So my main is a cow shaman on a PVP server, but I also have a human pally alt on an RP server, just to change things up a bit.  While everyone on the PVP server is the same breed of loltard regardless of character race, it's understandably quite different on the RP server.

So let me just say here, everyone roleplaying a dwarf or night elf can go die in a motherfucking brothel fire.

Shove your shitty faux-Scottish accent up your ass, dwarves.  Quit saying "Ach!" in every third sentence.  Quit telling me about your motherfucking ale.  And quit doing it in general chat, you god damned faggots.  The sort of fucking fruit who indulges in this just wishes he could drink more than two beers without throwing up.

And night elves.  God damn I hate night elves.  Seriously, every single person with a night elf toon on an RP server is a complete homo.  If it starts to rain, some palmfucking catass night elf will start yammering in chat about the wonder of nature.  If there's a low level female toon running around Goldshire, some skeezy night elf 20 levels higher and with nothing better to do will be blathering and blathering away at her like a sexually stunted 32-year old trying to pick up high school chicks.

I really hate these two races, or rather the people playing them.  They're all a bunch of Salvatore-reading mangina cyberwhore pole-smoking shitbags.  I'll say it again:  Roleplaying is like watching Star Trek.  When done well, it's a fun nerdy guilty pleasure.  But putting up with the legion of degenerates in pointy plastic ears who have made a lifestyle out of it can try anyone's patience.

Honestly, the game's open to anyone, even those who really suck at roleplaying.  And while a RP server will have less retards, it still has some.  Plus, the periodic visitors whenever some other server is down, looking to stir up trouble.  It all happens on the general and LFG chat channels, too.  Just turn them off.

Closest I came to a good RP experience in WoW was a couple months ago when a friend decided to set up a guild and set up a story arc; we were the crew of a ship, lost our lives to some curse and became undeads, and we were looking for replacement bodies or to end the curse (eventually to be accomplished by re-rolling BE's come the expansion).  Unfortunately, not everyone who we recruited was good at tying themselves into that background, or even roleplaying that well, and eventually we all lost interest; keeping the story on track and pushing it forward was becoming difficult.  Too bad; we were using Lore to speak Thelassian and had the whole guild structured around the whole ship crew idea.

Just ask the people roleplaying in General how they can speak to everyone in a zone at once.

Amen. I'm saddened that the expansion is going to taint my precious ugly horde with these fuckers. What worse, is they'll all wanna play evil elves or some such, which can me only one thing: wannabe drow. And we all know what pops up when you have wanna be fucking drow, thousands of Drizzt clones.

I've had pretty good luck with RP servers, sure there is still a wide range of players out there with varying degrees of RP proficiency, but I've met some good folks and had a lot of good RP experiences. And yes, one of my characters is a Night Elf  :-o

And I tend to like RPing Dwarves, though I don't see too many of them. They tend to lighten things up a bit, as one pitfall of even the best RPers is a tendency to get overserious at times. A good drunk Dwarf can really set a festive mood.

The only reason I rolled a N.E. on one of my toons was so I could play a druid... But I agree the race sucks.  Wish I could be a gnome druid.   :crying_panda:

I quite like dwarves - the only alliance race I enjoy.

Look unlike EQ/ EQ2 - which in my experience have strong player communities with mature conduct - we know this is possibly WoW's single achilles heel.  Players in this game suck so fucking bad I cannot stand it sometimes.  It's my only real gripe about this game.  Currently, I have turned off guild chat - good guild - but a good guild in a game like wow still has a an overflowing stock of ... jerks.

But they are kids - the stuff they say - you know.  One kid said he wished another would get cancer.  And so on.  As adults we exposed to this child banter full force.  They are just kids - problem is - we are adults.  Yes, we have adult morons too - but their style is very different.

It's the one reason I am tempted to try Vanguard.  WoW's player community can be crushing sometimes. 

I remember in EQ sometimes there would be "open raids" where it was a pug group of literally 40 guys scheduled in advance.  You would NEVER do that in this game.  It would be a clusterfuck of ineffable proportions.

Strange question, but how "mature" was EQ's server population when the game first came out, and how much of this would also be a reflection of the times, where MMOGS were pretty much limited to UA, and most of the people playing them in the early days of EQ / AC were still something of your computer / roleplay geek, rather then the Bnet Kiddies / Leet FPS players getting into MMOGS nowadays.

I can't stand gnomes.  I started a human mage because I couldn't take being a smug-ass shorty.  And I think humans are meh, but there are no nelf or dwarf mages.

I hated the horde for role playing even more than the alliance...I have alts on RP servers when I feel like playing with a more goofy and less serious crowd, and I wanted to strangle every Rastafarian troll or Tauren who uses the word "Earthmother", or every "ME THOK SMASH GOOD" Orc. The undead were equally hacky but more generically emo.

I am SO going to be a Blood Elf Paladin!  And make jewelry.  AND DANCE!  I hope we get that cute little flip when we jump, too.  OMG.  Don't even TRY to torment me.  I will SO make you sorry.

I'm not really having issues with that kind of thing.  Trolls in Warcraft speak like that, or they're supposed to.  RPers are going to do that, come hell or high water; that's practically all they CAN do in a game as constrained as WoW.  Dwarves talk with scottish accents, Orcs are going to be all ORC SMASH,  Night Elves all say "By the grace of Elune" every twenty-seven seconds, et cetera.  Big deal.  I don't see the complaint.  It's kind of cheesy, but I'll gladly take "Verily we doth camp this spawn, in His Majesty's Name" over "lol Chuk Noris jokes ruuuel lolol" any day.  Is it just that you don't like to see people play generic characters, or that you don't like the way Blizzard designed the characters, or what?

I don't understand what the problem is here.  Are you hating RPing in general (in which case, yeah, what are you doing on these servers?), or just claiming that the RPing in WoW isn't done to an acceptable level?  Because if you're expecting these guys to be rifling off epic sagas of heroism and valor just kind of off the top of their heads, or whatever, then I've got to know what game you were playing before where that kind of thing was common.  As far as I've seen, RPing in WoW is like RPing in any other context, from tabletop to MMO: mostly it's just a bunch of guys trying to pretend they're knights or whatever.  It's a half step up from running around a playground pretending to be Superman.  They're not trained actors or writers, they don't have much control over the setting, they're not going to put together something that's very entertaining to you, unless you're playing along (and I suspect that most of us aren't).  Is there some treasure trove of RPing somewhere that's actually entertaining to spectators, that everyone else is comparing WoW to, or what?

I have several dwarf and Night Elf toons on an RP server. Also a few humans. No gnomes, strangely. The closest I come to RPing is for my dwarf to act like an idiot. But I think that's just me. :)

Admittedly, the guild I'm on is full of people who tend to be 30+, or their kids (kids are given special titles so we know when not to say "FUCK!" over TS or party chat). We raid exactly once a week, with more thought towards having fun than skill or speed. (In fact, a few of our members raid the same dungeon with a more 'hardcore' group with alts -- they're shocked at how fast they rip through the content comparatively. But they have better gear, a better mix, and more skilled players. And apparently people get pissy on wipes. We don't give a shit....)

Our RP is pretty limited. And I tend to avoid the RP hangouts in any case. I joined the server because I figured there'd be less counterstrike-wannabes and fucktards. That's more or less been the case.

This gives me a much better appreciation for why you enjoy the game so much.  If I were to find a group of quality folks (as you have), I'd probably have had a much more enjoyable experience with WoW.  Instead, the general chat channel has left me scarred for life.

Ok, I just like it because it gives me something to do while waiting.  Yes, I jump around a lot.

General chat is not an option for me.  I never ever ever ever have it on.

I am in the same type of guild.  Most are 30+ unless their kids are in too.  One family consists of a mother, father, and two daughters.  They can, and usually do, play all at once.  We have several couples that play.  One guy just turned 40.  No guild drama and very casual when it comes to instances.  Wipes are expected and joked about.

Yeah, I've been in bad guilds in WoW too.  I recognized this and left.  It took two changes to find this guild and I'll stick with them through this game and maybe beyond if possible.

General chat wasn't an option for me until I learned that the people who live there are easily riled.  I ended up enjoying it because I'm cleverer by half than most of them (which really isn't saying much) and it's a lot of fun giving them a hard time.

Someone once posted fake patch notes in which night elves were given an XP penalty each time they jumped. :) When I'm bored (normally while waiting for buffs on our weekly raid) I like to turn on Cheetah and run in circles, then feign death. Then do the train noise. Only gnomes and dwarves get away with crap like that.

I also like to run into newb areas, use Eyes of the Beast, and menace players. Admittedly, that's getting harder to do, but it's fun scattering the new players when a level 60 cat materializes next to them. Mostly I just run it around helping out new players who got in over their heads learning how aggro works.

Mostly I just work on alts or PvP. My rogue's up to 22 and I'm having a blast. I went and tried battlegrounds with it and recalled why any bracket sucks if you're in the lower five levels. The insane twinage in the 20-29 groups doesn't help that. I had some level 29 crit me for more health than I had.

Actually, the one character I move around the most on is my NE rogue.  I am constantly moving around in different combinations of moves because I'm doing that constantly in combat.  I find it helps with all those wait times and keeps me intune with my controls.  That's one reason I like playing my rogue more than any other class right now.  I am constantly moving during combat and have many things to use in different situations.

Well that, and the fact that I'm only like one of two rogues in our entire guild.

I like my rogue just for the ability to sap people. Just, in general. It's fun to stealth up to them, hit them on the head, then stealth away. I'm a simple man.

Improved Sap is the awesome. In the BG's I was trying, it was about all I could do -- I'd sneak up to a level 29 (often a rogue, having tried to ninja-cap an unguarded flag) and sap him, then scream for help. Bought me thirty seconds for someone to get there, since lord knows I wasn't killing him.

Yup... my old main is a 60 rogue I stopped playing a looong while ago. He's specced almost full subtlety, has the Darkmantle boots [+8 stealth], the Catseye Goggles [+2 stealth detection], the stealth detection talent, improved sap and full Master of Deception.

Since my gear is pretty bad, pretty much the only thing I do in BGs is to sap enemy rogues, repeatedly (it unstealths them and they HATE it). In one AV I got some rogues so PO'd at me, about two-three of them would gank me whenever they caught me out of stealth. :P

The single word that says alliance RPers have nothing to complain about. Hearing a troll end every goddamn sentence with mon makes me want to rip their ears off.

Although, I think my hatred for RP servers stems from the fact that the unwashed masses actually try to talk to me there. In a PVP server you can group up with someone and "hi" will be the most actual conversation you have after the group is formed. I like this. The average WoW player is not worth talking to and I'm too nice to tell them to STFU or ignore them. Plus it is much easier to tell when someone is saying something worthless when they just say it straight out. The faster I can tune out the words coming out of your mouth that are not relevant to the game, the less painful the experience becomes.

My favorite RP story from WoW is a pirate themed guild that had a couple of its members argue in-character with a GM over them roofsniping people.

I joined an RP server figuring I might find a more casual guild experience, with an average older age -- which I did. There are huge downsides, though. :)

I really am sorry for any of you that wants to play male characters in WoW.  They're hideous.  Trolls are the only ones I like, with Humans and Dwarves being meh.

The Tauren males look decent, as do the humans.

But WUA, why the fuck are you on an RP server with any general chat channels on? I blogged on this site's WoW blogs about that shortly after the game came out. It was a fuckfest of one-legged retards having a fart-kicking contest.

On WoW's males:

Humans look okay, gnomes look alright in a cartoonish way.

Trolls and undead also look alright, in their own way. As do Dranei and the cast of Dragonball Z Blood Elves.

Tauren, Orcs and Dwarves look good. As do Goblins.


Night elves look like arse. And not good arse, either.

Tauren and Troll male toons are the best of the lot, but too bad for me their starting areas suck in comparison to Alliance ones.  So, I wind up with mostly female toons.  My main, a human warlock, has been hit on clumsily a few times; it's been human paladins rather than night elves who were the horny buggers, though.

FWIW, here's a pic pre-BC as I was rather pleased at the look I finally achieved through the AH.  The BC upgrades pretty much made it obsolete since "it's better to look good than it is to feel good" doesn't apply to really phat l3wtz:

Orcs, both male and female, are my favourite look.  Troll and Cow People aren't too bad either.  The dwarfs look just like every other game dwarf I've ever seen.  Ho Hum.

I used to /leave general every time I created a new toon, but then I thought of something.

Now I just make fun of all the idiots.  They are easy targets, it's fun, and they just might learn something.  Not 99% of the time, but hey, 1% isn't bad.

Or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the asstards.

I somehow forgot the Tauran.  They're fairly cool.  I didn't mention the Blood Elves or Draenei because they're new and I like their style all around.

There's just something about the chests of the ingame male Dranei models that bothers me. I'd also have liked to see more tentacle options for their heads, both male and female.

I think the Orcs and Dwarves (and Goblins) appeal to me because they're so closely based on their Warhammer forerunners. Right down to the GWAR-sized shoulderpads. Human plate looks like Chronopia miniatures.

I've yet to get a Tauren leveled over 15. I just can't get past how slow they seem to run.

They appeared to run slower in EQ too (though of course they didn't).  My first character was a halfling and I had to make all my alts short races because I couldn't stand the perception of running so slowly.  Sometimes the animation also looks slower because larger characters often have longer strides.

I think it is a combintation of the longer strides (slower animation of running) and the fact that the camera is so far off the ground.  Try this sometime:  Set your camera angle so you are skimming the ground as you run. 

Notice how much faster it *seems* you are running?

When I play my gnome mage, I get the feeling he is running faster just because the fast animation of running and the fact that the ground is going by so close to the camera.  Gives the feeling he is scurrying around a lot faster than others, but he isn't.

IIRC, the reason why the chance of Pandaren making it to WoW is very remote is because of China's law. I think their govt doesn't allow depiction of harm coming to their beloved species whether virtual or real.

They could give them a totally unbalanced racial ability then, not like that hasn't happened in the past.  Or, have them change into humans when being damaged, otherwise they can run around looking cute between fights!

In EQ it was the same.  I played a barbarian and then a dwarf for awhile - and dwarves "felt" far faster.

We know of course the run speeds are the same.  But the turning radius of the larger avatars always seemed crude too in pvp.

It's the PVP thing. Imagine what passes for the Chinese (or Chinese-reading, anyway) media getting hold of the story of the online game where the objective is to kill Pandas!!!!!one1etc

I would, but I'm not up on my knowledge of checking-Chinese-laws. I hadn't actually heard that rumour, though.

Tons of chinese laws actually exist for the protection of pandas against poachers. The penalties range from prison time to...death. They don't really fuck around with this issue, but I think the idea of a media depiction of pandas getting harmed isn't illegal. I don't think it would be popular though.

That's easily fixed though, give the immunity to all dmg types as racial  :-P

I've got a male nelf hunter and a male human warlock. I play on a PvP server, so I've never seen anyone try to talk in character. I hear about RPers doing stupid things like trying to make friends with the opposite faction guards (with predictable results).

The nelfs are a little weird looking; their arms are too long and their hands are too big, and I don't like any of the hairstyles.  I display my helm graphics. I'm not too satisfied with the human model either. If you try to make a clean-shaven human male, the upper lip is messed up, and he looks like he has down syndrome. Mustaches are a frustrating necessity. If I were rolling my hunter now, I'd roll a dranei. If you go without the klingon head or the face tentacles, the model looks like Dr. Manhattan from "Watchmen."
