Title: Warhammer Sept Newsletter
Post by: garthilk on September 21, 2006, 08:22:56 PM
The Warhammer Sept newsletter is out (http://www.warhammeralliance.com/index.php?page=sept2006) and I've noticed a marked improvement in the graphics IMO. Particularly in some of the Dwarf images. The careers so far sound pretty similar to other MMO's including DAOC in some aspects, but with a unqiue twist. Other than that, not a whole lot of new information aside from the Squig Herder and Engineer descriptions.

I just can't find any interest in these races. I'm looking at GW's site atm, and I want to be a Skaven or a Tomb King or *gasp* a Wood Elf. Even Bretonnian (don't like the whole Prussian/Roman motif of the Imperials....If I recall from stuff I've read in the past, these guys totally lack humor. While the Bretonnians are almost Python-ish).

Well everything I've heard so far is that Skaven are indeed in the game, fact there's a ton of concept art for them. Just that they won't be playable as part of the release is what I'm hearing.

A blend of the two worst mmos (daoc+wow) ever created. I don't really expect much from WHO. Especially with EA running the show now.

I feel safe in saying that the vast majority of the MMO's out there are worse than DAOC or WoW.  Especially if you just take the PVP from DAOC and the PVE from WoW.

Of course, you run the risk of getting the PvE of DAoC and the PvP of WoW.

The artists are seriously doing an impressive work on the goblins. The model is great, the armor is great, the textures and color tones great.

I would just make the green tint slightly darker.

The transition from concept art (http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/gameInfo/zoneOverviews/KadrinValley/images/KadrinValley01.jpg) and in-game structures (http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/gameInfo/zoneOverviews/KadrinValley/images/KadrinValley02.jpg) isn't so good, though. Mostly ruined because they didn't respect the colors at all (blue and yellow instead of red and dark green, which match much better together and looks more appropriate for dwarfs).

I also still dislike the dwarf model, textures and skintones too clean.

I agree completely, but I've been playing DAoC since beta.  I've tried every mmog released to date looking for a better PvP experience and while SB had the concept right, they blew the implementation.  WoW is also the best PvE experience I've found.  Sadly, I hate PvE.  I'm thinking I need to become an EvE fanboi, but I can't stomach the thought of starting over in an established game.

thing is with WHO you have the opportunity to start over in a PvP environment from scratch.  Newness helping balance makes that attractive to me.  Plus it's by Mythic who as Nebu says got PvP as RvR pretty right.

there is a window of opportunity in PvP games that have persistent content (like Eve), to get in before things get to askew or the OCD kids rack up PvP powers too fast.  Not sure if it's realistic to compete, but at least there's the chance of a bit of balance and progression for everyone for awhile.

From the dev I talked to at gencon they originally intended to have Skaven for initial release but they just had so much content to work on they decided to hold off on them for now. It sounded like they really wanted to have skaven vs bretonians in their first expansion pack due to all the work that went into both sides already.

That you can level off of PVP exclusively alone is going to draw my 150 or so guildmates over on release.

The problem with RvR is that eventually I start to hate my teammates, and feel the need to kill them. Plus I hate the Idea that your race determines your team. In order to play with guild/friends you usually have to pick a race you don't like.

I hated my team in DAoC also, but I figured it was because I played Albion.

I guess the newsletter is great for people who love the the IP, not much who are interest in MMOGs.  I thought the elf witches fig leafs were funny though.

I like the design choices and graphics.  I'll play if they don't cut too much features before beta and can achieve a decent lvl of stability.  I really like the class descriptions.  Just by the races, I'm guessing the orc vs dwarf war will attract the most mature players.  Maybe the human side too but you'll face the Chaos d00d.  It's a shame, I would love to play chaos.  I'm curious on the elf vs elf conflict.  Seems like the high elf will get a much higher population than the dark elf.

Anyone heard something on the race vs race flexibility.  Can high elfs reinforce humans?

Last I read about it, the races can intermix aslong as they are allied. Same as WoW currently, you start off in the Dwarf zone, but can head over to the elf area if desired.
