Title: Nothing to play?
Post by: Sky on October 03, 2006, 11:28:39 AM
Go look on the shelf. You haven't finished them all, have you?

After a stint playing some BF2, I'm now playing through Gothic 2 again. Once I'd heard there was an expansion pack that basically rewrote portions of the game, I quit at a point I've only just passed with about 36 hours played. The expansion is interesting in that it doesn't tack on end content, it integrates a whole new major plotline into the game, adds new npcs and monsters, shakes up the basic gameplay from the very beginning of the game. Definitely worth the wait.

I like Bethesda's games, but the Gothic series has always been more interesting to me, the Elder Scrolls just seems a bit bland, randomized. It's good, but venturing into a Mayan-themed excavation site (in Gothic) alone trumps it in feel.

I'm trying not to buy new games until I build a new pc next year, so new titles like 2142 and Gothic III are off limits until then. I think I'll pick up the new-low-price CoV and Team Gizka is getting far enough along that I want to grab KotOR 2 before it disappears from shelves like Silent Storm did.

Though Silent Storm did come out in Gold format, got it for xmas last year along with Gothic 2 Gold. So that's up on the block soon for playing, bums me out without widescreen, though. Looks like a fun game, lacking a real Jagged Alliance entry in the marketplace. I think next I might tackle Baldur's Gate 2 and actually try to finish it this time, I got about halfway through with my paladin the last time I played. Playing through the first chapter or two is just so boring because I've done it with about 20 characters by now....Been thinking about GalCiv2, but there's that whole no-new-games thing...

I don't see it as a slow gaming time, it's catch-up time!

I recently went back and finally finished Oblivion. The ending was pretty good. Very epic feeling, I liked it. Next on my list of "to finish" is Hitman. I think im on the last mission. I set it aside because I didnt want to finish it to quickly, but then I forgot kind of where I was, so I have to get back in the swing of it.

Doomsday:  Amazing, it will suck you in if you like empire building in any sort of way.

X3:  Take it back.  Make something up, but take it back.  It really needs some help.  I found myself only able to trade effectively.  I had a bug in my game that every hired freighter would disappear without a message given.  Bitterness, thy name is me.

I played EQ2 last night since I found my account had 9 days play time available - very weird since I cancelled in Feb and haven't paid a bean since then.  Will I play it tonight?  Probably.  Setting and completing mini-goals is quite satisfying and I'm not in the "can't group, can't progress" part of the game yet after creating a new evil character.  First time through new Freeport is helping maintain interest too.

Reinstalled NWN and bought Infinite Dungeons.  Actually a pretty nice implementation of a rogue-like game with crazy Diablo loot.

Will probably re-sub to WoW at some point too just to catch up with some old buddies.  I expect that will last about a month, ending with them outlevelling me. <sigh>  Still, $15 for a month's entertainment is good value.

Aside from that I'm just killing time to NWN2.  Already making plans to play the main module co-op.  I think I'm actually looking forward to it (although not enough to be dissappointed if it's total arse).

I was playing Okami and then Righ found his copy of Kotor and he's taken the week off work.  So I downloaded Rappelz but only to see what I looked like naked.  I'm incredibly cute. I have an unopened box of Valkyrie Profile 2 but the Kotor thingy still applies.  I don't feel like hooking up the PS2 to another TV.  I'm used to playing games at 53" now.   :?  It's HIS fault.  I have PSU pre-ordered, FFXII and NWN2.  I just have to wait around, I guess.

I just went back and beat Zelda the WW in preperation for TP. I always quit when you had to get the 8 triforce charts and 8 triforce pieces.

Well, I'm too broke to buy anything new anyway but I'm mainly playing Civ4 and Defcon now.  I try to fire up WoW and play for literally 15 minutes before I just sit down where ever I'm at and log off.

I'm thinking of re-installing System Shock 2 just to scare the bejeezus out of myself as we approach Halloween.  I made a whole SS2 WinXP theme for my comp as a matter of fact recently.  Sounds, new icons, wallpaper, was sort of a fun little homage to my favorite game.

You know man to be honest I'm pretty insecure about that sort of stuff.  I'm not a coder or programmer in any way.  I just took a good amount of source material I've accumulated and went into my XP settings and dinked around.  I have quite a few extracted sounds and images from both games, and a few larger pics suitable for backgrounds.  I will pack them up in some semblance of order and send them to you if you like though.

Get Darkstar One. It isn't perfect, but it's far better than the X series.

I dusted off my racing wheel to play GTR2 and I went ahead and reinstalled Richard Burns Rally at the same time.

I suck. (http://www.youturd.com/rbr)

I recently got into a real oldie, Skies of Arcadia: Legends (Gamecube version- originally on Dreamcast).  Incredibly, incredibly fun- only the second RPG I've liked since the Super Nintendo crop (BG2 being the other).

On the Super Nintendo note, I'm going through FF3 and Crono Trigger again.  I doubt that any of you have beat Crono Trigger as many times as I have in the last 10 years (I'm on at least my twentieth original non-plus playthrough).

My SS2 cd walked off right after I finished the game the first time, haven't been able to play it since. I downloaded the abandon version (hey, I have the original packaging yet), but it doesn't seem to work. Dammit.

I guess this is a good place to mention my recent playthrough of Symphony of the Night.  Actually, I haven't finished it.  The Alucard Shield kinda takes the fun out.  I really should wrap that one up this week.

No... what I really should do is finish Vagrant Story.

I just started playing this again too. I tried to continue from where my last save was and didn't know wtf I was supposed to be doing and where the Hell I was supposed to go.

Also, finally trying to wrap up Oblivion main quest. I get sidetracked easily though.

I finally decided to download Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy).

Good call.

Finished. It was short. Now I need something else to hold me off.

And if I might add, it's almost more of an action title than it is adventure. Makes me giggle thinking of all the diehard adventure fan housewives out there who bought this game.

Not that I'm complaining though. The action sequences were my favorite parts. The cop chasing scene and the rooftop battle with the Oracle were the shit.

The story itself though, save for some scenes (when Tyler first interrogates Lucas is brilliant), was kind of lacking. About the level of a Sci Fi original movie. I need another fill of "interactive fiction", I think. Suggestions?

There isn't anything else like it really. Dreamfall kicks ass for little bits in a Fahrenheit sort of way. But that's it. You're gonna have to wait for Rain to come out on the PS3/360 or Sadness on the Wii. Despite the shortfalls in the script, it takes a master storyteller to cohesively write something like Fahrenheit.

Title: Re: Nothing to play?
Post by: stray on October 06, 2006, 04:57:35 AM
Well....I don't want Fahrenheit again necessarily. I'm still a fan of traditional/puzzle adventure games too. It's just that the only games I've kept up with in the past few years is the Myst series. So I'm just wondering what other new-ish adventure titles in general are good.

You mentioned Dreamfall. I'll check that out (it's about time anyways).

Have you played Broken Sword?

How about "Bone: The Great Cow Race"?

I can't remember if I ever played the first one. Looks familiar.

Sidenote: It looks like the makers of Bone have a new Sam and Max "series" in the works too. Yay.

Whenever someone says "interactive fiction", I think of text-based IF games.  I will assume this isn't what you meant, but if so I think I have a couple of links laying around... for interpreters, games and creation tools if you are so inclined.

By interactive fiction I just mean Adventure in general. Whether it's a text game, a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book, or a multimedia adventure game. Same principle, different interfaces.

Definitely prefer the latter variety though. I loved those Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid, but I pretty much skipped the text game thing entirely. Instead, I made the jump to Leisure Suit Larry and King's Quest. That Hottub scene would have been crap if all I could do was read it.

Well, there's always http://www.scummvm.org/ if you have some of the original boxes.  Seems like I read about some homegrown graphical adventure games but I can't recall where... I'll look into it.  It's that kind of day.

Seems like technology has advanced enough that text games can also contain pictures and sounds:

What a day.  Everything's coming up Milhouse.  I found the thing I was remembering that lets the industrious layabout make point-and-click adventure games: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/

They have finished games, too, so fear not.  Or do fear... not sure which.

There's a difference between a pixel hunting and having fun. But it's delicate. I dare not discuss it in detail.

Title: Re: Nothing to play?

Yes... pixel-hunting frustrates me almost as much as trying to figure out if I am supposed to type LOOK PAPER or READ PAPER or LOOK SHEET or FUCK GOAT or whatever.  I'd rather play Nethack or something else that didn't hinge on the programmer's vocabulary.  For the record, I have not bothered to obtain or play even the remakes of actual good* games like King's Quest or Maniac Mansion.  But, in the spirit of the thread title, I present Things to Do.
