Title: PS3 answer to the Virtual Console
Post by: Yegolev on October 20, 2006, 06:58:16 PM
The goal is apparently to have the entire PS1 library downloadable onto the PS3.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3154561

This is actually pretty exiting to me, being no lover of discs when I can avoid them.  The downside is that Sony isn't providing any enhancement to the old titles, which means that Vagrant Story and select other titles will actually look and play better on a PS2 with texture smoothing and fast read enabled.

Now, I don't believe for a Tokyo minute that they will actually be able to deliver the entire library, but it would be nice to not have to go Ebay-diving for rare things.

I can't think of any titles that really stand out on the PS1. Seems like so many PS2 sequels have trumped them.

As far as downloadable classic games go, I think this is the one category where Nintendo definitely has everyone beat. I'd love to replay Mario 64, Punchout, or Excitebike. It's impossible to find anything else quite like those games.

Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, or Gran Turismo? Not interested.

[edit]

But whoever has the most Sega titles will have the best catalog. Won't be Sony. Could it be Microsoft?

[edit]

Err... I forgot about that old news that the Wii was getting Sega titles too.

Sega's back catalog isn't near as good as Stray suggests. Too many 3rd parties involved. Licensing is a goddamn mess. And 360 is getting Golden Axe, which I can only assume is what he's looking for. ;)

So, Sony back catalog, eh?

More like Square, Nippon Ichi's, and Atlus' back catalog, amirite?

I liked Golden Axe, but as far as side scrollers go, I'd rather play Streets of Rage or Shinobi.

I'd agree that (barring third parties) Sega titles don't stand out as much. Coupling Nintendo's catalog with just the Sonic series would put it over the top though. Having Space Harrier and the Phantasy Stars would be nice too.

Sony will probably have a cool retro RPG catalog though.

Either way though, looking at the trailer for Motor Storm (http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=1678) gets me more stoked than an old copy of Road Rash ever would.

Having a good classic game catalog would be cool, but it's hardly a decisive factor.

Did you own a PS1?  The PS1 library is great if only for Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Bushido Blade and probably FFVII.  I'm probably forgetting some others.  Parasite Eve?

Note that those are all Square games.  keke.

So, the resurrection of old games on $600 consoles.  Cool nostalgia or herald of doom?

Of course I owned a PS1. I'm not knocking it -- Just saying that the most of the titles that stand out on it, that exhibited unique gaming experiences, have mostly been outshined by sequels on the PS2 that replicated those very experiences with more shiny.

I'll admit that the Square RPG's (as well as Bushido) stand out, but it isn't retro gaming on the level that Nintendo could offer (and just to speak on a personal preference level, I'm not the biggest RPG fan anyways).

Many new games are looking to be pretty amazing though. I'm going to have to get a PS3 along with the Wii eventually.

If there were good PS2 sequels to just Vagrant Story and Bushido Blade, I might not cry myself to sleep every night.

Thing is, since the PS2 was backwards compatible I still have most of my PS1 games and they aren't even packed away in boxes like most of my old stuff.  Every Square game that came out during the PS1 era other than shit like Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon (or whatever it was called) I've got.  Personally, playing that stuff these days just reminds me that they hit their peak back then and it's all been downhill after that.  There's probably a few games I missed but for the most part I don't see myself downloading a lot of PS1 or PS2 games.

I see myself getting pissed if they don't let us store PS1 games that we already own on the PS3 harddrive. If I can download them, I sure as shit can back up my own copies without buying a new one.

That'll never happen though - I'm fucked.

The day Sony allows that is the day they start giving away PS3's to underprivileged kids and families across the world.

So... never.

Assuming I ever get a PS3, maybe I could have a chance to play Valkyrie Profile without paying $400.

Do you own a copy of Suikoden II?  If so, maybe we could arrange an exchange program :P

Umm, you do realize they released it for the PSP right?
Not that I am a big fan of my PSP, but its a decent little portable that's not particularly portable..

The VP for PSP is fantastic.
