Title: Happy Halloween!
Post by: Signe on October 31, 2006, 07:19:58 AM
I usually wish people here a happy whatever the occassion is but today I can't be arsed.  First kid that comes to my house tonight gets the whole bowl of candy then all the lights go out and I start shouting, "GO AWAY YOU SHORT BEGGARS!", from my comfy chair.

I don't think anyone in my house bought candy this year. Oh well.

Maybe they'll take canned goods or ready made meals.

Happy Halloween!

I don't treat the munchkins, I treat myself.  I'll indulge my pagan leanings throught the day, I've dressed gothy, and am going to sushi for lunch.  It shall be a good day.

Today I left the house wearing all olive green, but when I got into the sunlight I realized my "brown" socks are actually eggplant-colored. I am apparently dressed as the color-blind today. Happy Halloween!

1 big bag of Nerds/Laffy Taffy
1 bag Snickers
2 bag Butterfinger (wife likes to eat these)
1 giant variety pack of M&Ms

Yep, we're the house with the good stuff.  Should have bought some Skittles though. The wife likes to give the little princesses tons of candy.  I have a feeling we might run out this year, even though it seems like we get less every year.

As for me, I'll probably be finishing up my winter lawn until they start arriving.  Hooray for shoveling top soil over rye seed.

Today is our 4th day in our new house, so I loaded up on candy to make a good first impression on the neighborhood kids. I made sure to buy all my favorite kinds though, in case we don't get any customers.

At least half my office is dressed up today. I came as a disgruntled commuter...went from 6-8 minutes from my apartment near work to 75 minutes today. I may start randomly shooting people in traffic until I thin the herd out to an acceptable level.

2 bags of Nerds
4 bags of mini Snickers
2 bags of mini Butterfingers
2 bags of Reeses Cups
2 Bags of Rollos
2 bags of assorted mini bars

Crap.

I dont think I have enough.

Back in the day, I'd have needed that much in this neighborhood I think.  Parents are coddling their kids too damn much.

I imagine I won't need anywhere near that much. I think we got 2 groups last year and had asstons of candy left over.

I hated my old house on Halloween. It was in a valley essentially, probably 10 blocks of flatness in a hilly area... Everyone drove to the flatlands and trick-or-treated there.

First year we went through 12 bags of candy. Been 6 or 7 the last few years.

I'm guessing we get 2 or 4 trick or treaters max this year.

Christine and I have packed up Elena and taken her down to the grandparents to hide from the Guisers.

Too tired for it all this year.  Bah.  And, indeed, Humbug.

Where's your house?  I need to stop by.

*considers how many costumes can be scrounged up on short notice*

... and a few of my sisters, too.

Ok. I've been discussing this in the office and it seems that people think halloween is some kind of "Treat or I'll give you a Trick" scam.

The kids clearly ask for a "Trick or Treat?"

Thus, I advise flipping a coin. Heads, delicious candy. Tails, punch in the face. Or maybe a needle in a candy bar. Mix it up some. Make the kids work for it, make them scared on this harvest festivity.

Was just discussing this with my Canadian sister in law.  Over here, Trick or Treat refers to the fact that those guests or guisers are required to tell a story, or a joke, or do some 'trick' in order to get any sweeties.  Technically, you're allowed to chuck someone out with nowt if they don't dance like a puppet.

Apparently, that's not how it is in Canada.  Strange.

Yeah, right.  Go on and chuck them out with nowt and see how much TP they can cover your house in and how many car windows get soaped before the coppers arrive.

I have no idea what you are talking about.  Is this a "Newfie" thing perhaps?

...

A Torontrian, a Nova Scotian, and an old Newfie went into a bar and each ordered a beer. Each found a fly in their beer.

The Torontrian looked in his beer and said, "Hey bartender I have a fly in my beer. Give me another beer."

The Nova Scotian looked in his beer, found the fly, reached in an picked it out and continued drinking.

The old Newfie looked in his beer, saw the fly, grabbed it by the wings, shook it over the glass and yelled, "Spit it out!"

We kept all the downstairs lights off in my house, and my room is on the back of the place. While I was home with a buddy watching some TV, I think a single person came and got candy from my mom before she left. The one bag we (she) bought this year is practically still full.

Or it was until I started sniping from it.

Greatest Halloween costume ever? (http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1719034/)

OblHalloweenStory: Where I grew up virtually all the families living in the immediate area had kids under the age of 18 so it was rare that a house in our neighborhood didn't have somebody handing out candy. In fact even as kids we didn't even have enough energy to visit all the houses that were handing out goodies -- that's how many there where. One time we were so tired and parched that we asked the candy giver if we could get something to drink instead of candy and he gave us all some club soda.

I had a lot of fun, no candy though.

My enormous chin is embarassing, though.  It's why I drink.

We got one goddamn trick or treater this year. Technically it was 3 in one group, but two of them were obviously teenagers and the one young girl was dressed as Tinkerbell. It was sad, but I blame our neighbors. We were the only ones who did any decoration for Halloween (lights, spiderwebs, pumpkin), the rest of these dotty bastards did fuckall. So people see our street dark as fuck, the lady in the haunted house with shit all over her yard had her coven of black cats crossing back and forth across the street and bam, no one dares come into our neighborhood. We actually look foward to the holiday.

Fuckers.

We got at least 30 kids...it was pretty busy from 6-7:30. Had a good-sized basket full of candy that was decimated by the time it was over. Probably for the best- I bought all my favorite kinds and would have gorged myself  :-D

Title: Re: Happy Halloween!

Very similar experience to Way.  Probably got a few more than 30 though.  Pretty much all of the little kids stop coming around 7 and then you just had the older variety. And they were decently behaved and altogether not to jackassy.

My wife got absolutely floored by one little girl who told her she was "very pretty too".  Her yearly quota of cute little girls in princess outfits is filled.  I swear if we ever have a female child, her Halloween costumes will be a rotation of Disney princesses.

I don't know how many we would have got.  We went to pick up FFXII, got some Chinese take away, got caught in a traffic jam because some idiot office worker  decided that all the cones on the busiest bypass needed to be picked up on Halloween night.  There were, however, loads of people roaming our neighbourhood in costume.  Most of them looked at least 16.  We drove into our garage, went inside, left the front of the house dark and no one bothered us at all.  Good.  That was Halloween for us this year.  Excuse me now... I seem to have won a FREE* LAPTOP!

I took the kids out to my sister's place since they have a much larger neighborhood than we do. (300+ houses vs 54 lots.)  However, the wife stayed behind to pass out candy, because I always feel bad leaving the house empty when there's so few houses for the kids to go to anyway. (And I like Halloween, so I don't mind the contant doorbell noise.)

Apparently we got all the neighborhood kids by 7:15.  I, on the other hand, spent the entire two hours escorting my son, nephew and daughter around.  Wouldn't have been bad if it hadden't been so wet, or so many drunken idiots didn't think building a 5' high fire in their bronze firepits was a good idea with children running around haphazardly.

We had just under 70 kids show up. We got our first BIG dump of snow this week and it was still pretty cold so that kept a bunch at home. I was expecting a ton of teenagers since I figured the weather would keep the young'uns at home, but it didn't look like we had any kids over the age of about 12.

Still have a ton of candy left over though.

This right here is one of my worst fears.  My wife, huge Disney freak.  Poor girl will wind up rebelling just to get the damn tiara off her head.  "Why don't you dress like Jasmine today dear?"

Good God.

I miss Halloween. Been living in apartments the last few years, so we haven't had trick or treaters at all.

Some of the office dressed up - best costume prize went to a guy from QA dressed as the Blue Screen of Death.

I went curling. We won. Ate lots of jubejubes.

And yes, Sith chicks are hawt.

left the front of the house dark and no one bothered us at all.
One would think that would work. After all, if the lights are off, then don't bother right? Well, we always have a bit of fun with Halloween, some decoration, hand out candy the usual ballyhoo. But we wanted to have dinner before the kids headed out to terrorize the neighbors. So the front half of the house is dark, and we sit down for dinner, and the doorbell rings.

Ignore it

Keep eating for about a minute, then the doorbell rings again.

Ignore it.

Well, evidently the sugar kicked in because whomever it was started spazzing out with the doorbell seeing how fast they could ring the fucker.

They were gone by the time I returned with the shotgun.

I still think it would have been justifiable homicide.

The rest of the evening went great though - about 100 kids stopped by - AFTER we turned on the lights and lit the pumpkins.

Halloween always falls around the Georgia/Florida football game, so I don't really get to treat it seriously anymore. On the other hand, I get to go down to Jacksonville for the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Tradeoffs.
