Anyway, I think the bit that mentioned "drunk" was the key.  It doesn't make any sense to me.  And it doesn't rhyme.

It's freestyled lyrics, they all have the same theme, but there's no rhyming.  Also, the chorus has been removed.

I know it's a lot of lyrics, maybe just skip every other version.

They come across as ther ravings of a  pedophile stalker.

They're also really, really bad to boot.

They mean that somehow has a hard-on for some statutory rape, and that someone is a hack lyrics writer.

It's so completly pedo-stalker that I'm amazed someone even argued against it enough to put $50 on the deal.

OK I think that about covers it.  Not a huge sample size but the response has been overwhelmingly in favor of my original position.  That song is a new Dave Matthews Band song, that he's been playing on the summer tour.  The lyrics are bad, but they're freestyled, he's coming up with shit extemporaneously,  just had to point that out to be fair. 


Anyway, I tried to post what I thought this song was about on a Dave Matthews fan forum, and it turned into 20 pages of flaming.  Within minutes, there were hundreds of posts, and within hours, the thread was locked, and then deleted.  I couldn't believe it, so I copied and pasted my post to 2 more major DMB fan sites, and the same reaction.  Each time, the thread was completely wiped, and my IP adress was banned.  Mind you, I never actually accused Dave of anything, just gave my two cents on what the song is about.  I told my friend and he said I was sick, so I had to come to an unbiased site that doesn't give a shit about Dave Matthews and wouldn't recognize anything by him to get a reality check.  Thus, the bet.


This thread pretty much proves, at the very least, what your average person would interpret the song to mean.  As long as they're not blinded by fanboyism.



Edit: Apparently there are some pretty hardcore rumors floating about the dark corners of the net that Dave Matthews may be into the younger ladies if you know what I'm talking about.  There's a few other live songs that never made an album, or were heavily modified, that have lyrics just as bad as this or worse.

An unpredictable outcome, to be sure.

Really, though, entering into a logical discourse of why Dave Matthews sucks hobo balls with a fan isn't going to get you anywhere.  You'll get more traction arguing Pastafarianism with a Christian Fundamentalist.

So, you wrote "Dave Matthews is a pedo" on a fan site, and got flamed? Color yourself troll. Yes, the lyrics appear to express the sexual desire of  the protagonist for a twelve year old girl. And you could reasonably suspect that Mr Matthews has something of an understanding of that, particularly if you also read the old lyric "Crash Into Me" which has similar connotations.

Never really liked his lyrics much, but he hangs out with some awesome musicians and together they make some fine music.

I had enough faith in humanity that people on a DMB discussion forum could handle the reality that Matthews might actually write a song from the perspective of a ped.

Okay, I just skimmed, but the best non-creepy interpretation I can come up with is this:  The protagonist has a female friend who he's known since a very young age, and who he's fallen into the "He's like a brother to me" trap with, but feels secretly in love with her, and it continues as they age together and he keeps these feelings of unrequited love inside his head.  So the references to the girl being young are at a time when he's young too, she's old when he's old, etc.

I think there was a similar reaction to The Police's "Don't Stand So Close To Me" song back in the day. Older men being attracted to younger women isn't exactly pedophelia, however.

I would have assumed you came to the right place, but a 2 page thread tells me a different story. For the record, Dave Matthews is a cocksucking lacktalent. Every goddamned song of his I have been forced to endure sounds nearly identical to every other crappy song of his.

He's not my cup of tea either, but I think it's sort of nice how he does so many free concerts.  Not that I've gone to any.

When he first came out, he had a somewhat fresh, funky sound, different than the rest of carbon copy pop music. The problem is that he has since continued to make the same song over and over, becoming the personification of irony.

Jimi Thing is cool. Of course, now I have to try not to think about what his Jimi Thing is and what he does with it.
