Title: PS3 Price Adjustment
Post by: ForumBot 0.8 beta on September 22, 2006, 06:40:49 AM
PS3 Price Adjustment

Fresh from TGS, by way of Cubed3, Sony is cutting the price of the PS3 by 20%.  This gives us ¥47,600, $410US, or £215 depending on where you live and if you believe a basic currency conversion will give accurate information.  Also, they are only doing this in Japan, so get your mod chips on order.

Mod chips? I'm pretty sure PS3 isn't region coded. I could be wrong.

Well, if you DO need one, is it so you can play Japanese imports?  Because I don't.  I don't play games that I don't understand.  They just confuse me.

Is there some reason to think Sony would not inflict region encoding on us?  If anyone would have not bothered, it would have been Nintendo I think, but the Wii is regioned.  Must be something about PAL/NTSC.

As for why to mod, you should be able to get a Japanese machine and mod it to play non-JP games.  This could end up costing more than getting the NA one, but you'd be able to play games that you couldn't understand a bit more cheaply.  I'm not really suggesting anyone do this... or buy a PS3, even.

Just the fact that they confirmed that the PS3 would be region free for games. (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/03/23/0021243&from=rss)

At least PS3 is going to be completely backward compatible.  That's important to me.  It's ONE reason I haven't bought a 360.  I think it's despicable that I can't trash my xbox when I get a new xbox.  Anyway... I can't seem pre-order one anyway.  Schild, go ask that Smedgley bloke to find me one, please?  I bet he knows where they keep them and everything.

The PS3's backward compatibility is actually attractive for me, because I never bought a PS2. The 360's lack doesn't bother me, because I can always lug out the old xbox for the handful of titles I'd ever want to revisit on it. But if the PS3 is backward compatible, there are a few PS2 titles I'd like to play (though not enough to buy a PS2).

Smedgley would be a great english butler name. Oh Smedgley, fetch me my hasenfeffer!

I'm just embarrassed.  I thought that's how you spelled his name.

Bunnies taste like chicken.  We have roast bunny every Easter.

We should just call him that now.

Well, that's refreshing if true.  That's what I get for not reading PS3 news, that and a refreshing lack of brain tumors.  I assume this only applies to PS3 games.  If the PS3 would play PS2 and PS1 games from any region, I'd pretty much have to get one right off.  And a second job/promotion.

On backward-compatibility: the first game I am going to boot in my PS3 is Vagrant Story.  Believe it.
Also on BC: I will get a 360 when I have finished all of my Xbox games, or Something Weird happens to make room for it.
