PS2 still topseller

The Xbox 360 outsold the Wii, which outsold the PlayStation 3.

That, in a nutshell, is how the crucial holiday shopping season went for the video game industry's latest consoles. But that battle does not tell the whole story of a curious December.

Over all, the industry sold $3.7 billion of hardware, software and accessories in the United States last month, up from $2.9 billion a year earlier. For the full year, sales were $12.5 billion, the industry's highest returns ever, according to widely watched figures released Thursday by NPD Group, a market research firm.

During December, Sony in particular turned in surprisingly strong sales — but not for its new PlayStation 3.

In a development that industry analysts said spoke to the strength of the video game market and the lure of low prices, the best-selling console during the holiday season in America was Sony's six-year-old PlayStation 2.

Americans bought 1.4 million PlayStation 2s during the period. That was more than the Xbox 360, which sold 1.1 million units; the Nintendo Wii, which sold 604,000; and the PlayStation 3, which sold 491,000.

The public at large has caught on to the strategy of buying a console at the end of it's lifecycle and rolling around in piles of cheap high-quality games.

It's $129, and that's if you buy it new.  Plus there's a huge fucking library of games, many of them dirt cheap now.  Is it really a surprise the PS2 is still selling well?  Hell, they've still got potentially good games like Rogue Galaxy and God of War 2 coming out soon.

After playing Guitar Hero for the first time on New Year's Eve, I was sorely tempted to buy a PS2. I decided to wait until April when GHII is due for the 360 and buy one of those instead.

I couldn't get your brother out of my house yesterday. The good news is, you might be more musically inclined then him.

My sister bought my nephew a PS2 for X-mas.  Why?
1) The 360 was 'too damn expensive.'
2) The Wii  - 'looks insteresting but there's not a lot of games.'
3) The PS3 "HOW much?"
4) Guitar Hero and Madden.

I really can't argue with her on it, either.

I am among them.  I contemplated buying an X360 for a month and opted to buy a PS 2 instead.  I'm glad I did.  The games are pretty enough for my tastes, they're reasonably priced, and I bore of them in 2 days.

Less money spent on titles that hold my attention a couple days = win!

I was actually about to post in this thread that I was going to go out and buy a PS-2 this weekend so I could play Guitar Hero but since I have been now informed that it will be avail on the 360 in a couple of months I think I will wait on it.

I'd say if you don't have a PS2, like gaming, and specifically like the kind of games the PS2 has available, you should definately buy one. The library is positively huge now, I'm still finding old games I enjoy even though I've had one for ages (hell I've had 2 since the small one was brought out). Right now I'm staying away from the current generation because I don't feel they are worth the money. You're paying inflated prices for early adoption and only to have access to a few games. If you're only buying 4-5 games on a PS3/X360 you're looking at ~$170 per game, and that's just crazy. Eventually one or all of those consoles will make sense, but that time hasn't arrived yet IMO.

Shit, I considered buying a PS2, and I already have one, and a PS3.  I mean, it's $129.  Who the fuck doesn't have one already?

I remember one of the holiday-rush stories about people rushing like assholes to get a GBA SP this past Black Friday.  These are the same people, I think.

I don't anymore. We donated ours away and then had to buy DVD player for bedroom (as it was serving that role in that room)...

OK, but do you have any other consoles?  Killjoy traded in his PS2 for a Cube.  So now he's got a Cube, Xbox, PSP and a 360 but no PS2.  I cannot figure out why, even after many interrogations.

Only thing I can see a GC over a PS2 for is if you had kids or a SERIOUS itch for Mario/Zelda/Metroid, but you'd do better to hold out for a Wii at this point in either case.  I guess the main reason to trade in the PS2 is because it's retained its value relative to the XBox?  Otherwise I'd have sacked the XBox instead, especially if I already had a 360.

XBOX in the living room and a Dreamcast in the spare bedroom... ...the Dreamcast probably gets as much use as the XBOX (though FIFA 07 is still on my playlist...)...

I've gone through a few PS2's over the years, and the last one I had just konked out. Instead of buying another one, that's what kind of pushed me to buy a PS3 first (out of this batch of new releases).

Yes, if that was a Wii, it'd be in my room right now.

But yeah, old.
