Title: A Reality Show I might watch: Creating Kaos
Post by: MrHat on June 22, 2006, 08:35:24 AM
Saw this on Blue's in the little section at the bottom:

Video care of Games.net (http://www.games.net/video/player.cfm?vId=100780)

This guy is trying to develop the greatest MMO ever all by his lonesome.  And they're documenting it!

Anyways, hope he gets bought up and can see his kid again.

He's going to fail. And not just because he's living in one of the most expensive places on earth.

I noticed that too.  Wtf?

Wait a minute, did he just say his wife moved to Texas (I was listening to it from a minimized window).

Errrr.

She has a better chance of getting a game made.

He'd have a better chance if he was doing most of it himself ala Teppy w/ ATITD.

The dude obviously has mental problems.  He's lost touch with reality, and has the same feverish glaze that cultists and New Age crystal enthusiasts do.

No shit.  Especially when he spilled that line of bullshit, "I'm really doing this for my kid".

If you want to do something for your kid try acting like a fucking father instead of some jackass working two days a week at a real job so he can "follow his dream".  You have responsibilities now dickhead, and pursuing your own doomed to fail ambitions aren't on the responsibility list.  Shit, even if you're seperated or divorced I'm sure your kid would appreciate you earning some actual money to, y'know, help support him.  Instead you're living in an efficiency apartment with your buddy while you eat Ruffles and work on what is likely a half-baked, idiotic game that no one will ever play.

Priorities, motherfucker.  Get some.

You guys put the "jade" in jaded.

Yes, he will probably fail... but it takes guts to chase after a goal like that.

Guts? If he were single and had little or no care or responsibility other than his own food and shelter, then yes, guts. Abandoning your family for something as jack-shit as this? Absolute Fucking Douche Baggery. He shouldn't have wed and bred in the first place. The man needs a swift kick to the jimmy and a short sharp shot to the head. Frankly, I don't see any real innovation coming down the pike in MMOGs and I doubt this dude is going to take things in any new directions. He's building Fantasy MMOG # 1,300,506,297,338,965. Rottsa Ruck der buster.

That's just sad.  It's like a reality show on dieing junkie.  It should at least be presented has documentary on workaholics/failed artists.

Looking at what he wants to implement in the gameplay:

- Incredibly significant faction and race differences (The Deva can fly, for instance)
- A workable balance between melee and ranged, created by dynamic twitch gameplay
- A freeform, class-free leveling system which allows skills and attributes to improve dynamically with use
- Your body shape morphs to match your abilities
- Fully customizable (?) housing interiors
- Player controlled combat
- Dynamic markets
- Dynamic world, complete with tons of scripted events

These are all wonderful ideas, but that doesn't make them feasable or workable; with any developer, my first question would be whether or not they could succesfully design, test, implement, and run these concepts.

He's a guy in an apartment, with no funding, with a few other guys linked up via webcam.

There's dreams, there's pipe dreams, and then there's this. Maybe it's just the selective camera reporting, but he seems fantastically delusional. His wife and kid left him, so it's time to start wondering about his pathological focus on this game project.

I'm sorry for the wife & kid. I'm also amused at the sight of Romero being titled "Legendary Game Developer."

There's a thin line between notorious and legendary, my friend.

I'm in the process of trying to watch episode 2 (it's buffering) and thus far it's comedly gold. He claims NCsoft ripped him off. They're making a game called Aion with angels and demons in the future just like his game (Crytek engine and all). He claims Kaos is all about a 5 year story line, set in the future, with angels and demons....where have I heard that before...let's see...

Vorlons. Shadows. Babylon 5 anyone? Granted, I don't think that's the exact direction he's going, but J. Michael Straczynski could cry shenanigans from hearing his basic premise.

Actually, you know what it sounds like?

A bad ripoff of David Allen's original Horizons design docs.

That's an excellent point.  All they need is DRAGONS.

Holy necropost, Batman!

Just to make this useful: He still hasn't produced much more than a tech demo and still has no funding. GO GO HIM!

WUA is like my favorite guy on these boards.  I thought everyone knew that.  I'm a big fan of the work he does here.

Call me when he reaches the Mr. Noodles phase.

edit: oops, actually thought this was a new thread. Oh well. He still hasn't beat me in my early 20's efficiency appartment living if he isn't down to surviving on ramen though.
