Title: Re: What ? Post by: Calantus on February 06, 2007, 07:58:04 AM I see this as validation on my theory that deafness is indeed a defect that greatly affects a person's life. :dead_horse:
The real question here though is what the hell was a deaf person doing on the train tracks long enough for "The train continued to sound its horn right up to the accident" to be something you could say to describe the incident. Surely, if you can't hear a train coming, the LAST place you want to be is on the train tracks. Or, if you had to be for some strange reason, you'd be looking both ways constantly. I'm going to mentally file this as a Darwin Award Nominee until some detail comes up that gives her a reason to be there beyond "stupidity". Title: Re: What ? Post by: Ironwood on February 06, 2007, 08:33:25 AM That was part of my disbelief also. I would honestly say that this sounds like a suicide.
Even a deaf person can FEEL a train coming along tracks. I know. Title: Re: What ? Post by: Dren on February 06, 2007, 08:59:14 AM That was part of my disbelief also. I would honestly say that this sounds like a suicide. Even a deaf person can FEEL a train coming along tracks. I know. I'd add that they would especially FEEL it coming. Enhanced other senses thingy... I was thinking suicide too as I read it. Title: Re: What ? Post by: tazelbain on February 06, 2007, 09:00:51 AM Man, I was thinking "this deaf chick is cute."
Title: Re: What ? Post by: Nebu on February 06, 2007, 09:01:02 AM You may be right about the suicide, but keep in mind that deaf people are as capable of being inattentive as the hearing.
Title: Re: What ? Post by: Signe on February 06, 2007, 09:03:19 AM When I was small, we used to sit on a neighbour's wall and watch the trains go past. We could feel the train approaching before we could even see it. If it was an accident, it was awfully careless. :?

WHAT... THE... FUCK?? Title: Re: What ? Post by: Merusk on February 06, 2007, 09:58:57 AM The Deaf have their own fucking beauty queens now? WHAT... THE... FUCK?? If I were blind I'd be lobbying. Post by: Calantus on February 06, 2007, 03:32:57 PM Quote "She was a beautiful, bright, young deaf woman," said Bugen. One of these things is not true. Text messaging while walking down the train tracks... yes, definitely deserves a Darwin Award. You don't need to be on the train tracks when following them. This story reminds me of all the idiotic teenagers who walk down the middle of the road where I live. A small part of me always likes to point out that if I hit them it would be totally their fault, and theraputic besides. But then another part reminds me that the law would see it differently and I have to slow down to a crawl while they move out of the way. Title: Re: What ? Post by: Samwise on February 06, 2007, 08:31:55 PM She wasn't walking quite ON the tracks, just right next to them. Not quite as obviously dumb as walking down the middle. Still something that if you were to think about it for a moment you would realize was not at all a good thing to do while distracting yourself.

Title: Re: What ? Post by: Ironwood on February 07, 2007, 01:18:59 AM Alas, Sam, I don't agree with you. If you're close enough to the tracks that a cow-catcher will get you, you ought to fucking know better.
A speeding train will literally suck you in to it's wake with that little distance. Alas, I thought this was tragic and silly at first, but now it turns out it's just stupid and silly. Ban Mobile Phones, kthx. Title: Re: What ? Post by: penfold on February 07, 2007, 02:06:47 AM I worked at the RNID and i can honestly say I've never seen so many hot chicks in one building. Not all were Deaf, but most were gorgeous. Something about Charities that attract good looking women i think. Next time I'm single I will have to learn BSL and take up volunteer work.
Title: Re: What ? Post by: Ironwood on February 07, 2007, 02:37:27 AM If my ears continue deteriorating, I'll end up doing IT support for a deaf charity/organisation.
I may even be happier that way. Especially if hot chicks are involved. :-D Title: Re: What ? Tho I am not sure if Sky is joking now or if he doesn't understand me at all. :| Title: Re: What ? Post by: Signe on February 07, 2007, 07:14:18 AM You do know that, even if we don't understand you, we love you anyway. Really.

Chairity workers tend to be bored housewives or retired people. Affluent families are the ones who can afford to have one member be the 'bored house-spouse.' Affluent people also tend to be more fit-looking, for whatever reason you want to ascribe to it. (Personal trainer, more time, cosmetic surgery..) That'd explain at least a portion of the greater % of attrictiveness. Title: Re: What ? RNID was one of the only jobs where I actually felt I've done something worthwhile at the end of the day (I worked in a section that helped the Deaf get employment, and provided assesements for Deaf employees and companies that employed them), unlike the global megabank where I am, where all i do is contribute to their multi-billion euro profit. Shame the pay was shit though, I couldnt even afford to live in London on the wages they paid. Title: Re: What ? Title: Re: What ? Post by: Kenrick on February 08, 2007, 05:58:44 AM Wow, old news...
This actually happened about a mile north of my apartment. I live about a quarter mile from the tracks, and I remember that afternoon noticing that I hadn't heard a train for a few hours, which is really rare. Later when I saw the news on TV, I put 2 and 2 together. It was definitely an entirely bizarre incident. If I'm deaf, the last thing I want to do is walk along a train track with my back to oncoming traffic. I think that investigators found a pda/blackberry type device near the body, and that they speculated she may have been "texting" and not really paying attention to her surroundings, etc. In any case, I guess it was Darwin at work... which is a shame, because it sounds like she was a great gal. And cute. Title: Re: What ? Post by: Llava on February 08, 2007, 08:41:59 AM it sounds like she was a great gal Quote A Massachusetts-born Texan, who liked to quote "Don't mess with Texas," Refuted.
