Title: Give your LotRO elf an authentic sounding name!
Post by: Hutch on April 04, 2007, 11:17:37 AM
And here I thought "Elrondrizzt" would cover it  :rimshot:

Warcry article. (http://lotro.warcry.com/news/view/70269)

LotRO enthusiast discovers Silmarillion appendix (http://lotro.warcry.com/content/guides/naming)

I anticipate a great gnashing of teeth as retail-playing Tolkein nerds discover the truth about MMOGs.

They left off prefix Driz = munchkin wet dream and suffix z't- insufferable douchbag.

Yelling "Looking for Group" got enough panties in a wad during beta... I can only imagine what some of the names will do.

Damm it, I knew I should have played more in the beta.

Pre-order, here I come.

I anticipate a great gnashing of teeth as retail-playing Tolkein nerds discover the truth about MMOGs.

Its already happening.

This weeks forum drama led to the discovery that Turbine would not disallow non-lore names, that the policy only covered the usual;
racist, sexual, etc etc. More call for a stricter role play server(s) ensued along with the attendant comedy.

Heh, I am so glad that I semi-called this when the NDA dropped.  I still have "fond" memories of the hate tells I got when I accidentally said "LFG" in chat.  LFF, LFG, what's the difference, really?  I guess I am a lore blasphemer.

Yep. I remember the overlong, spite filled discussions over LFF/LFG in Bree the day it was brought up on the forums. Well, fuck those dudes. It's LFG. LFGLFGLFG!

I am almost tempted to get this game at release just to watch all the gnashing of teeth by lore fanboys when healheallol and ikilledtolkin start spamming yells of "lol emo fagg" and such.

In beta none of my usual char names was allowed. It was definitely annoying as I wasn't trying to enforce "FalcoN33r Biotch" or "Kiks Yourbutt".
After 1 hours of useless cursing the final ballot was something like Falconindrel vs. Elfalconalfin. I gave up and let the system randomize something for me.
It's ok to keep out the trash, but the lore-izer tool was a bit too strict for my taste.

A puzzle for kids!

Can you find

1) LOTRO fanboys, and
2) the crushing reality of the internet

in this photograph?

I was disappointed by the lack of a roleplay server in a game that screams for one. The internet is definitely going to crush this game, you simply can't leave ooc on due to the crushing stupidity of mmogtards, many programmed by WoW.

I was also disappointed all the cool elf names I came up with were rejected by the name filter. Aeia was called jibberish. Anything with several vowels strung together was. But they'll allow people to use lore names? Oboy.

I would want to make a character called Taradan (Stiff Man) just to see who would get it.

But then I'd have to play the game.

The presence of RP servers presumes an admission that something less than RP will go on elsewhere.  It might be an "all or nothing" effort to keep the fanboys quiet until after release, when the futility is obvious to everyone and the playerbase accepts that the best they can do is keep L33tgolas off a few servers.

PS:

Don't expect the Riders of Lohan to survive long.  I think the best you can hope for is to bring the server to its knees in the inevitable CS complaint storm, where each petition is a 32-page screed on "the honor of those who fell at Helms Deep."

Most of the diehard lore nerds gave up last winter. The few that are there now are just wanabes compared to the Simlilarion thumping zealots of the old MEO boards. They pretty much gave up an the game and declared it shit once they found out that Turbine was going to allow more than 6 people to the server and it was not going to be UO 3D set in Middle Earth. What is left of the wannabe loreites will be having shit fits today when 700K WoW'zers and other assorted kiddies come pouring in this afternoon with the public beta.

Level 8 Elf Hunter on the RP server named Boomheadshot. I love this game. And, continuing a tradition, I made a Hobbit named Cokkgobbler on Silverlode.

I followed this game about three dev teams ago (1999-2000ish) when it had permadeath and was completely insane in many other ways.  I may do this just for the hell of it- I love MMO launches.  Things always get lame later, but the first few months are always fun if you can find the not-yet-nerfed stupidly overpowered class.

I love the arguments that erupt when people say "LFG" on the OOC channel.

I thought Barrens chat was bad.  This is worse, because 75% of the time it's full of people arguing about how good/bad WoW is.

Saw Surferbarney yesterday.  Time to make Gidget the female dwarf.

There are no female dwarves. Or at least, there are just "Dwarves," and you can decide what is in your pants later, I guess. Maybe the women look like the men.

I never understand the RP moaners. I just turn off the global channels and have a decent time roleplaying. For the most part, I find that if I take the time to type the extra few words to be in character, most people in my group do the same (that has been true of other games as well). I don't get all angry when I see someone with a WoW-style name, though. Their name does not affect my enjoyment of the game unless I choose to let it.

Personally, I am just enjoying the look of the geography, and doing some exploring. My wife and I made it all of 50 meters into Angmar the other day (at level 15) before getting eaten by a fire drake. Apparently one does not simply walk into Angmar, either.

Well, I think it's more regret that one has to take steps to ignore/minimize a whole shitload of players just to get a somewhat immersive experience in an mmo.

In LotRO, upon logging in, I turned off global chats and player names. I'm experienced. In one weekend I think I ignored a half dozen people, though I didn't test if ignore would turn off the baby mozarts playing chopsticks in Combe.
