Leipzig: Molyneux admits to obscene laziness

Peter Molyneux, best remembered for the classic Black & White 2: Electric Boogaloo, says that while he feels that a motion-sensing controller is a brilliant antidote to the game industry's ills, he himself is far too lazy and self-conscious to actually use it.

"I've realised I'm an incredibly lazy person when I play games, and actually slouching back on the sofa, playing on my beer belly, is my most comfortable position. When I have to get up, it's painful. I make noises and start grunting."

I happen to agree with the hypemaster general. If I wanted to make passing motions for Madden, I'd go play catch with a real football. I play video games to veg out on the couch. I've no interest in waving my wii around.

The best part is how he talks about developers being careful with the design in this regard, yet doesn't give any examples that are surely swimming around in his massive brain.

I don't believe he has enough of a beer belly to rest a lap top on.  He's too thin!  I don't know... maybe he lives in America now and has been super sized.  He should have stayed in Guilford.  The resturants there are dreadful.

Well Nintendo did say you can play the games either the normal control pad way or by using the Wii motion control.  So if beer belly vegfulness is your thing, then enjoy.  Not for me though.  I want to be there swinging my katana or shooting people with the Wii motion controller.

He's getting older. I share he's pain.

I am getting older, too, but I get pain in my hands playing Ninja Gaiden with a traditional controller.  It might do me some good to wave my arms around instead.

You're so dainty and fragile.   :-)

Nobody spot the flaw here? It's the classic case of the game designer who designs games for themselves. That's not going to cut it as you get older, because the average age of games players is being kept below the aging designers by new gamers joining the fray. You have to design things for a target audience, and if a substantial proportion of the gaming world wants twitch combat and integrated voice comms rather than IRC in MMORPG style games, it may suck for the old MUD designer to play, but he's supposed to do a job, right?

There are thousands of designers out there that design for audiences that don't include themselves. None of them work in the video games industry, however.

I guess I spotted the flaw when I read "Peter Molyneux" and skipped past the obvious.

I'd show you dainty, if Righ wasn't watching.

What about fragile?  Would you show me fragile too?  Huh?  Wouldja?  Huh?  Huh?

No, I didn't think so.
