won't really make a difference.

It's amazing how low a score you can give games a few months after they incubate in your brain.

Here's my PS3 list. Pretty small for now. Maybe I'll get around to a PS2 or PC one later.

Ok. Here's my DS list (http://www.f13.net/collections/schild/ds.html). Added completion rate. Stray, you might want to left align the comments, developer, and title.

First thing I'm doing after dinner is making the templates for Open Office and putting them up. I'll also provide necessary links. Probably make a stickied thread.

Great idea, sounds like fun.  I'm actually looking forward to doing this once I get a few days off.

I think I'm going to feel bad once I list all the games I haven't finished though.

Heh. I'd finished more than I thought. Just wait til my PS2 list. Ugh.

Is 50% of your PS2 list of titles going to be japanese words I don't understand?

I also except 'Atlus' to be that same 50%.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

(Not that I'm hating on Atlus. Steambot Chronicles, go.)

Steambot?  Have you played Metal Saga?

Locking this thread to open up a new one. Will have updated template, decided to keep in mind something that was said. So I added a column.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 24, 2007, 01:45:59 AM
Quote
Really easy. I took peoples advice, and added a column. Final version (for now?) are as follows.

1. Title
2. Developer
3. Score [1-10] (Centered)
4. If you liked this, try...
5. Comments

For the developer field, it's best to use MobyGames as the fanatics who fill that shit out find out who the real developer is. Some games, particularly obscure titles (even PC ones) aren't listed there though. I hate to say this, but use IGN. Because of their "game collection" area, and the number of total fanbois that go there, they've gotten very exact - or rather - better than their competition at listing the proper developer. Proof of that: Hot Shots Golf Fore! (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/608/608285.html). Most places would just list Clap Hanz OR SCEI (usually just Clap Hanz). Well, it was both.

As for the score, I know you can't score in a vacuum. But at least try to keep the scores in very close relation to contemporaries (Advance Wars and Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea are NOT alike - but Advance Wars: Black Hole Rising and Advance Wars DS are) or within their series, as I just mentioned in the parentheses.

If you liked this... well, that's self-explanatory, isn't it? If it's unique, just leave it blank. If it's the best of it's genre, just leave it blank. Hell, on my sheet, I've put question marks next to some recommendations. For example, Children of Mana. Sure there's stuff like it. But it's crap also. As such? If you liked this you might as well try... and I put "Lost Magic?" What? Misery loves company. The other important thing is to TRY and keep it within a system. I'm only recommending DS stuff within the DS library. That will obviously be hard for newer systems (PS3, 360) BUT! Those systems are backwards compatible. On some stuff, I have listed upcoming games, particularly when I've played them in original format when possible (read: Japanese) or spoken to someone that has and compared them. These lists are fluid, they can be updated. Also, for DS and PSP stuff, I may have listed a Japanese title as a recommendation, in this case, I have put a (J) afterwards. And yes, for FF3 on the DS I recommended FF6 for the GBA, some rules are just made to be broken - though the DS can play GBA games... so I'm walking a fine line.

Finally, keep comments short. One sentence. A word and a sentence.

For examples of all of that...

Clicky! Updated DS list (http://www.f13.net/collections/schild/ds.html).

Spreadsheet Download (.ods, Open Office Format) (http://www.f13.net/collections/gc_template.ods)

Here's a link to Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/index.html). It's a tiny download and... well, I like it more than Office 2007.

So, post links in other stickied thread (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=9849.0), and discuss here.

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: stray on April 24, 2007, 02:48:35 AM
Sorry, but I don't think we should have to list the developer part at all, let alone being as exact as MobyGames. They're just supposed to be one-lined, personal ratings, right? Why not keep it simple?

Not that developers don't matter, but I think more people would do this the less research and hassle free you make it. It'd be better if someone could just list a game they have off the top of their head and have that be enough.

My two cents.  :-)

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea
Post by: schild on April 24, 2007, 03:06:45 AM
Well, if people really don't want to put developer, they don't have to I suppose. It's mostly there so people can look up other games they liked by the same developer and find something they might've missed.

I thought the controls were more awful on the PS2. Honestly I don't like the controls anywhere, but for some reason I adapted to the PS3 ones really easily, mostly since every 3D PSP game has shitty controls.

How should we handle expansions? Especially ones that are kind of necessary to finishing a story (Baldur's Gate 2's Throne of Bhaal  for instance).

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea

Title: Re: Game Collection Idea

So you would prefer a separate entry for expansions, instead of packing them with the core game?

Yea, because some expansions are dogshit.
