Level 10 is where things get totally insane, with the sun enemy appearring. I use a dual analog controller, and yeah, I can't imagine trying to play this without one.
One interesting trick though - if you ram the purple rocks, you get damaged, but your weapon gets upgraded. It's generally easy to fully upgrade your weapon in the first stage by running into rocks, then by level 7 where it starts to get somewhat difficult, you've gotten enough health powerups to get back to full.
