Title: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Strazos on July 27, 2006, 02:29:04 PM Just wondering what people are up to, game-wise as of late.
Eve Online (sort of) Titan Quest HoMM5 (though not as of late) Counterstrike: Source City of Villains trial (I won't be subbing, but it's nice to try out) Warrock open beta (hackers are still annoying, though much less prevalent. Also, flying vehicles are a bitch) Baldur's Gate + expansion - I've always wanted to bring an evil caster up through the saga, so I'm picking up where I left off a few months ago....this would be a lot faster if I just had a cheap laptop with which to play games at work with...but alas, bills. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Hutch on July 27, 2006, 02:34:00 PM City of Villains
A Tale in the Desert Titan Quest Mostly the above. Also getting some time are: Civ 4 SimCity 4 Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: schild on July 27, 2006, 02:34:43 PM Picked up CivCity: Rome, Summon Night and Tekken: Dark Resurrection today.
Also playing Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and Blade Dancer (I don't know why). Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Rasix on July 27, 2006, 02:42:27 PM PS2 (bulk of playtime):
Shadow of the Colossus: Very good, but makes me sad to play it (haven't touched since Shadow Hearts trilogy arrived in the mail). Shadow Hearts series: Nearly done with 1. This is better than any FF since the SNES, seriously. PC: Deus Ex: Still a gold standard. EVE: only skill training atm, no desire to deal with 0.0 right now. Borrowed Vampire: Bloodlines from schild and beat it a couple times. Great game, especially when you have a machine that can kind of run it. I've stopped playing HoMM5 due to the, IMO, bullshit AI. PSP: Field Commander: Excellent game. I think I owe schild a review of this. Still, no reason you shouldn't buy this on blind faith; it's that fun. And playing lot of tennis. Yah, really smart in 100+ degree weather. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: stray on July 27, 2006, 02:46:57 PM Just messing around with Hot Shots Golf 4. I'm doing other things besides gaming for now.
Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Engels on July 27, 2006, 02:50:44 PM PC: Deus Ex: Still a gold standard. Did you play the 'sequel' or are you refering to the old classic? I am just wondering if anyone played the sequel and thought anything of it. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: geldonyetich on July 27, 2006, 02:50:58 PM Short answer: Only the shadow knows what I'll play next. The XFire link below will do its best to tell the tale.
Long answer: Thus Far I've played City of Heroes/Villains (subscription lapsed), Dungeons and Dragons Online (subscription canceled), Guild Wars (why DDO's subscription was canceled), Half Life 2, and currently X3: The Threat (but probably not for long). Contimplating tickling my inner game developer with a NWN mod. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? I am just wondering if anyone played the sequel and thought anything of it. Classic. I've never played the sequel. I've yet to hear that the story is worth playing through what I've heard is a terrible game. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: WayAbvPar on July 27, 2006, 03:04:43 PM Titan Quest
EVE Online Battlefield 2 Winning Eleven 9 (Xbox) One of these days I will go back and play Oblivion. And Vampire: Bloodlines. And HL2. God I waste a lot of money on games I barely play. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: schild on July 27, 2006, 03:08:37 PM No you don't. 3 Games is Not Wasting Money On Games.
3 games a week is, but I'm aware I have a problem. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Merusk on July 27, 2006, 03:34:07 PM I picked-up Dragon Quest VIII for $30 last friday, and that's been getting 99% of my gametime. Still raiding in WoW, but taking a break from the day-to-day playing as I'm sick of whiny guildmates who want you to cheese them or their 3rd alt through some low-level BS instance that's not required, or whose items they'd replace in a week anyway.
When those two bore me I've fired up MoM, Civs4 or logged-in to Eve to switch skills. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Kail on July 27, 2006, 03:36:52 PM PC: Deus Ex: Still a gold standard. Did you play the 'sequel' or are you refering to the old classic? I am just wondering if anyone played the sequel and thought anything of it. I thought it was okay. Fun enough to keep me entertained until I finished it. I didn't think the original was Digital Jesus or anything, though, so I wasn't expecting the sequel to blow me away. As for what I'm playing now, I just got a DS, so I'm catching up on those games. New Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Metriod Prime, and Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Shitty Interface, mostly. I've also been messing around playing through all the Quest for Glory games sequentially. And I fired up Evil Genius for a bit to remind me why I can't stand that game. Waffling on re-subscribing to WoW yet again. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: schild on July 27, 2006, 03:42:22 PM Wow. Tao's Adventure. We have a winner.
That's a truly bad game. It makes Blade Dancer look epic awesome. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Samwise on July 27, 2006, 04:01:51 PM I finished "tycoon mode" on The Movies this morning. Planning to make a couple of movies so it'll all be worth it.
Then on to CoC:Dark Corners and Age of Empires 3. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? You are forgetting the hardware upgrades I made to play them (1 for V:B and HL:2, 1 for Oblivion). Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Morfiend on July 27, 2006, 04:47:26 PM Im currently playing:
Oblivion, messing around with mods. Titan Quest, I havent fired it up in about a week though. Its not holding me the way Diablo 2 did. and Burnout: Revenge on my xbox360. I am thinking about picking up Prey for PC, not sure yet though. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Strazos on July 27, 2006, 04:53:57 PM Oh, I'm also playing:
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow, Tales of Phantasia, Pokemon Emerald, Metroid Prime: Hunters on my DS. I also have Gunstar Super Heroes (GBA) and Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes (Xbox) on the way from Gamefly. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Occasionally I've been playing a few rounds of CS:S, The Ship, or Slay. Logging in to Eve now and then to check skills, but that's about as far as that goes. I'm trying to be good and resist buying any new games until after AGC since I have way too much to do and way too little time to do it in until after then. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Yegolev on July 27, 2006, 06:23:00 PM Lots of damn work. AIX Jones and the SAP/Oracle Upgrades of Doom. I can't be too irritated, though, since the 96-hour upgrade of the production system I worked on last week went rather well, only blowing the window by about 12 hours and going into Monday. Then I started on-call that Monday morning, so I have been working out of the home office this whole time and haven't gotten dressed since the 18th. I guess that's pretty sweet outside the lack of sleep.
In between saving The Company, I play a few games. # PC active: Titan Quest -- I have long since burned out of D2:LOD, and this is pretty refreshing even if it's a buggy-ass system hog. EVE -- I'd tell you what I have been doing except it would violate corporate security. Or something. # PC idle: Oblivion -- Might start playing again soon, depending on how TQ goes. Thinking about trying to install and run Sam & Max Hit the Road. # PS2 active: Atelier Iris 2 -- This game is fucking awesome. You might not understand how so if you don't play a lot of JPCRPGs. We <3 Katamari -- Still setting records. Still need to roll up the King and Queen. # PS2 idle: Shadow Hearts 2 -- Also fucking awesome. Will restart once AI2 is done. # PS2 recently finished: Grandia III -- Terribly mediocre. # Cube semi-active: Fire Emblem -- Everyone else in my house hates tactics games. Even the dog. Killer7 -- It's actually pretty cool, but maybe not deep. Pikmin -- I don't like Pikmin. Sorry. I play it on request. # Cube forbidden: I am never, ever playing Mario Kart:DD again. Sick. Of. It. # DS: Princess Peach # Xbox active: Phantom Dust -- You need to play this game. I replaced some of the battle music with "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" and "The Ecstasy of Gold". Rock. # Xbox idle: Cthulu -- I'll play it again one day. # Xbox recently finished: Castlevania: Curse of Darkness -- My second favorite, after Symphony of the Night. I am pretty sure I am forgetting something. You see, Mr. Powers... I love gaaaaaaames. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Signe on July 27, 2006, 07:23:42 PM I stopped playing everything mostly while I got ready to move. Then we moved and I didn't play anything. Then I wasn't playing anything while I found new places for all my old stuff. Now whenever I sit at the computer to play a game, I just sit there. It's hard to get started again. Almost every MMO I have has mods and I forget what they do.
Sometimes I stare out the window at people playing golf. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Riggswolfe on July 27, 2006, 08:50:58 PM I have been going through a PS2 RPG kick lately.
PS2: Recently Finsihed : Dragon Quest VIII. Well. mostly. I need to do the extra content and re-finish it. Working on: Suikoden IV and will play V after. IV is fun, though the storyline is kind of boring. I hear the story in V is better. I fired up Magna Carta: Tears of Blood. But I kept saying "Damn that's a cute chick." Then it was a guy. This happened with damn near every character. So I have put that one up for now. Other than that I am playing alot of console co-op with my girlfriend. We did Halo 1&2, and Perfect Dark Zero. We're now playing the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance series. I need to find some other good RPGs. I have kicked around picking up the Shadow Hearts games. Or maybe the Xenosage series... Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Hoax on July 27, 2006, 09:17:21 PM Lessee...
TitanQuest has pretty much died for me, never was the right level with others some classes are so much better etc. I was running another build through to 2nd difficulty and I made it towards the end of act1 & got bored. RayCrash is pretty fun, once you get good at it. I'm fairly good now adays and the skill elements are entertaining me for now. The game is shallow and pointless and I will get bored soon. At that point it may be time to figure out wtf happened to Gunbound they made North American servers and it was more complicated then just logging back in. I haven't played since then. I've also got Gunz on my desktop, but I haven't gone back yet, I dont know if I feel like re-learning butterfly right now. Still haven't broken down and read the EvE forum (which will undoubtedly lead to a resub) nor have I bought Source yet even though I know I should. I think I may try that Navy game w/ the 10 page review that Stormwaltz or somebody posted but it sounds like it may be too complicated/slow to keep my interest. On the PS2 we're mostly playing World Cup 2006, I miss Street2 some times and dread whatever day in August it is that the new Madden comes out. Although tbh American Football is one of the least fun sport's video games there is. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Galactic Civilization 2, didn't leave my hard disc since I got it. HoMM5, when I can't see space ships anymore for a change of pace. ADOM since there is finally a MAC version and I can put my powerbook to gaming use. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Fight Night Round 3 - I like this game so much that I wrote a 4 page review of it for no reason whatsoever. Oblivion - Technically haven't touched it in about a month, but I will get back to it. I promise. Maybe. PC: HL2 - Not sure why. I'm a bit jaded with all my PC games lately. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Children of the Nile NWN CoX EQ WoW Oblivion No particular order there and EQ has pretty much fallen off the list once the catasses and grind killed my will to play. There's also the occasional bout with my aging PS1 and DC games when I get real bored. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Riggswolfe on July 28, 2006, 06:14:34 AM On 360: Fight Night Round 3 - I like this game so much that I wrote a 4 page review of it for no reason whatsoever. That game has gotten more play on my 360 than any other game, even Oblivion. I have no idea why it is so damn fun but it is. After you cause your first flash knockdown, or get your first win by bloodying the other guy, you're hooked. Or at least I was. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? I don't even know how to do a flash KD, prolly cuz I haven't even looked at the manual yet. But damn, it is a pretty game and the actual boxing part works just like you'd want it to. I've only just gotten into it, and I'm already pretty sure this will go on my all-time top 10 list. If I had such a list. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: GenVec on July 28, 2006, 06:56:42 AM Picked up Dawn of War and Winter Assault after months of putting it off. Single player campaigns were pretty good, but after three games online I swore i'd never touch it again.
Tried Heroes of Might and Magic V and got to the Warlock campaign before quitting because of the overwhelmingly cheesecake plot and voice acting. Devoted a week to Silent Hunter III, which i'd describe as the most innovative title i've seen this summer. I've never played a sub sim before, and the amount of detail that went into that thing is amazing. That said, being a German U Boat captain after 1942 sucked balls - and the game models it perfectly. Quit playing after a week. Went through three Gal Civ 2 campaigns just to play around with the AI and see how good the AI's game theory is. Had a bit of fun, but preferred Civ 4 for single player, and online. Tried Wurm Online. The appeal of being able to dig a ditch in an "MMO" (sort of) wears off pretty quickly in a game without such extraneous features as... character models. And now i'm flailing about aimlessly looking for the next big thing. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Surlyboi on July 28, 2006, 07:03:18 AM CoH
Oblivion Lots of work Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Riggswolfe on July 28, 2006, 07:32:51 AM Yeah. I've only just gotten into it, and I'm already pretty sure this will go on my all-time top 10 list. If I had such a list. It basically works just like in real boxing. You essentially get really lucky and hit the other guy perfectly. If there is a way to do it on purpose I don't know. I've had the game since release day and probably done 3 flash knock downs and been the victim of 1 or 2. In every case it was basically a punch landing right on the other guys chin. Usually an uppercut of some kind. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Sky on July 28, 2006, 07:33:56 AM Oblivion - I'll finish the main plot, someday.
BF2 - Fear the 'nade launcher. But since my cable is out and my sound is gone (soliciting feedback in the $1500pc thread, plz), nothing. I got another bunch of games from my dad for the xbox, but they're mostly shooters. Dipped into Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which wasn't too bad (except for the whole shooter with thumbsticks thing). Also played a little bit of Enter the Matrix, which annoyed me (no camera control). Fight Night makes me want to buy a 360, I love me some boxing. Rocky for the xbox wasn't too bad, other than the clay avatards. So basically I'm just playing guitar right now. Learned Betterman (Pearl Jam), Ice Cream Man (VH), and bits of Dead Skin Mask (Slayer) and Don't Stop Believin' (Journey) last night. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: HaemishM on July 28, 2006, 08:35:58 AM The last month or two I've played:
Call of Cthulu (X-Box) Finished it, totally worth the time and effort. Killer 7 (Gamecube) - Couldn't make it out of the first hour before sending it back NFL Head Coach (X-Box) - Review coming on Game Angst when I can get the time to write it Hitman Blood Money (X-Box) - Review already on Game Angst Ghost Recon 1 (X-Box) - Fun, but I got it for $3 used, so it could suck and I'd still get my money's worth UT2k4 - At work during lunch... because it's still one of the best multiplayer shooters around Games I got cheap and want to play but haven't done much more than load up: Crimson Skies (X-Box) Deus Ex 2 (X-Box) Top Spin (X-Box) Obliviion (PC) - Borrowed from a friend and haven't touched it yet Games I'm playing the most: EA's FIFA World Cup 2006 Germany (X-Box) - I got the futbol fever. Other than graphic slowdown, the game's damn good. The Movies: Stunts and Effects (PC) - Finished a tycoon game for the expansion, and am in production on Episode 4 of the Stalin Monologues. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: WayAbvPar on July 28, 2006, 04:18:34 PM The actual gameplay is about 10x more complex (TONS of things you can do), and the different game modes (Cup, League, Master League, etc) are far, far deeper. Team management, formations, attack and defense strategies...
If you liked FIFA (which I did), you should LOVE WE9. It is a hell of a lot harder at first, but when you learn some of the sweet moves it is beyond fun. I highly recommend going through the various tutorials. I didn't at first, but checked them out a few days ago. I am a MUCH more dangerous scorer now. Youtube has a bunch of gameplay videos. I saw one with Cristiano Ronaldo (who I fucking despise) dekeing in and out of a field full of practice players, doing all sorts of ball tricks and whatnot. About halfway through it, I decided I HAD to buy it. FIFA is much more arcade-y; WE9 is more of a sim, but has far deeper mechanics even for player control. Dawn of War:Winter Assault is fired up occasionally, as is TA Spring. TA Spring doesnt get played as it used too, a new version screwed up the AI that my mods, and a fix only came out recently. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: voodoolily on August 05, 2006, 08:42:48 PM I'm still playing Lost in Blue on the DS. I've decided it's more fun to hunt, fish, and gather twigs and fruits than to get off the island, even though I already have the key to the boat in the bad guys' lair. So I'm going for the "survive 365 days" ending.
Also playing Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, which for some reason I hadn't noticed existed until a month ago. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Stormwaltz on August 06, 2006, 02:07:24 PM Work being what it is, I only play the Sims LARP on the weekend. By which I mean, I see my lonely wife and rapidly developing larva, mow the lawn, and do the laundry.
My shelf of games I bought but haven't played now includes: PC Act of War: Direct Action Auto Assault (never activated sub) Civ IV: Warlords DropTeam (http://www.battlefront.com/products/dropteam/overview.html) ES: Oblivion Galactic Civilizations IV Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday Hegemonia: Legions of Iron Red Orchestra Rise of Legends X3 (via Steam) PS2 Dark Cloud 2 MS Saga: A New Dawn Steambot Chronicles Warship Gunner Wild Arms 4 Xenosaga Xenosaga II Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Rodent on August 06, 2006, 04:01:41 PM Ever since I cancelled my WoW account I've been going through Snes RPG. Currently at Chrono Trigger.
Also working on New Super Mario Bros. and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the DS. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Sky on August 07, 2006, 07:06:19 AM Since my pc has herpes already I just bought Star Rangers 2.
Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Driakos on August 07, 2006, 05:22:27 PM PC Dawn of War - Winter Assault is taking up most of my time. I haven't braved gen-pop online, just playing versus friends at the moment. Great game. WoW - For less than an hour in the past week. Yet another guild busted up, I can't take building up again. Almost two years of build and fall. What kept me going was hoping to see all of the Raid stuff (never have gotten to in any MMO). Now I just don't care anymore. I'll pretend I saw it all with our ZG runs, and limited MC success. Maybe when the expansion hits I'll get busy again. I could join random guild X I guess, but then I'd feel like a traitor. I guess not logging in is sort of dodgy too, just doesn't feel as dirty as switching teams. The Ship Dwelling on whether or not to fire up CoX again, just for a few weeks of fun. 360 Burnout Revenge Battle for Middle Earth II Dead Rising Demo DS New Super Mario Bros. Metroid Pinball Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Signe on August 08, 2006, 07:35:14 PM I just dl'd the Dark Messiah demo so I guess I'll play that for a bit.

Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Signe on August 09, 2006, 09:16:30 AM Sorry about no linky. I just assumed everyone already knew. You lot always know everything before I even know anything. This game is so fucking dark it gave me a headache.

You lot always know everything before I even know anything. This game is so fucking dark it gave me a headache. It's August. I don't know anything. What does the sun look like? Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Strazos on August 09, 2006, 10:05:31 AM Demo was pretty cool, if slightly unstable. You basically get to play in the area showcased in the videos released on Steam awhile back.
It seems neat, in that you don't pick a "class." Instead you pick whatever skills you like, so you can make some sort of Hybrid character if you like. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: naum on August 09, 2006, 10:37:37 AM PC/Mac

Post by: Yegolev on August 09, 2006, 11:11:02 AM Arx Fatalis was beaten up by my later-than-v23.xx Nvidia drivers, so I guess I will have to write that one off, unless I decide I can deal with missing textures.
EVE and Atelier Iris 2, mostly. Dabbled in DOA3, Phantom Dust, Gish demo. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Righ on August 10, 2006, 05:05:58 PM Mac: Titan Quest, Oblivion, WoW. Under Windows XP of course. Except WoW, I can accept the frame rate hit from running that under OS X.
PSP: FIFA World Cup 2006. Maybe I'll see if I can get Alpha Centauri & Alien Crossfire to work on a modern system or load up an Amiga emulator. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Signe on August 10, 2006, 06:15:56 PM Why emulate? You have an Amiga in some box somewhere.
Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Righ on August 10, 2006, 10:01:24 PM I fear that the Amiga 3000 and matching C= monitor would make for a poor laptop.
Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Nija on August 11, 2006, 12:26:26 PM I fired up Red Orchestra about 2 weeks ago after a year+ leave of absence. There are close to a dozen very good maps now. Probably 50 maps total, but 12 very worthwhile ones.
Great game if you like slower paced FPS stuff. They have armor deflection angles working on tank armor now. Tank battles are neat-o. Title: Re: What are you playing in the Dog Days of Summer? Post by: Rhonstet on August 11, 2006, 04:55:45 PM Chromehounds and Dead Rising. I check XBLA every week or so for new demos. Civ4 usually gets a visit once a weekend when I have enough time.
