Title: Freddy vs Jason vs Ash
Post by: Shockeye on August 17, 2004, 10:42:58 AM
From the Hollywood Reporter (http://www.thehollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000613334) today:

The Vine: Freddy, Jason aren't dead yet

By Borys Kit
Even before 20th Century Fox's "Alien vs. Predator" captured the top spot at the boxoffice over the weekend, New Line Cinema began plotting a new face-off for its horror favorites, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, who had their own moment at the top of the boxoffice in August 2003 with "Freddy vs. Jason." Sources said the studio is in negotiations with director-producer Sam Raimi for a project titled "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash." In the proposed sequel, Freddy (the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" films) and Jason (the "Friday the 13th" pics) would go up against Ash, the cynical anti-hero survivor of Raimi's "Evil Dead" trilogy, which also includes "Army of Darkness." Bruce Campbell played the character in the trilogy and would play him again if the deal were to close. Although Raimi would not direct, he holds rights to the "Evil Dead" franchise. "Freddy vs. Jason" grossed more than $74 million, so even if a deal with Raimi can't be reached, New Line is determined to find a way to extend the franchise by introducing a new character or just pitting Freddy and Jason against each other one more time.

Yah, I heard of this a while ago.  This is apparently why he(Rami) hasn't signed on for any Spiderman pics beyond 3.  Although if he's not directing, I don't see how tied up he could be unless he's tagged on to produce.

A return of Ash would be movie goodness (hooray for Bruce Campbell!), although I'm not sure another director would handle his character as well as Rami.  I'd probably go see it just to support Campbell (I just read his biography, I now have even more respect for the guy).

An hour and a half of Ash running away from Freddy and Jason in utter terror , and sarky one liners of course, followed by 15 minutes of Ash kicking both thier asses but still managing to fuck it up some how would be true movie gold.

God, I'm such a nerd.

My understanding was that Raimi is going to do another Evil dead movie, and that this Freddy VS Jason VS Ash would be something different not involving raimi.  I hope both projects proceed.  Another evil dead could be fun, and although Freddy VS Jason was too dumb of a concept for me to watch, throw Ash in there and then the camp humor of it all just boils over into something wonderful.  Possibly wonderfully awful, but surely wonderful.

Freddy vs. Jason was just silly enough to be entertaining. Throwing Ash in there would be a geek's wet dream nightmare, as it would probably be too much sugar for a dime. But hey, I'd go see Bruce Campbell in just about anything.

If you haven't seen Bubba Ho-Tep, do so NOW. Bruce Campbell at his finest.

10 minutes of Necronomicon action bringing Jason to life
30 minutes of running around spouting one-liners
10 minutes of using the wrong phrase in the Necronomicon and bringing Freddy into the real world
30 minutes of running around
20 minutes of boomstick and chainsaw finale
sprinkle in 15 minutes of Embeth Davidtz for good measure

I was hoping he would use the original ending of AoD where Ash ends up in the future for some post-apocolyptic zombie-ass kicking. Could still happen I suppose.

Freddy vs jason actually was not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. It can be enjoyed along the same lines as alien vs predator it dosn't always make much sense but it is amusing enough diversion.

I would vastly prefer it if Hollywood stopped its self-referential circle jerk and actually produced some movies with new plots, new ideas, etc.

The Beverly Hillbillies rejects your suggestion and tells you to pay your $8 with the rest of the sheeple.

Bruce Campbell is great - I am glad to hear there is another flick in the making for him.

Got this (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2004-11/18/12.30.film) from SciFi Wire today.

Quote from: SciFi Wire
Spider-Man 2 director Sam Raimi and his Evil Dead producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell will remake the 1981 cult hit that launched their careers, Variety reported. Raimi wrote, directed and produced The Evil Dead, which tells the story of five friends holed up in a remote cabin who discover a Book of the Dead that raises demons.

Raimi will not direct the remake and is looking for a helmer to reinvent the franchise before a script is written, the trade paper reported. The movie will be produced by Ghost House Pictures, the joint venture of Raimi, Tapert and Senator International. The original movie spawned Evil Dead II (which was essentially a remake of the first film) and Army of Darkness, all of which starred Campbell as the demon-fighting Ash.

I saw a special screening of Bubba Hotep last year. I thought Bruce Campbell did an excellent job in that film, he was surprisingly subtle and even touching. BC himself introduced the show and took questions from the audience afterwards. He was eloquent, gracious, and hilarious. He was funnier on his feet than most professional comedians I've seen.

I'd love to see Ash again, but frankly, BC deserves better than to be lumped in with some Freddy vs. Jason mush. I've always thought the Coen brothers should write some kind of star vehicle for Bruce, like they did for Jeff Bridges in "The Big Lebowski".

I'd go see Freddy vs Jason vs Ash. I'd go see Bruce Campbell in anything though.

I once stood in line for 2 hours to get his autograph in his biography.
Despite it being extremely hot in the store, and the event being badly organized Bruce Campbell was incredibly nice. He shook my hand. Made small talk for a couple of minutes, and wrote whatever I wanted in my book. He did this with everybody in line. He was just an incredibly nice and funny guy in person. A far cry from the *scribbles name* "Next!" mentality I half expected.

As for the evil dead remake, I doubt I'd be interested unless BC was in it. He makes that series as far as I'm concerned. Hell I only watched Hercules and Zena because I liked when he guest starred.

Bruce Campbell is a wonderful human being and I love him.  In the most heterosexual sense possible.

I for one welcome our new chainsaw-wielding, funny one-liner spewing, undead-killing overloards... oh, wait, sorry, wrong forum.

As the article quoted above mentions, Evil Dead 2 was basically a remake of ED1 already. (And of one the most hilariously funny movies of all times)

So if there is an ED remake, that would make all the movies actually named Evil Dead Something either Evil Dead or a remake of it....very odd.

<geek type="Evil Dead">

Evil Dead 2 was a bona fide sequel, in my opinion.  It's just that the first third of the movie briefly retold the story of the previous film.  (Minus a lot of details, like most of the cast.)

The studio wanted a recap of the first film, figuring that too few people would have seen it, and Raimi ended up deciding that the best way to do this would be to just take the plot of the first movie, compress it to its most basic elements (guy and girlfriend find book, book awakens evil, guy kills girlfriend because she turns evil), and make it part of the second movie.

Everything after that point (with the hicks and the daughter of the archaeologist and the losing the hand) was brand new story.  If you were so inclined, you could probably splice together Evil Dead 1 and Evil Dead 2 (subtract the last ten minutes of the first movie and the first twenty of the second movie) and you'd have one more or less coherent story.

Army of Darkness is also known as "Evil Dead 3", incidentally, being a follow-up to Evil Dead 2.

Every story I hear about BC ends up with that he is the coolest guy you will ever meet and is very down to earth.  At a book signing here in town for his last book, the place was swamped with people and he couldn't meet everyone in line during his 6-8 appearance. He ended up staying until 2 in the morning so everyone could talk to him and apparently bought pizza for the last 20 or so who were still around.

I used to watch The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

And I liked it. (Cue sad music) Oddly enough, my dad liked it too.

Brisco County was an awesome show, right up to the final showdown with John Bly.  I'm still waiting for it to come out on DVD.

Overseas "Army of Darkness" was called "The Midevil Dead", a title I much prefer.
