Title: Hey Hal... or anyone running 2 accounts
Post by: edlavallee on June 27, 2006, 06:03:58 AM
Could you share some lessons you have learned from running 2 accounts? I am considering doing something similar to the Hal/Mushioh (mining/hauler) combo and wonder what you have learned from your experience.

I have learned that the transfer process is a giant pain in the fucking ass.  To move a character to another account, first you have to leave your current corp and stay unemployed for 24 hours.  Took me a while just to figure out how to do that (right-click yourself in the chat window, IIRC).  In order to leave your corp, you have to relinquish all roles for 24 hours; this is to prevent people from making off with corp assets so easily.  If you don't have any roles, no big deal, but Yegolev had roles related to refining.  Argh.

Once you do the deed via eve-onlne.com ($10 fee), I think it still takes a little bit for the transfer.  Also, logging into the web site seems to be "weird" after that, but maybe I didn't wait long enough.  I haven't tried to view my skills on the web in a long while.

I have access to a second natural account, so there won't be transfers necessary. Just a pal who is a bit busy for the time being and does not mind me using his avatar.

Thanks for the info, though.  I was wondering if there were any gotchas on this.

Being a noob to eve, could you express for me more on what 'roles' are?

I think its a term used in Eve for guild management rights. Like, access to certain guild management features. In Eve it is probably far more involved, as is everything in Eve.

Running 2 accounts simultaneously?

Well the golden rule is disable sound on one (or both if you prefer, but just one will do it) accounts, or a nasty memory leak will make your BSOD sooner of later.  Also play windowed and disable "Sun is occluded by ships", that causes crashes on some cards.  Both options can be found via the Escape key menu.  Nothing too it really.

2 accounts is really an enormous boon in EVE, more so than most games.  You can run your own mining ops, have a scout for your main or a personal cov-ops for warp-ins, and of course train a uber-carebear while concentrating solely on combat skills for your main.  I couldn't imagine playing any other way.

I dont have any major problems running two instances of EVE with my current PC, was going to mention the sound thing but sparky beat me to it.

Aside from stargate-lag the only machine-related lag problems I've run into have been during big mining ops when my accounts (and everyone else) have ended up in almost the same spot, lasers running, drones circling, and our hauler popping in and out.

Alt advice?

Don't get fixated on one character while they're both in space - it's easy to forget you left a hauler warping to the station when you have other things to deal with.

Recognise when your attention is becoming overstretched so you can logout the second account safely before you forget about it.

Don't kill your machine in order to run two accounts - an overworked PC will eat into your reaction time if you need to run from hostiles.

ps.
Roles - they're pretty much like access levels within a corporation, saying what you can do on behalf of the corporation, as well as what parts of the corp hangers you're allowed to access / steal from.

It's more like riding a pommelhorse made of gotchas while not wearing pants.

I probably can't give a good description, but basically they define what you can do in the corp, like Personnel or Treaurer.  My Refining role allowed me read/write access to the Corp Refining hangar.  If a corp needs someone to handle membership, for example, that role can be assigned so that the CEO and directors don't have to deal with it.  I think.  Maybe Viin or a director will elaborate.

I should clarify that you'll probably want to turn off the Jukebox in both clients, not disable sound, if you are flying in both windows at the same time.  That way you can hear someone targeting you in the other window.

Roles are something like Can Take From Divisional Hanagar 3 (Refining). They are brute simple checkboxes: either yes you can do this or no you can't. There's about a hojillion of them: can accept applications, can create new offices, can take from each corp hangar, can spend the corp's money, etc.

Titles are CCP's attempt to make role management easier. I have the Tradesman title, which sets me up with a list of roles that allows me to do market transactions on behalf of the corp. I can place buy orders for the corp, take items from the Deliveries Hangar, and a few other roles I can't remember off the top of my head. The pont is they're supposed to be a list of sensible things that work in concert allowing a Tradesman to get stuff done. There's other titles like Factory Manager or Security Officer.

There's also grantable roles. If you have a grantable role, then you can bestow that role on others. Director is a Title that has every grantable role. Only the CEO can make a Director.

2 accounts. I don't have 2 copy's of eve, i just have 2 loggins. Disable sound on at least 1 account. I had problems until I did that. After I did that I never had a problem. I do run 2 gig of ram, I really doubt EVE takes advantage of that much ram, but just saying EVE was not crowded as memory is concerned. I ran the windowed mode from eve mon. Really crappy frame rates but smooth as silk alt tabbing, i mean right now. Thats about all I can think of at the moment DH. I did flounder until I came across the disable sound thing, it was smooth sailing after that.

Just more info on the roles, but I had to make all of the titles and their associated permissions myself. Needless to say, it took awhile, especially since each role has 'view hangar X'/'take from hangar X' three times (for HQ, for your home base (which a director can set) and then all other bases).

It really is a PITA and that is one area that CCP should improve along with the mail interface.

Holy crap! Viin should get extra brownie points.  8-)

Rule number one for having an Alt: Never stick both of them in a dangerous PvP situation at once.  Some people are good enough multi-taskers to engage in combat with two characters simulataneously, most people just lose ships that way (usually both characters).  Having one as a covert ops scout for the other works well, generally, since you can generally always cloak up the one and ignore him until you've managed the other.

Like most full-time 0.0 denizens who engage in trade or industry, I have an empire alt that has never and will never join the alliance.  My only problem with Empire wars is keeping my own side from shooting up my alt when it brings out the groceries.
