Guitar Hero 2 for the 360: A Review and a Necessary Fix

So. Guitar Hero 2 360. Yea. It's good. It's really good. But...

DANGER DANGER

GUITAR IS HAND-CRAMPING PILE OF DICK.

This thing is a piece of dog shit. Who was in charge here? What the fuck happened? It's really goddamn obvious too. After playing ONE SONG, it's noticeable. Even people who haven't played much notice it. The neck is too skinny in every dimension. Including the fourth. It's too short above the keys. Too short below the keys, and too short on back. It's painful. Not kidding. PAINFUL. So. What's a man to do if Guitar Hero is a necessity?

Needed some before pics. Also it's RJ-45, presumably.

It's not. We tried plugging in an RJ-45 jack. Didn't fit. Too big. It's RJ-35.

There's no such thing. Check your phone plug. Probably RJ-11/14/25.

Ok. It's a phone-y type jack. Standard phone cable. I thought that was 35.

So we'll stick with 35. Keep 'em guessing.

The RJ11 is for an addon -- an effects petal.

Nice writeup, schild. I'll probably mod it too, and if I come up with a better solution, I'll post pics.

Is the whammy bar issue you're talking about the one that I noticed where on long sustained notes, and I'm not touching the whammy bar at all, but I notice a little bit of movement on it? I noticed that yesterday, and saw it was kind of odd.

Neg. Many guitars are experiencing a lag during the first few waggles of the bar. It's annoying as hell.

Sky's Guitar Hero 2 (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=4508.msg285742#msg285742)

I really really want that guitar. If I had known Gibson was making 400 of them this year, Sky would still be gaming on an Athlon XP. And then Fostex doubles the tracks on the recording unit I have. Blerg.

I'll let you kids get back to duct-taping your toys :P

Been long time, but Samwise pointed me at the review I felt the need to respond given I feel differently about the guitar controller.

Having logged quite a few hours on the guitar last night with my copy of the game I find it as comfortable if not moreso than the PS2 versions.

The guitar is fine, IF you've played actual guitar before and have decent hand position.  The size of the neck of the guitar is irrelevant.

IF however, you have not, then yes, by all means do what you have to do in order for it to be comfortable.

As for the strap position, they did so because the old position made it more difficult for lefties as it wasn't evenly balanced.  They toed the line so that the guitar would be as comfortable as a righty or lefty.

The size of the start/select buttons is a bit dodgy as you're right, it is more difficult to pause the game...but at the same time, I desire to pause the game far less than the number of times it would accidentally pause me on the PS2 variety.  Is there a happy medium? Likely.

I'M DONE WITH THIS FUCKING CONTROLLER. I'M GOING TO BREAK THE SHIT OUT OF IT. RETURN IT TO GAMESTOP FOR A NEW COPY OF GUITAR HERO 2, COVER IT IN GASOLINE, AND BURN IT IN FRONT OF A CHURCH.

Red Octane admits some of the whammy bars are defective (http://kotaku.com/gaming/red-octane/red-octane-responds-to-defective-360-guitars-250451.php). Bring the guitars back to the retailer for an exchange.

I got to play this the other night.  I don't know what you all are talking about with the hand-cramping, but I suspect you're just holding it wrong.  lern2play

I think you just have really, really small hands.

The guitar that I starting learning on as a kid was a classical; it makes the Guitar Hero controller look like a child's toy.  (Which it is, in fact.)  But the neck width isn't the important thing if you've only got one string, just the spacing between frets (or buttons, in the case of the controller).  And the buttons are the same exact size between the PS2 and 360 versions, near as I can tell.

I'd be curious to see how people who are having all the problems are holding the thing when they play.

I would have to try it out myself but it seems like a thin neck would make it easier to use your thumb to play so you don't have to shift your hand around.

Unless you DO have large hands, it's not QUITE small enough to do this.  I have fairly average sized hands...on a normal acoustic guitar I have JUST enough reach that I can swing my thumb around to hit the e string and I can't quite use my thumb to play the green button.  Given the speed at which many of the songs end up movin, it's actually easier to simply shift your hand around then to try to contort your hand to hit that extra button.

i can't even count this as a mod. lame-tastic. you should just put the guts of the xbox360 one into the ps2 casing. modify the inside casing and use a drem-tool to bore out the connector and extra button slots and BAM. that is a mod. then you would just have an awesome wireless ps2 guitar for you xbox360. great success.

Naw, monkey is out of town this weekend. Next week sometime for sure. I need to take some carts to your place to test them out on your cab to see if they are dead or not. my cab plays them but they are acting funky.  :heartbreak:

I may have turf masters and ultimate 11 then too...so that could be fun.

you may need to buy a dremel tool...however you spell that.. they are pretty inexpensive so yeah... and make sure you have a soldering iron too... and solder... and beer.   :-P

1. Shooters in the US come out $30 and less almost every time.
2. Buying shooters brings more over, Cave compilation plz.
3. Shooters are awesome.
4. Raiden III, while not the best shooter around, is pretty fun.
5. It's a great game/genre for high score competition.

Heck, the PS2 guitar gave me serious carpel tunnel pain claw after maybe an hour or two of playing.

I will have to try the duct tape foam to the back of the neck method, because that's the one thing that has kept me from playing GH or GH2 that much.  What's odd is that my bass doesn't make my hand go into fits, so I'm wondering if it's the width of the neck, not the thickness that's the problem.

My method, though ghetto fixed the width and thickness for me.
