Title: Lay off stories Post by: Engels on August 30, 2006, 11:25:35 PM Well, it seems that the economic carnage is still not over, and the NY Times is carrying a bit of news about the recent lay offs at Radio Shack. Just when you think it can't get any more grotesque...someone raises the bar (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/31/business/31radio.html):
Quote Employees at the headquarters here received an e-mail message on Tuesday morning telling them they were being dismissed immediately. “The work force reduction notification is currently in progress,” the notice stated. “Unfortunately your position is one that has been eliminated.” Quote “If I put myself in their shoes, ” Mr. D’Souza said. “I’d say, ‘Didn’t they have a few minutes to tell me?’ ” Quote Last month, the company hired a former Kmart executive, Julian C. Day, as chief executive Quote Shares of RadioShack rose 29 cents, to $18.21. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Sky on August 31, 2006, 06:27:09 AM Goddamned stock market. Ruining the country.
I have anti-layoff advice: Don't fuck the boss's wife. Even if she's asking for it and he's fucking your girlfriend behind her back. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Engels on August 31, 2006, 08:27:34 AM Sky, honey, that's not a layoff. That's getting in the sack and getting the sack.
Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Merusk on August 31, 2006, 09:55:24 AM .. and he's fucking your girlfriend behind her back. Once they start fucking someone else they're not really your boy/girlfriend anymore. At that point you're just another fuck buddy.. treat them as such. As for the main topic. I hadden't heard anything about Radio Shack layoffs. It doesn't surprise me, though. Nobody repairs electronics anymore, anything else you need from there can usually be found at Home Deopt or Best Buy. So all that's left is their Tandy stuff, and how many people need crappy remote controlled cars and off-brand electronics these days? Radio Shack filled a niche for a good while, but it's niche is dying out. Thanks Wal*Mart and the disposable electronics market! Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: HaemishM on August 31, 2006, 10:04:01 AM Radio Shack filled a good niche badly for many many years. But other than watch batteries and a satellite tripod, I haven't needed them in almost a decade.
This, however, is screaming towards the top of the "How to be Corporate Douchebags" list. And it's a long fucking list. It's probably a really bad idea to fuck your boss's wife when she's not asking for it too. Know more about Azumanga Daioh, nub - it's one of the 5 best anime series of the last decade. No matter how many times you watch them, they never get old. The manga on the other hand is WTF? Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Signe on September 01, 2006, 08:41:57 PM I don't know what anyone is talking about anymore. ESPECIALLY angry.bob.

Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: hal on September 02, 2006, 08:37:58 PM A thought. To be discussed. This whole "find a job" as implemented in America thing is totally borked. Good useable and productive people miss jobs because they don't flat out lie on there resume? In reality you just keep applying until you get a job because you have no chance getting a job that you might be qualified for. Or that kiss of death, when you really need a job and they tell you your overqualified. I got so overqualitfyed that I ended up homeless. The spell checker let me down here. But I'm to lasy (or drunk) to care. deal with it or ignore it.

This is particularly true the higher/more skilled/more specialized you go. Blindly applying for anything and everything and lying about your qualifications is not the way to get a real job. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Engels on September 05, 2006, 09:18:46 AM Do you know what Battlestar Galactica is? Oh? You do? Because it's definately, no doubt in my mind, more niche than Azumanga Daioh. Azumanga Daioh also didn't create The New Trekkie. Schild, bro, I do not doubt that the anime cartoon has merits above and beyond BSG, but I think I'm going to have to ask you to define 'niche', since conversationally, at least, niche indicates a smaller audience, and for better or worse, I think its fair to say that BSG has had more exposure than just about any anime cartoon. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: UD_Delt on September 05, 2006, 09:29:33 AM Do you know what Battlestar Galactica is? Oh? You do? Because it's definately, no doubt in my mind, more niche than Azumanga Daioh. Azumanga Daioh also didn't create The New Trekkie. I think you may be mistaken on the comparative popularity of Battlestar Galactica to ALL anime combined, at least in the US. Quote The pilot to this series, the biggest budgeted (US$7 million) pilot ever up to that time, was originally released theatrically in Canada, Western Europe and Japan in July 1978 in an edited 125-minute version. (See Saga of a Star World for information on the pilot). On September 17, 1978, the uncut 148-minute pilot premiered on ABC to spectacular Nielsen Ratings (attracting 65 million viewers). From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_%281978_TV_series%29 To the best of my knowledge I can't think of any Anime that appeared in prime time on a major US network. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: NowhereMan on September 07, 2006, 04:13:30 PM I think Schild meant in terms of its content appeal, i.e. BSG is crazy sc-fi that only us nerds like while Azumanga is about growing up and life at school, universal themes.
That said, WTF? What were you smoking when you made that statement? Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: JoeTF on September 10, 2006, 09:45:24 AM Maybe he wasn't looking at just US?
Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Llava on September 10, 2006, 09:56:16 AM Given that this Azumanga Diaeuoaeieoh isn't on TV in the USA, or at least on any channels that I've noticed, I'd say it's perfectly reasonable to have not seen it or heard about it (I've done the latter, but not the former). BSG, however, is on a TV channel in the USA.
Worldwide it may very well be more popular. We're not in the world. We're in the USA, dammit. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Tebonas on September 11, 2006, 12:37:52 AM Those timetravelling BSG rapesquads roaming around the countryside surely messed up some of you in their youth. Only explanation for that much hatred.
BSG is on TV channels in Europe as well, never heard about Azumanga Diablabla. Anime runs in the children programs over here or very late at night though, so I might have missed it. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: penfold on September 11, 2006, 03:08:15 AM WTF is Azumanga Diaeuoaeieoh then?
I've not even heard about this on my various geek forums. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Ironwood on September 11, 2006, 03:10:24 AM Oh God, DON'T get him started.
Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Lantyssa on September 11, 2006, 05:17:50 PM Watch it. Love it. Post as such before Schild reads what you wrote...
Seriously though, Azumanga is a great series. Give it a watch if you can. Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: HaemishM on September 12, 2006, 08:18:45 AM It may well be such a great series that it cures cancer. But that doesn't mean I'll watch it. My anime gene was destroyed by watching Colorful.
Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: Lantyssa on September 12, 2006, 09:05:41 AM Watch it in the evening and pretend it is a prime-time comedy series? It's certainly better than most anything else on.
Title: Re: Lay off stories Post by: HaemishM on September 12, 2006, 09:06:21 AM It's anime. Unpossible.
