Title: What does f13 mean?
Post by: Riggswolfe on March 13, 2007, 06:10:38 AM
Is it just a cool name or does it refer to something Schild likes? I'm just curious. I never thought about it until I typed f13 into google and some of the links were about airplanes and stuff.

As I remember it, it was some stupid shit that meant stuff only to Schild and Friends.

I assumed it was either a play on the function keys (F1, F12, etc) or short for "file 13".  Or just whatever got pounded into the keyboard when looking for a free domain name.

Ohhh............................... LORE!!!

We need the Lore behind F13

The "lore" is likely less interesting than what you could make up yourself.  At least that's how I remember it.

If so, it should have been PF13 for greater levels of geekiness.

But Ironwood and CmdrSlack have it right, all I remember about the explanation was that it was even less interesting than the function key thing.

Used to be the "System Restore" key.

I asked a year or two ago - I was directed to the function keys.

schild did not want users assigning functions to his site, so, no. Might make you feel all sexually excited about your minicomputer terminal, but it wouldn't serve the right purpose.

You PC folks know the f13 key as Print Screen.

I always thought it was just a clever joke since 'modern' machines do not have an f13 key. Way back when I used to tease ornery customers in my tech phone support job by asking them to find the f13 key, then clucking at them for having an outdated machine.

Bah. My new machine has an F13 key.

Does it call things "pig fuckers" and hate MMOGs?

Title: Re: What does f13 mean?

No, but whenever you press it your PC gives you a pop-up message telling you that whatever application you're running is for bourgeoisie pigs and suggests a more obscure japanese one.

OOOOhhhh... thats worth 5 points...was close to the heart...should have mentioned the SONY brand for a field goal but still a very good effort.

Hmm... I have no idea what you guys are talking about anymore.

Anyways, Mac keyboards go up to F16, and have for awhile.

PC's would too, but since there's a whole DOS legacy goin' on there, it has various/largely unused keys like Pause/Break and Scroll Lock.

Command+Shift+3 is Print Screen on Macs. It also works.

It's because all the other good f-number words were taken at the domain registry shoppe.
Really.

My F13 key just brings up chat about HBO shows I can't watch, and games I don't own the console for. I think I need to reprogram it to give me money instead.

The question is not "What does f13 mean?", but rather, "What does f13 mean to you ?"

F13 would have been a suitable Matrix Online guild name. If the game didn't suck.

Lets see if I remember this right from those first angst filled days of the site.

Schild went to a trade show and saw a keyboard that had a f13 key. He thought that was cool, and arriving home he registered the domain name. There the domain sat for a while. When Joe asked him to take over the community from waterthread.org he moved the forums from waterthread to f13.net. Then there was much gnashing of teeth and stuff.

There it is.

He got some stickies on his F12 key and called it his F13 key just cause he was filled with shame. Poor Schildy.

That explanation frightens me. It makes Schild years younger in my head than I previously thought. Of course it all depends on the definition of "for a while"  :-D

I'm surprised you can think at all with Schild in your head.  Does he boss you around?

He wasn't in my head all that long. I was soon distracted by ...oh shiney!

No, he just tells you that you love JRPGs, Sony, and that movies are better from Japan.

Shit, I just had a though, are you Japanese Schild?

Tebonas, judging by your avatar and utilizing my memories of a map of Europe, it would seem that you live in the Holy Roman Empire, or perhaps Mozambique.

That pretty much was the Holy Roman Empire.

You didn't think Rome was a part of it, did you? Check your History.

And other places.  If you saw the post which made him create the icon my response would make perfect sense.

Your lovely Red Panda icon doesn't let me despise you. Damn your Red Panda Icon!

Austria-Hungary was part of the Holy Roman empire. I don't accept the annexation by Germany in 1938 as lawful, though. And neither does the international community.
That difference is only important if you care about your sovereignty I guess.

Nah, we still owe them for that save during the Second Turkish siege of Vienna. Besides, they are a member of the EU now, how much more can you get invaded?
