Title: Cheap Laptops
Post by: Evangolis on March 04, 2007, 08:03:38 PM
Sorry, not what you want to read, just couldn't resist the title.  You've heard the story before, the idea to design $100 hand powered laptops for third world children.  Point is, the UI is getting press as being really innovative (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17402635/), having done away with the desktop idea for a more people-oriented metaphor, which makes sense if dealing with a furniture-optional culture.

Now I have to wonder how much one of these would cost in an unsubsidized version?  I wouldn't mind a couple hundred for a durable, hand cranked laptop I could use anywhere, even if it just did .txt documents.

I'm sorry. But that's a fucking desktop.

If it smells like duck and tastes like duck, it doesn't need to look like duck to be duck.

If you click on the little guy who is X'd out in the middle of the screen does it kill the user?

Cause then I could see why it's so cool.
