I should say that femme can also be applied to men, which would indicate they are quite "girly", although not necessarily "swishy" ala Carson. Also these terms can be applie to look as well as personality, so you can have a femme lesbian with a "butch" face/haircut, or a very straight and normal male who "looks femme".
