Title: Ads with sound
Post by: Calantus on April 19, 2007, 03:53:18 AM
Are there supposed to be those stupid smiley ads with sound ("SAY SOMETHING!" "WHAAAAT?!") on the site?

The last 24 hours, almost nearly every ad I've seen has been new, but I've only seen them once per actual visit, I think they're switching over ads, the weirdness should stop soon, if it doesn't by the weekend, I'll email them.

Ads? (http://adblockplus.org/en/)  What are those? (http://www.pierceive.com/filtersetg/)

Websites in generally that have sound enabled by default tend to get shut down very quickly by me. It's just rude to blast your shit imo. Not to mention it clues in the boss I'm dicking around on the intertubes.

Stuff

I chose not to press Continue button.

No Script and Mozilla are really good to me... hosts file as a backup method also works. If you surf at work (Now, don't lie, what else would you be doing?) you must block a lot of things to keep it kosher and under the radar. Proxy is also very desirable in case they track your usage (and many do) or you can just VPN into your home machine and do it that way.

What worries me is that AddDoubleClick was purchased by Google... Does it mean Google is trying to get its share of 'Punch The Monkey' pie?

Do me a favor, I know a lot of people block ads, but don't fucking tell me that you do. It's the only revenue source for the website and it makes you look like an asshole who's too arrogant to look (or Not Look) at a few banners to magically create money for the website.

I do, however, understand the complaint about sound in the ads, that's bothersome.

Perhaps you should create a 'subscriber' option which disables the ads for those who have paid. The adverts per person probably aren't so much that it would be prohibitive for many people. That way some people could live without ads while reserving being an asshole for other occasions.

That takes work, looking at ads Doesn't.

Edit: That's to say, it would take more work to do than would be worthwhile. More than that, blocking ads is free, having us turn off ads isn't. Why would a troll like Sinij pay to not have ads (low blow!) when he can just turn them off.

Meh the ads aren't bad except for the ones with sound, the ones that pop up and the damn ad server that still crashes firefox in Vista.

What blows my mind is the ones that are Chicago-targeted.  I am pretty sure that somewhere in my profile I may have listed Chicago as my hometown, but dang, that's either a crazy coincidence or some fab data mining.

Title: Re: Ads with sound
Post by: schild on April 19, 2007, 02:31:28 PM
Nah. That's just IP address stuff. Most companies do that now. Your IP address pings their server and boom, Chicago ads.

I've got pop-ups and sound turned off on my CP over there, as I said, there must be something wrong if it's still happening. Sigh.

Ok - you have an ad that crawls over the screen and asks to take a survey. It's shit like that that makes me want to turn them off.

Are they even paying for a case of beer a week?

Title: Re: Ads with sound
Post by: schild on April 19, 2007, 02:36:55 PM
They're paying for the server.

Edit: And I don't have an ad that crawls all over the screen. I saw that one yesterday. Showed up when the ads with sound showed up. Like I said, I'm going to look into this.

Post by: schild on April 19, 2007, 02:40:03 PM
That one that scrolls around the screen has been seen a TOTAL of 61 times. TOTAL.

That means the following:
1. It's in our rotation by error and I'll resolve it.
2. Considering the number of page views in this forum, you and I are terribly unlucky.

I'm well aware of that fact my friend...

Unless his ISP uses something like Adzilla. Then they're feeding his zip code (and other user info) to a proxy server that substitutes ads on the fly for more local ones. Site gets paid the same because they keep it within ad companies, ISP makes money from the higher CPM value, consumer gets ads that are tailored to their locale and browsing preferences. This stuff is becoming more common with ISPs because its perceived as free money.

Well I'm definitely not deactivating my beloved AdBlock, but if you give me a PayPal address I'll wipe out my guilt and never worry about it again.

Somehow, I never see the ads with sound, or popups, or that move all around. I only ever see the banner ads.

Title: Re: Ads with sound
Post by: schild on April 19, 2007, 07:25:28 PM
There are less than 300 views of any of the weird ads. That's why I'm not gonna call in and be angry. 300 views is a drop in the bucket.

However, check this.

1,000 views of the sound one would net $4.00.
1,000 views of the moving one would net $9.00.
1,000 views of a popunder (which an unlucky 11 people got) would net $11.00.

If those were the only ones we had, I could quit work and hire full time writers within 6 months.

I'd pay to support website that provides me with endless entertainment. I will also pay so I could get away with more things. I can pay per month or per Trammel thread, whatever suits you. Do you take MC? But I will not watch/click adds.

You also can put donations option back.

They're not very nice to you, are they, sinij?

For once sinij is right.  Just start charging per post, per Trammel thread, and the crazy UO vets will make you rich.  Charge for each post in the SWG thread, with extra fees the higher the page number goes, and you'll be able to buy Blizzard.

I'll go ahead and unblock the ads here if I can do it without getting raped by punch-the-monkey shit elsewhere.  I "whitelisted" this site in AdBlock, should I be seeing them again?

EDIT:  Never mind, the answer is yes.  Took a few minutes to go into effect.

Just to give you an idea, about 12% of the people here have the ads unblocked, that's how geeky and fucked up the PC Crowd is. That's right. I'd prefer it be 12% of them have it blocked...

Bring back donation button, biotch. Also put goatse or something into 'about us' instead of a broken link on a front page. Yes, I know, what front page...

Also why does it surprise you that only 88% of jaded mmorpg gamers are computer literate and know how to use teh intraweb?

It would be a lot better if there weren't so many fucking Flash ads.

That's what you get when you go CPM. I hate flash. I despite flash. But I'll accept flash when it's the only option.

I've never seen the point of blocking ads really, I never notice them unless they flash like mofos, blare noises, or obstuct my view. As long as I can ignore the ads you can continue to show them to me. :P And yeah I figured it was something you hadn't green-lighted, otherwise I woulda just adblocked and not said a word.

Title: Re: Ads with sound

I don't really see them much either.  I keep my sound off unless I want to hear something so I don't hear them.  Sometimes I do notice and run off to find a new outfit for my Zwinky.

I specifically whitelisted ads for F13 only. I don't even notice them anymore- they aren't intrusive. The good news is that I probably have more page views than 80% of the folks who have the ads blocked, so I am doing more than my share  :-D

The flashblocker I use downloads the flash but then hides it (with the option of viewing it) so it would still count as being a download/view.  The entire tribalfusion and doubleclick domains are blocked at the hosts file though.

I would buy a couple overpriced coffee mugs with he old cursive f13.net written on them and a t-shirt/hoodie with "foozle" written on it.

There, I think I whitelisted f13.  Maybe.  Computers are hard.

It used to work and I didn't even notice it stop when I upgraded to AdBlockPlus.

Please put up a donation/subscription link so I do not have to take it easy with the image association stuff.

(Camino auto-blocks ads, and as you know Macs are hard.)

History has shown what happens there:
Two days later with $3,000 in the donation bin.  Schild, after being hired to work on SWG, will turn the site over to Wayabvpar. Who in turn will pocket the money and run off to Europe to consumate his online romance with a male gigalo.

I only started blocking ads from f13 when the crappy flash shit started showing up.  If you would toss them, I'd drop my blocks.

Flash is the only way to get CPM.

Google ads are only good if people click on them. Only stupid people click on ads.

This is good, I feel like a right whore clicking ads I don't care about, but feel bad if I don't when I should. :(

Flash is the only way to get CPM.

Let me be more specific; I don't care if they use flash, javascript, text, animated gifs or movies.  I hate that the flash ad flies around my screen and gets outside the little box it should stay in.

I don't have the ads blocked.  They've been pretty easy to ignore, much moreso than television ads.  I'm not seeing the huge problem, honestly, if it's what helps keep the site afloat.
