Title: EMEA, Russian and Australian PS3 release delayed until march 2007 Post by: Jeff Kelly on September 06, 2006, 02:53:15 AM According to several online news sources and the SCEE press release (http://www.scee.presscentre.com/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=4268&NewsAreaID=2) Sony is postponing the launch of the PS3 in the territories Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia until march 2007. Supposedly because of production shortages regarding the blue laser diodes.
Well this announcement will make the CEOs of Microsoft and Nintendo very happy Title: Re: EMEA, Russian and Australian PS3 release delayed until march 2007 Post by: Cyrrex on September 06, 2006, 04:29:41 AM Wow...four months is quite a delay. On the other hand, I'd expect the PAL markets to be secondary (tertiary?) in the grand scheme.

I'd bet the Euro market for consoles is of comparable size to the US and Japanese. Pissing off a third of your customers would matter in the grand scheme.Anyway I don't care much, I'm a PC guy and my PS2 has been mostly a dust gatherer. I'll get a PS3 around when the hair pulling about the prices for the PS4 starts. I think it may still be a bit smaller in Europe, but regardless - I was thinking more in terms of "launch day frothiness" and my general (and possibly very much mistaken) impression that the European market is slower to adopt the next gen consoles. If it truly is just a matter of lacking diodes, then why else are they delaying the PAL launches? Edit: I'm not arguing that it isn't a blow to Sony's chances, as it clearly is. Interestingly, a November launch in Europe would have also given Blu-Ray entry into the European market at around the same time as the Toshiba HD-DVD launch (and comparable pricess to boot). Japan (including Asia (*1)) - 22.22 million units (launch date: March 4, 2000) North America - 40.65 million units (launch date: October 26, 2000) Europe/PAL - 37.14 million units (launch date: November 24, 2000) On the other hand, it's not like they would delay the release in their own country so if they had to cut out a territory Europe is really the only choice. Delaying the release in Europe also gives publishers more time to translate their games. Title: Re: EMEA, Russian and Australian PS3 release delayed until march 2007 Post by: Simond on September 06, 2006, 10:24:37 AM Thing is, it's not just cutting Europe out - Sony have reduced the launch volumes from 2 million boxes worldwide, to half a million split 4:1 between the US & Japan.
Yes, Sony is launching in its home territory with only a hundred thousand units. Yes, the Wii is launching around the same time, has a much bigger selection of games, is significantly cheaper, and has been in production for months. Title: Re: EMEA, Russian and Australian PS3 release delayed until march 2007 Post by: Sky on September 06, 2006, 11:37:32 AM With all the jackasses that will buy a PS3 just to ebay it for profit, it's really no use to bother thinking about one until next summer anyway. Not that I'd advise buying 1st gen Sony hardware at any rate...
Title: Re: EMEA, Russian and Australian PS3 release delayed until march 2007 Post by: Calantus on September 13, 2006, 05:53:23 AM I imagine it would also be a bit of a pain to ship to PAL considering all the different customs and languages you have to deal with, in addition to the fact that the reagion is pretty spread out compared to the other 2. If any region was going to be delayed it would always be PAL even if we outnumbered the US market overall.
