Title: Words
Post by: Signe on April 09, 2007, 04:10:37 PM
Word are really important today.  There are even words you can't say.  Today I learned a new word you can't say.  The H word.  So we have:

The N word.
The C word.
The B word.
The F word.
The MF word.
The GD word.
And now the H word.  Thank you Mr. Imus, whoever the bloody hell you are.  (there's probably more but words are hard)

Of course, the N word is the one you can't say the most.  Unless you are an N.  Even then, you have rules.  You can't just say, "YOU N!"  You have to phrase it properly.  "Yo.  My N.  Wazup?"  You have to also do the special, sekret arm and hand motions that accompany using the N word.

Anyway, not long ago I received an invite to a budding rap artists myspace page.  (even though all I have is a log in and no actual page myself)  Somehow, I've been embraced by the N community.  Which is very, very nice, I must say!  All of his friends call each other N words and H words and MF words.  They have pictures of themselves flashing shiny gold teeth and using the special body language.  I'm thinking of accepting the offer because then I can say the N word in public.  Right?

PS  If you know the name of any super cool hip hop/rap artists who aren't white or British, please tell me.  I don't seem to know any.  Also... don't bother complaining.  I've already reported myself for this post via PM since you can't report your own crap.

I stopped watching the TV before I learned what the H word was. Comeon, fill me in, I need something new.

Edit: Which C are you talking about? The friendly term for a Chinese person or What most women under the age of 21 turn out to be?

On a quasi-serious note, the word that my circle of friends is having trouble with is Gay. I'm in my mid thirties, and I have to admit, perceptions and attitudes have changed quite a bit since I was in highschool. Gay was, and still is, a very widely used term to mean anything undesirable. "That's totally gay."

Now normally I'm the last guy to give two shits about political correctness, but one of my best friends married a girl from the San Fran area and she moved up here with him. She was, to say the least, rather shocked at how often we used Gay as a derogatory word. It wasn't intentional - I don't have any close gay friends, but do have good relationships with friends of friends and coworkers that are openly gay. It's just a word that we've always used that way.

So, for the sake of friend, we are trying to stop. It's fucking hard. You don't realize how deeply words can get ingrained in to your speech patterns. It's gay.

How can anyone listen to that asshole after Tawana Brawley I don't know.

My dad is a freak for Imus. He's been pretty pissed.

Can't say I care for Imus' comments though --- But he's hardly racist. He's had a variety of guests on his show that no one could possibly classify as typical "redneck" stuff. The cowboy hat is just his clothing style -- He's more of an old rock disc jockey. Not a hillbilly. Many of his recurring guests are black.  Bill Russell and Suge Knight, for example (well, at least Suge used to be on) -- and those guys are his friends. Not just guests. And politically speaking, he gives a lot of airtime to moderates and liberals, and insults everyone else (he hates the Clintons though).

My friends and I at work were looking at this team today on their website. They've got a hot chick - who we knew would be hot when we saw her last name. Zurich.

And they've got this other chick who we made fun of before we even opened her profile. Who isn't gonna make fun of someone named Epiphanny.

Goddamn. It's still funny. Best part is her parents have normal names. They gave Epiphanny a sibling who i think was named Epeen.

And to be honest, he should've replaced "Ho" with something else. The last thing I think of when I think Women's Basketball is Ho. But of course, I'm talking about the accuracy of the insult here.

Racist though? Maybe. Nappy? Definately.

That would probably be a frighteningly witty put down if it wasn't for the fact that I'm not really following Signe at all in this thread and I'm confused what words are what.

Further, I wouldn't be terribly annoyed at someone not knowing Dead-Sea Pedestrian from the Bible, but you should be stoned for not catching the reference from Monty Python.  Even, and I want to make this really clear, they do say Jehovah.

What I don't get is why Imus gets all this heat for saying "nappy-headed ho" and yet the entire brown-hating anti-immigration/national security screeds that O'Reilly and Buchanan have been giving for years gets completely ignored. Title: Re: Words
Post by: stray on April 11, 2007, 08:39:15 PM
OK, MSNBC pulled him.

Now I'm kind of pissed. That shit isn't right. People are turning Don Imus into a poster boy for the KKK, and he isn't even close. As I said, he's had plenty of black guests and friends on his show. And the guy is far from being just a general scumbag -- He literally turned his own home into a camp for children with cancer i.e. he spends millions of dollars and hundreds of hours treating sick kids and letting them have fun on his ranch. Most of the time, he just broadcasts from there. Everyone who is calling for blood doesn't know what he's about.

Even with the comment he made, it still isn't racist. It's just cranky grumbling from an old fart, about a fucking SPORTS TEAM of all things. Crude, but not racist.

Worst yet, Snoop Dog of all people is defending his use of the word "Ho" against Imus now -- Because his use of it isn't "racist". WTF?

Maybe he's not a bad person.  Yes he has some history of off-color remarks that both defines and restricts his act.  I don't know if he deserves a slap on the wrist, to lose his job, or for people to back him up.

I just can't find myself to have a lot of sympathy though.  If you say something moronic or hurtful in a very public forum, you should expect someone at some point to call you on it and for that to have consequences.

It's not like he only made a general remark.  He commented on a team and individual players.  It was stupid for him to go there whether it was heartfelt or for laughs.

Title: Re: Words
Post by: HaemishM on April 12, 2007, 09:10:39 AM
And I repeat, he said what he said, offensive and well, really stupid as it was. He's called a racist and had his show pulled thanks to advertisers getting scared shitless (and who scared them? The media).

And yet O'Reilly's constant barely-concealed racism is broadcast every night to great ratings. I can only assume his advertisers are complete cracker racist shitbags too. I need to find out who his advertisers are.

Title: Re: Words

Sol I'm not allowed to use the word "Ho" now, or just not in reference to non-white folks? I'm confused.

And how does this apply to use of the word, "Bitches?"

Yes, it might be the addition of "Nappy-headed" that made it the slur, however everyone seems focused on the word, "Ho," instead.

Title: Re: Words
Post by: Lantyssa on April 12, 2007, 10:06:23 AM
You're free to use whatever words you want.  Just don't be surprised if someone smacks you for it at some point.

He also did not stop at the "Nappy headed hos" comment.  He went on about the team and individual players at some length.  Had he left it at only that comment this whole thing might have been ignored, or at least not quite as much play as it did.

O'reilly, Michael Savage, there are plenty of people who say things they shouldn't.  Maybe one day it'll come back to bite them, too.  Who knows?  As a friend said though, the people with a problem this time did it the right way.  They got the advertisers to pull funding and that is ultimately what determines his fate.  If others could mount the same kind of campaign against other people's sponsors then more power to them.

Again, who gives a shit? The guy's job is to say spicy things to get listeners to sell advertising. Reminds me of an old Howard Stern commercial. The majority of Stern fans said they listened to "see what he'd say next." The majority of Stern haters said they listened to "see what he'd say next."

Where's the public outrage about the god hates fags guy, or any politician that votes against gay rights? Actions speak louder than words, and stifling someone's opinion, ESPECIALLY if you find it offensive is, well, offensive. This is America. Land of the free, home of the brave.

Opie and Anthony are doing pretty good, but then again, they're being simulcast on FM too. They're killing in some markets and doing shitty in some (Chicago for one. Chicago just doesn't like anything that isn't local).

Stern however, yeah, not so good. Piles of money for no FM simulcast and airtime on the least successful of the 2 satellite services.

Because gay is still something that society views as "icky" and "not in my world."  The gay rights activists also don't resort to whining like little bitches everytime someone uses the word fag (most often it would depend on context).  There is no equivalent Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson in the gay political community that I know of (one that cries foul regardless of origin and causes a massive media stir).  If there is, they aren't doing their job ;-)

This is America. Land of the free, home of the brave.

So... on his way to the meeting with Imus, the governor of NJ has a car accident and he's in critical but stable condition.  They did mention it in passing on CNN yesterday but mostly brushed it off, not even mentioning he was critical, just that he was in surgery.  Of course, who can blame them?  Nothing is more important than the Imus news.  I like how the cameraman kept zooming in to try and peek in the windows.  I was hoping he'd catch some woman sitting on the crapper or something and get sacked, arrested and put on the sex offender's database.

I like how people keep talking about Howard Stern when his audience is a tiny fraction of what it used to be and how he's doing nothing interesting.

Does the news just hate O&A or something? They've got more listeners than Howard right now, and were the first Satellite show to simulcast on FM.

It'll be interesting to see what Corzine has to say when he's out of the hospital. If nothing else, I suspect he'll start pushing stricter enforcement of seat-belt laws. He's lucky to be alive -- and given the rehab he's got ahead of him, I suspect he'll be furious at himself for not wearing one.

I've met a few people who had a serious accident and weren't wearing a seat-belt. Each and every one of them belts up even if they're just moving the car to the other side of the driveway.

Don't try and derail this important civil rights debate onto trivial matters like the well being of some minor politician in a backwater state. Don't you know that these iconic athletes have had their lives torn asunder? They're deeply emotionally scarred, and the taxpayer is going to have to shoulder the burden of expensive psychiatric care for the rest of their natural lives. Don Imus must pay in blood for his vicious and barbaric use of common hip-hop vernacular. It's not enough to simply sack him.

The term in "Nappy Headed Hoes," that is specifically racist is the "Nappy" portion.  The origins of that term stem from whites defining the tight curls in Black People's hair.  Since that was nearly unique to the race, they all knew what they were referring to when they said "Nappy Head."  The link Imus made is obvious.  They went on to joke about Spike Lee's movie and how they looked familiar to the girls in some of the sororities.

Their discussion basically was about how well these girls fit into the black stereotype visually.  If a black person had said these things, it would have been accepted by the black community.  Once a white person does it, it is not.  Mainly the issue comes from the fact that he's saying, in essence, "Hey my ancestors came up with these great stereotypes about your people, and look at just how well it describes you! Ha Ha!"

If a black person jokes about it, it becomes, "Ha, look at how well these girls fit into the White man's description of us!"

Now, at what point do we stop having to pay for what our ancestors did and joke with them together, I have no idea, but that is the difference that I can see.  I can see why Imus was smacked on this.  Lose his job?  That may be too much since it is his job to be mean.  Slapped for it, sure.

I really dislike these types of radio/TV shows anyway, so I'm obviously a bit biased.

I don't care that Imus lost his job.  If people get upset and demand that sponsors ditch his show and his bosses decide to sack him, well... ok.  However, they hide behind a psuedo moral wall by claiming it was the "right thing to do."  If those sponsors hadn't pulled out and Imus was still making them tons of money, I bet they would have supported him and merely apologised to people who were offended.  Maybe I'm just cynical.  It also bothers me a bit when people such as Al Sharpton and loads of others suck up hundreds of hours of media time pouncing on what ever they think might boost their career.  I just get the feeling it's a personal agenda to a large degree.  That might also be my cynical side coming out.  I'm not overly bothered by it all, though.  I've always thought that sometimes things we see as being unjust are responsible for other things evening out.  Sort of like how affirmative action, which can be unfair to some people, give a boost to other's who had little chance at the same opportunity.  Eventually, affirmative action schemes will become unnecessary... maybe they are already.  I'm not sure.

What does worry me, however, is the fools in government who will try and legislate due to the media circus.  This is the sort of thing that political opportunists will pounce on to make a name for themselves in spite of the damage to our constitutional freedoms it would cause.

As my girlfriend likes to say, I amuse myself. I often break out in laughter at a joke in my mind.

A few summers ago I was at a friend's campsite. I was holding a beer standing at a pot of salt potatoes. I stood there with a potato on a fork in one hand, a beer in the other. I broke out laughing at myself, being very Irish.

So beer-totin' potato monkey would suit me ok.

My ancestors on my Dad's side were tall guys who guarded the king of Denmark or something. And they all resembled Lee Marvin.

[EDIT]

I had the strange desire to look up Lee Marvin after typing that. Then ran across something weird. Apparently, Jim Jarmusch started a "secret society" called the "Sons of Lee Marvin" for Lee Marvin look-a-alikes. Members include Jim, Tom Waits, Thurston Moore, Iggy Pop, and Nick Cave.

(http://www.born-today.com/Today/pix/marvin_lee.jpg) (http://www.sequenza21.com/uploaded_images/allshookdown-0221-721737.jpg) (http://images.salon.com/march97/sharps/cave970319.gif)

Funny thing, I think it was the King of Denmark that gave title to Siward Armstrong, progenitor of the Armstrong Clan.  The myth is that the king fell off his horse during battle and Siward picked him up by his leg and put him back on there.  Fast track to earldom, apparently.
