Title: Another one bites the dust - quest for reliable laptop Post by: sinij on November 07, 2006, 08:59:19 AM My elderly mother managed to destroy another laptop, 2nd in two years. First one was dropped off the bed, this one had her coffee spilled into it. She uses her laptop to read books, check email and do some ebay shopping, so technical characteristics are not important aside from it being Windows machine, since that what she "knows" how to use. So I was asked to buy her new laptop and I want to buy her ultra-durability laptop that can be dropped, spilled on and cleaned by washing with a wet rag. Any suggestions?

I made some calls about this laptop. You have to call Itronix (recently purchased by General Dynamics) at 1-800-441-1309 and talk to the pre-Sales dept. They do sell to private parties. Btw, the one you have a link to sells for $4330.00. I would also recommend looking at the Toughbook (http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/home.asp) by Panasonic. The main downside of that route is just that it can be a bit inconvenient for mom to have to keep starting scratch when her last laptop goes kaput.

At some point I actually HAVE to buy a laptop for my 2nd and 3rd year classes, so I figure I'll get it when I start so I can take notes easily. Being left handed and writing notes is a pain in the ass. Anyway, I have a desktop for gaming, so I really only need my laptop to run word and maybe photoshop at the same time. Suggestions? I've been looking at Dell, but their range is confusing me to no end. Sometimes I don't see the difference between models. Let's all remember I'm from Canadia so quoting prices from Dell.com doesn't mean much to me.
I really have no budget, but since it's only for word and what not, I suspect it shouldn't cost more than $900. I'd be willing to look at other companies too. Just don't know what's out there. |
