SlayerK and Velorath brought up the idea of getting a group together and entering an MMO that: a) we have never played, or b) we have not played in awhile.  Who would be interested in this, and what games seem interesting enough to play?

I was thinking of:

Neocron
Pro: Vibrant economy, PvP factions are interesting, future (Guns 4tW!), and arguably some of the bestest crafting out there.  Also uses a skill system: I am still avoiding DIKU elements as much as possible.  This is my top pick.
Con: Billing system leaves much to be desired.  Humongous world may throw off the non explorers.  Not sure if many F13'rs would have any interest in this game.

Asherons Call (PvE server)
Pro: Lots of quests.  LOTS OF QUESTS.  Varied skills and interesting combat.  LOTS of lore and places to explore.
Con:  It is too easy for people to fall into the level grind.  Level disparity is pretty high.

Any other suggestions?  Thoughts?  Who would want to join us?

I'd hit Neocron, but the last time I played it (which was admittedly, years ago) it sucked.

I honestly think that WoW on one of the new servers might be fun.  If we had 5 regular players, we could see most of the content.  CoH/CoV is also a possibility, but so many people have been there, done that.

I have a sub to both CoX and WoW.  I don't like Neocron/2 because of it's shootiness and because they passed on the bugs from 1 to 2 and never fixed them.  I haven't been interested in Asheron's Call in years although it was fun way back in the olden times.  Now it's just ugly.  Geez, I can't think of any thing else, though.  Sorry!  As far as CoX is concerned, I9 will be out in the spring with inventing and other new stuff.  We could also always give it a go on the test server when it's uploaded.  Regarding WoW, we could all be girly Blood Elves paladins and dance naked in town to annoy people.  So many possibilities, such limited interest!   :-)

Since I'm already subbed to CoX, that'd be my vote.  That said, I have limited time to play until March.

Fortunately, you're not going to decide based on my input, so it's really a moot point, I guess.   :-D

I'd rather play EQ2 with a balanced group, and not only do I not like the game, but no one would talk, so it would be double the suck.

WoW wishs they had 30 million registered players, I guess they need to figure out how to "give a big influence".

In China it's (relatively) easy to get that many registered accounts when the game is free to play. On the other hand Perfect World has less than half the number of peak concurrent users than WoW in China has.

I am allready subbed to COX and WOW. I am playing COX. There are some defender builds that are too fun. That said i would go along with any thing within reason.

I would personally do this only for DAoC or Eve.

I would do DAoC for however long the trial lets you play.

Yeah, that same server thing has always been one of our more interesting challenges to overcome in any game.

So reroll.  Character creation is like 90% of the game anyway.  Might be fun to build a supergroup from the ground up. 

OK, heres my take on servers. Freedom is the most popular, and to me lags the most. Virtue is the next most popular and I do not notice any lag. I have no issues with any other server. All in my opinion and my connection. Your milage may vary. I would post my beloved tank mage builds but really teams are best when they are varied. Having said that friends don't let friends roll up blasters. I know, I played back in the day of city of blaster but they are very hard to play now. If COV is an option mastermind is truly easy mode and corrupter's play easy as well. Brutes are fun if melee is your thing. But hero's group better. It just plays like that...solo mostly? play a villain... group mostly? hero's will be stronger.

I thought the idear was to play a game a lot of us aren't already playing?

Surely there's *some* game out there we could swallow for 2-3 weeks that none of us has played for more than a couple of hours?

Only downside is that they are like 260 days into this telling already... and added levels.  The levels chased me away after 1 month.

The Reserves program was supposed to end in March. I don't know if that's still true.

If you guys decide to play PS, I'd like to jump in too. My main is on Markov, but I've got a lower level character on Emerald too. Both are NC. Wouldn't mind starting a new character on another side though.

That's why I proposed DAoC. Playing alone may be a nightmare, but with an organized group you can have some fun and level very fast. Within few hours you could be high level enough to go in a decent BG and do some PvP.

DAoC is probably the game where playing right away in a group of 5-10 people can be fun, while alone it's out of question. You can do a lot and quickly with a minimal organization.

I've been messing around on WoW the last couple of days, and strangly I have enjoyed it (on one of the RP PVP servers).  It's....cute (?!?), really.  Had some fun, and like a good fungus, it's growing on me.  Not too high that rerolling a toon on another server wouldn't bother me.

I'd go for a new server WoW.

Holy flashback, Batman! I played version 2 of this game, what seems like many, many years ago. In reality, it was around 2000 or so, give or take a year. I remember being in the beta for version 3, but lost interest with it and never bothered checking back on it. It was a pretty small community back then, maybe 30-50 people online at peak, so I'd kind of be interested to check it out and see if I can remember anyone, if anyone still plays from back then.

I'm not actually going to participate in anything but I'll state opinions anyways.

DAOC -  People are still willing to pay for that?  Esp with SB free?  No thanks.

SB - The barrier to entry is pretty damn high, plus its so ghetto, also it still doesn't run well.

AC1 - ...

CoX - So many people are already playing it wouldn't be an "invasion" at all.  Its a shame that f13'ers are so spread out in this one..

WoW - Oh come on, if I thought f13 could put together a hard core tiny guild w/ only the goal of fielding a team or two for serious arena play.  I'd be down, but when it comes to WoW anyone who isn't playing now should have at least 3 servers that they know RL friends wanting them to roll on,  I know I had like 5 at last count.

GW - Too bad most people think the game sucks.  Also it really wouldn't be an invasion because to make a splash in GW you better be ready to take things seriously which isn't this groups strong suit imo.

EvE - Always a good idea, a newbie invasion with at least 8 people is always fun.  Also more people should try EvE, that is always my opinion.

PS - Making a squad and playing PS sounds like fun but again I never get the feeling this is the right community to try to form this from, this would be the one game I'd re-download and play though if it was picked.

I wish I could think of a free azn game worth suggesting but atm there really isn't one.  Unless we wanted to bot some characters up in Silk Road then raid caravans that is pretty cool and it costs you nothing.

I don't think anyone has any intention to make any sort of "splash" if we play anything at all.

I'm not going to participate either, but I'd suggest GW.

1) You don't have to worry about which servers you're all playing on, and trying to coax people into moving with you.

2) It's not a game with a huge grind, nor does it require a lot of pre-planning. You guys could all level or get in shape fairly quickly, and just form pvp squads.

3) No subs

Downsides: Agreeing on or getting people to play certain expansions.

Out of any DIKU this is the one I would be most likely to sign up for.  I never did play EQ (well, a little, but not for long) and would be intereseted to see what the fuss was about.

I am up for original EQ. I tried it the other day and beside the fact that they revamped the graphics here and there, it has tons of charm.

Hmmm, no offence, but after the Vanguard thing your game reviews are kinda on probation for me.

Voyage Century is not THAT good. It's just something pretty new and somewhat surprising. Definitely worth a download, an install and 30 minutes of everyone time.

I've been playing original EQ (with one of my original chars no less) since July, and having a blast to be honest. Good raiding guild that was basically right at where I was when I left progression wise (poTime in Planes of Power), and we've pushed through 3 more expansions worth of content.

That being said, I still have a pretty nice Planetside character list--BR25 NC on west coast server, and BR19 TR on east coast, and would try to play with you guys if the timing was right with my work and eq stuff.

I came very close to trying PS; I'd be in for that or CoX.

I'd play PS. Mebbe even old-school EQ. Station Pass could cover all that and more. I dunno about skipping levels 1-24, though, that was fun imo. Crushbone, Lesser Fay. Then again, I hate the raiding game, and anything Velious+.

@Straz:  The problem with GW is, if you want to pvp and not get your teeth kicked right the fuck down your throat.  You better be prepared to work at it.  F13'ers and working at things just dont go hand in hand in my mind.  So yeah replace splash with not being total scrubs who get owned 24/7 or something..

GW: Or have a group that is mature enough that when you do get your teeth kicked in (It's going happen, a lot, even if you practice) that people don't through a fit.  They changed the ladder recently.  I think it makes it less likely "for fun" teams will fight competitive teams.

I would suggest EVE for those same reasons, minus the downside point.  I would happily roll up a new combat pilot so we could all be newbie dicks and get ourselves and other people killed a lot.  Of course, several of us are actual EVE players so it would not really and truly fit the bill of what Ched is trying to do.

Of course, I've never tried PS or SB, so those are options.  I guess.  Maybe Neocron, I don't know anything about it so ++.  I'm sick of WoW even though I only played for the first six months after launch.  I think I might have a seizure if I see or hear EQ... which is one reason Vanguard made me ill.

Rather than some stank-ass free MOGs, we might as well try Phantasy Star Universe or D2LOD.  If PSU can use the net connection in a PS3 then I would actually buy it.

Having played some more WoW, all I can say is...

If you're going to pay someone or play any game, may as well pay for/play a game that works.


Alternatively, we could all roll entertainers once pub/chapter/patch 5 on SWG comes out and ninja dancers in hawtpants using the 10 day trial.

Eve does have a sub. If GW, I suggest Factions because a) you can find it cheap; b) it has low pressure PvP to dink around in.

We set a time.  Someone with good system runs a server.  We all log in to it and teamspeak.  For a couple hours, we chit-chat and build stuff.  Nothing to buy.

Funny you guys mention PS.  A bunch of friends and I took a night off lastweek to play, and we had a blast.  I am a damn pylon in FPS games, and ended the night with something like 7 kills/50 deaths....but it was a lot of fun, so I didn't really notice. Plus you do have options if you lack pure FPS skills (support, combat engineering, stealth, vehicles, etc.)/  My buddies were suprised that it didn't completely suck.

PS is definitely at its best with high-populations and good strategy.  From what I saw, there was always at least two continents with some good sized battles going on at all times (Emerald Server).

PS is still running their "Reserves" program, so you can download and play for free (up to Battle Rank 6), patch in about 15-30 mintues and go at it.  Battle Rank 6 isn't that much of a crutch either, as you can respec into most equipment and skills without penalty for the week or so. After that, you can still respec but you have to wait a day or so.

I would be definitely interested in joining "Bat Country" if PS was involved.

Like last year or so I was able to log in for some reason. I had my 65 rogue sitting in Northern Ro. I went to backstab a lvl 1 rat. Not only did I not ASSASSINATE it for 30000 damage, but I only, somehow, hit for about 120. Where's my 1000+ backstab hits?

Odd timing.  At the suggestion of the roomie, I finally tried Planetside yesterday.  NC on Emerald.  Vanu on the other two, right now, but likely Markov will become a Terran or go unplayed.

I did see a Schild pass by while a bunch of us were filling several galaxies.  I figured it would be too weird a coincidence to be our Schildy though.

The reserves program is still in place.

I find that Planetside is good for a couple weeks or even up to two months, then it stops being fun. Six months later, it's fun again, as fun as if you never played it.

What exactly is the Planetside Reserves thing anyway? Because, you know, their fucking webpage doesn't tell you what it is besides "DOWNLAOD NOW!" and their FAQ link goes to the Planetside news archives, which is kinda useless unless you want to search.

I do have a GW account though.

It's like, free for a period except you can't get past mid levels. Of course, levels in that game mean you unlock more stuff, not that you're stronger or have more HP. I think it gives you enough to do one thing, but you can't swap out from say tanker to stealther or whatever.

I had an account there once. Can you reserve if you've had an account there? Or is it only for new players? My thoughts on the game back then were that it would have actually been ok for free, but not worth a subscription fee.

If we do decide on planetside, I have a highly qualified gal pilot at our beck and call (remember, i was a real life low level pilot, so get your sick bags out!).

Some of the most fun in Planetside was a coordinated gal drop on an unsuspecting tower or base :)

West coast server (can't remember name)/NC , and of course I can always create a newbie if we pick a diff server/faction.

Neocron is on the backburner until the new expansion; until the billing system is fixed I will not encourage people to go there (should be fixed with new expansion roll out).  EQ is on deck for possible future invasion, depending on how well this lil' experiment does.

Downloaded and patched, what is the ts address again and what time should I expect people to show up?

Three hours of patching, 30 minutes to go.  Any suggestions for building a decent reserves character?  Probably my best work in PvP was as a scout in SB, if that helps give direction.

How good are you with vehicles?

If you are just going to F-around in PS, have everyone take Armor 2 and Engy and just rotate the tank driver. I highly encourage Emerald since Markov is mostly dead in comparison.

Better than I am with guns, based on three hours today.  Although I did get a couple kills, I think, mostly guys facing west while I was on the east.
