Title: New realms & fee based transfers begin
Post by: Flood on June 27, 2006, 10:06:59 PM
Front page pretty much says it all: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/ (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/)

I'm sorta surprised.  I really thought the transfers would start after the release of the expansion.  But then again, this isn't exactly a full blown release of the service either.

Five servers that you can be evacuated from, four new servers, and about 50 servers blacklisted from being able to transfered to (what's that, a bit over a third of all US servers?).

What I found a bit more interesting is that they're moving all the same language Euro servers to the same datacenters (Curse (http://www.curse-gaming.com/en/news-192-1-wow-site-migration-on-june-28th.html) story) in prep for cross-server battlegrounds. Popular theory in my guild is that they're starting off with servers in the same datacenter and possibly branching out from there.

Burning Blade
Durotan
Earthen Ring
Elune
Laughing Skull
Lothar
Medivh
Shadow Moon

... were added to the transfer list. Interestingly, the March 31st realms are 90 days old now - so there's some realms on "new hardware" that should open up real soon now. Currently the newest realms (March 23) that you can migrate to are:

    * Turalyon - PvE
    * Haomarush - PvP
    * Scilla - PvP
    * Ysondre - PvP

This is the old server hardware. (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=32550)

Just a heads up, new realms now have a 6-month window before transfers can begin, kinda cool.

It's been that way since they started transfers, I'm fairly certain.

6 months? It was 90 days last I heard. Where did you read this?

Based on popular feedback, all new realms will now be eligible for Paid Character Transfers after 6 months of being open, instead of the previous 3 months. Realms not yet open for transfers will remain closed for 6 months, meaning if a realm has been open for 2 months, it will require another 4 months in order to be eligible as a transfer destination realm. All realms which are currently available for transfers will remain available. This extension was made to allow communities on new realms enough time to establish their position on the realm before allowing other characters to join.

For more information about this service, please visit the Paid Character Transfers page. https://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account/character-transfer-intro.html

I think this was done as a reaction to an incident two weeks ago, where a whole raid group including a guy who had the sceptre to open AQ transferred to a new realm. They did this one week before the first raid on that server was going to open the gates of AQ and basically stole the opening from them.

They even opened the portals at 2:00 AM on monday just before server maintenance in order to fuck all the other guilds who didn't have the opportunity to gain rep from the opening event.

It was quite some drama.

Wow, I see. Can't say I blame them, either. I know of at least 2 new servers that've been pretty much dominated by uberguilds transferring there asap.
