"Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass -- A bluesy, Jersey Shore sound.  I heard it on the oldies radio today on the way home from work. Classic tale of a beautiful serving wench who only has eyes for a sailor, who is himself, married to the sea.  Poor Brandy.


"Brand New Key" by Melanie Safka -- Sounds like it's from the 1940s.  It's also dare I say it...cute, with delightfully suggestive lyrics. 


 

Hell, "minor hits from the 70's" is about all I listen to. Or songs from that decade that weren't even hits at all. My favorite album is probably "Marquee Moon" by Television.

Just about any punk during this period is worth a damn though (can't say the same for the 80's....Or whatever that shit is that comes after that). Whenever the mainstream is cranking out shit like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, or Disco.....Or worse, this guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCZGqcMZ6Jw&search=alone%20again)....Then the underground rockers are gonna be pissed enough to write good stuff.

I'm completely dissapointed by the lack of hate.  Stray, are you familiar with the songs I posted?  Do you only listen to punk?  I mean, I kinda dig the Eagles.  I'll check out that album you listed, though I'll probably think it's arteetistic shite.

Can't recall the specific songs you mentioned, but I know of Melanie. "Candles in the Rain" is a fantastic song (but that was 60's, I think).

And yeah, Marquee Moon is arteesttic shite. It's not punk in the commonly understood sense either. More like proto-punk, before a lot of bands sounded like the Ramones/Pistols. Top reason I like it is because of the dual guitars (yes, a punk band with real musicians). The singer (also one of the guitarists), however, sounds like a strangled chicken (or to be more exact: an even more quirky, broken up Neil Young).....So it's not for everyone. If you like early Talking Heads (or the above mentioned Bowie), then you might like it.

And no, not everything I like from the 70's is punk. I like anything that rocks....Just happens that a lot the best rock stuff from the 70's was from punk bands (imho, of course). Still though, I'm Big Stones fan, big Bon Scott era AC/DC fan, big Sabbath fan...The usual. Also love Marvin Gaye and P-Funk. I also like some of the folky stuff (Fairport Convention, Tom Waits, Rory Gallagher, Tim Buckley, etc).

I love Marvin Gaye.  I also like the Stones and AC/DC of course.  One of my uncles is big into punk, and gave me a bunch of Sex Pistols and Black Crowes tapes when I was younger, so I sort of like them too.  I've never heard of Emerson Lake and Palmer, I'll check it out.  Also, if you like anything by Melanie, you should try to listen to Brand New Key.  You'd like it.

Well, only check them out if you feel you're prepared for the most over the top, excessive, way the fuck out there mash of classical and rock. Great musicians all three of them, but not for everybody, especially if you're looking for punk. ELP were pretty much the grand masters of what was called progressive rock back in the day and probably the polar opposite of punk.

As for punk (and I'm not even sure this counts), I always kinda liked Bauhaus. Don't know if they qualify though. That was about as far as I ever went dipping my tootsies into the punk river.

Ok, and The Clash as well. Again, don't know if they make the grade. Does Wall of Voodoo count?

No, I'm not looking for punk.  I'm really not that angry of a guy to really be into it.  I feel pretty satisfied and content in life, so I listen to a lot of pop and Dave Matthews Band.  But there's something to respect and appreciate in nearly all genres of music.  Emerson Lake and Palmer sounds awesome, I'm downloading right now.

Bauhaus are goth (more like the founders of it...if anyone). If they've got any resemblance or association to punk, it's more from being inspired by glamrock and Bowie.

I always thought Bush were just an angsty British 90's alternagrungepickingupaftercobain band myself.....With a pretty good guitarist (not Gavin Rossdale, but the producer dude who played in their band...Umm....The bald guy).

My first intro to ELP was the live version of Aaron Copeland's 'Hoedown'. I was hooked from then on. Keyboards are my thing, so if you like lotsa keyboards, keep downloading. And if you like Buddy Rich, you'll like Carl Palmer. It's too bad he just doesn't seem to have the energy that he once did behind the drums.

 The list of great 70s acts boggles the mind, from Johnny Winter to Eric Burdon with War. The Mac were great...with Peter Green ;) Funkadelic, the Allmans, Sabbath, Priest, Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band.

Little Johnny Jewel is a great song. I love the dual guitars, too.

I always think late 80s when I hear glam, but that was partly my experience living in LA during the downfall of glam metal. God I hated glam metal. You hain't seen funny 'til you've seen two glam rockers fighting in the street.

There are some really cheap 70's cd sets that have hits like these and others.  I suggest you throw down $6 and pick a couple up.  It's a cheap way to become acquainted with some of the better songs of the era that weren't disco.  I know both of these tunes and have fond memories of listening to them on my AM/FM transistor radio back when it was state of the art.  Oh to be young again!
