The stingray was being kept in a garbage bag at the fire station.

Wait till they beat it with doorknobs.

I hear pickaxe handles are the best defense against stingrays.

This just proves that Steve Irwin was a huge pussy.

OH MY GOD THEY ARE INVADING. YOU ARE NO LONGER SAFE IN YOUR BOAT!!!!

Quote
MIAMI - An 81-year-old boater was in critical condition Thursday after a stingray flopped onto his boat and stung him, leaving a foot-long barb in his chest in an incident recalling the one that killed Australian TV naturalist Steve Irwin last month.

Stingray leaped out of the water, into the boat, sneaked up on an 81 year old man and stung him near the heart? I call bullshit. Sounds about as likely as the stories people tell doctors when they arrive in ER wearing a household appliance on their penis.

Yeah, Miele really needs to put a warning on those things...

I live next to the sea. Maybe I should close the windows.

WTF?

Let me guess, that screwdriver manufacturer lost a lawsuit against a stupid fuck that did the exact thing? One of this times the judge really should laugh one of those people out of court and fine him for being an idiot. From all I read you can make a living by being an idiot if you have a good lawyer. Thats just wrong.

On topic: Don't buy that Ninja stingray story either.

Yeah, it definitely appears as though stingrays are hellbent on exterminating the human race. I am so glad I don't live near the ocean. How does this guy live, but Steve Irwin dies?

Maybe the Steve Irwin one was closer to the heart?  I think it was said that he also pulled it out, maybe that's what did him in?  Anyway, when we move back to Portsmouth, I'll get nets.  We're right on the water's edge.  Stingrays and other fishy type are completely baffled by nets!  And that way, I still get the lovely sea breeze through the house.   :-)

Did stingrays just recently have a meeting that we should maybe know about?

"Guys, I know we're usually docile, but let's just start fucking with people."
"Thank GOD you said it first.  I am totally behind this."

I'm surprised they started it.  I was expecting Whales with Aqua gear to start crawling o'er the land.

It's the dolphins (http://home.twcny.rr.com/iamthey/images/abu_dolphin.jpg), man.

I'll just put it as a link because I got in trouble last time I posted my work here ;) NSFW

Oh, I'm sorry.  The correct answer was "What is Photoshop?"

You like that picture just a little too much.

Guess things like this:

and this:

made me think such a warning label is not beyond the realm of possibility.

That last image makes me think of the machine shop I work at.  We have to heat treat certain parts, and we've got giant ovens for doing precisely that.  It's not uncommon around lunch time to see that base charge air cooler baking away right next to a large pepperoni pizza.  Beyond the obvious stuff like pizza, people also manage to create some truly impressive gastronomic delights (I've seen cordon bleu cooking in the heat treat ovens, for instance).

That would make sense. So did Irwin die from bleeding to death then? And genius plan, but I am sure the stingray community has already considered this and has taken preventative steps.

[Educated speculation:]  The stinger does a lot more damage being pulled out than pushed in.  In large part because of the barb but also because a quick insertion is a smoother movement.  Anytime someone suffers an implailing wound it is far better to leave the object in place because it puts pressure on the wounded area and reduces bleeding.  (There was a story a few years ago about a young girl who fell on her pencil which pierced her heart.  She survived because the teacher knew to leave it.)

Irwin likely tore his heart tissue by pulling the stinger out.  If the immediate trauma didn't shock his heart into stopping, he likely bled to death or his heart chamber(s) lost too much pressure to be able to pump blood.  He might have survived had he not pulled it out, but people don't act rationally once they go into shock.

[Christian Interjection]  Yes!  There is a reason for everything, turn, turn, turn!  God said so!

Or maybe that was a season.  And it might have been The Byrds and not God.

Whatever.
