Title: Can someone from the UK tell me if this is true?

Basically, they are saying the PS3 in the UK costs 425 pounds which translates to $838. Is this right? If so that's crazy and tells me Sony is gonna have a very small market in the UK.

425 Pounds are currently 642 Euro, so it would be about 40 Euro more expensive than the suggested retail price in continental europe which is Eur 599 for the 60 GB model (the only one that will be released in the EU at launch).

This is in line with UK pricing which is usually 10% above continental europe on everything.

Microsoft are doing the 1:1 conversion rate on Vista too. Bill was questioned why 99USD = 99 GBP when exchange rate is 1.9 or so and mumbled something about that he doesnt keep up with exchange rates,

Supposedly, UK retailers are saying there's still a big demand, especially for the 60 gig version (we'll see about that).

Also, just for comparison, the 360 is $550 (£280). Gamers are buying that as well.

It's true - and you can write up this story about a great many things without even bothering to check prices. Living in the UK is 'expensive' thanks to the relative strength of the pound over the last fifteen years since Black Wednesday. Retail prices have not adapted much. However, individual buying power is broadly still in line with where it was because UK wages have not taken a significant hit despite the relative appreciation of the pound, so British people aren't suffering much; we just get to buy stuff overseas really really cheap.

UK ps3 'demand' is focussed on the 60gb version because they aren't selling the smaller box in the UK.

What I've read is that the 20GB is not being sold (at least not yet) because 60 gig is more in demand. Link (http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=264).

Heh. This is one of those chicken or the egg things, I guess.

Hmm, I guess the price isn't stopping some people.

Advance orders for Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console have broken all records, with high street stalwart Woolworths revealing it has been taking one order every 20 seconds during the past week.

Euros also get one of the best launch lists in gaming history. So maybe it shouldn't be surprising.

[EDIT] Also, they get James Bond instead of Ricky Bobby.

What's wrong with Ricky Bobby?  When I think of Ricky Bobby, I think of Jesus.  But the long-haired Jesus, because that says, "I like to party", and y'know, I like to party!  I also like to think of Jesus rocking out with Lynard Skynard, that'd be my favorite Jesus.

Ricky grew on me after the first viewing (like Anchorman and Napoleon Dynamite), but c'mon.....Bond. And especially Eva Green. I'd take that over Nascar anyday.

I haven't actually seen Casino Royale yet, because, well, that'd require actually setting foot in a theater, which is something I won't do.  It's on my shortlist (with The Departed, coming out tomorrow! ), though.

But yeah, Ricky Bobby isn't a perfect movie, but man, it's got some nuggets of gold hidden in there.  John C. Reilly stole the fucking show from both Cohen and Farrell IMO.

Yeah, Reilly is the man. Steals the show from almost everyone actually. :)

And doesn't get enough leads (have you seen Criminal?).

That price includes a 17.5% sales tax (VAT.) Removing that brings the price to ~$713. This still isn't exactly cheap, but it's not quite as far off the US price.

So...

Any of you Euros get one of these yet?  :-)

I'm kind of surprised how well it has sold (supposedly). Considering the price, no 20gb model (yet at least), and the emulation differences...

The numbers are 165k in the UK (only second to the PSP's 185k), which is more than twice the 360, and 60k more than the Wii (105k), which had the previous console launch record. 550k for the entire Euro launch apparently. Resistance and Motorstorm seem to be the big game sellers as well.

They had a big launch in the US and Japan too.  The problem for them seems to be sustaining the sales after launch.

Not really similar launches in US and Japan, relatively speaking. Not bad, but not what was expected. While in the UK the PS3 had a record launch for any console, including the PS1 and PS2.

Not that I disagree with your other point though. It could slow down, sure. But that's a great start for something at that price, and only in the 60gig configuration.
