Title: Re: Subtle joke or Ad? You decide. Post by: Nebu on February 08, 2007, 08:43:20 AM Despite the joke... any hospital making a profit from gastric bypass should die in a fire.

There are much better and safer alternatives if you absolute require a surgical intervention. Title: Re: Subtle joke or Ad? You decide. Post by: bhodi on February 08, 2007, 12:22:59 PM Lap-Band? Why not profit off the fat fucks that will cost MORE money later in treatment of diabetes, heart failure, etc? Title: Re: Subtle joke or Ad? You decide. Post by: Nebu on February 08, 2007, 12:35:43 PM Why not profit off the fat fucks that will cost MORE money later in treatment of diabetes, heart failure, etc? This smells of bait. I'll just state that I think there are far too many cases where a gastric bypass procedure is unethical medicine in the first place. Adding a financial incentive to it pushes some buttons for me. Your opinion may vary. Title: Re: Subtle joke or Ad? You decide. I'll just state that I think there are far too many cases where a gastric bypass procedure is unethical medicine in the first place. Adding a financial incentive to it pushes some buttons for me. Your opinion may vary. It's not bait, it's an honest statement. Perhaps I *did* unintentionally word it as such. We're a capitalistic society. Hospitals provide a service, yes, but they also primarily are business interests. Gastric bypass is now becoming a crutch for couch potato fatasses that gorge themselves on supersize combo meals, rather than eating healthy and getting a bit of exercise. And if the hospital can make money off it to offset other costs of treatment of health problems CAUSED by obesity, so be it. GBP should be a last resort, rather than what it is rapidly becoming. Besides, I know two people that have had it done, and now two years later, they are gaining weight again for the simple fact they are STILL leading a sedentary lifestyle and eating crap foods. Title: Re: Subtle joke or Ad? You decide. Post by: Nebu on February 08, 2007, 01:19:47 PM I'm asserting that the practice of good medicine and the practice of good business aren't good bedfellows. "The customer is always right" isn't a mantra that any physician should practice, but is often one imposed upon them by upper administration. It's one of the largest contributing reasons in my decision to leave medicine.
For-profit medical care does provide some benefits to medicine as a whole, but it also provides far more detriments. Title: Re: Subtle joke or Ad? You decide.
