Title: DS for Father's Day
Post by: Yegolev on June 05, 2006, 12:25:21 PM
Looks like I'll be getting a DS Lite soon.  The only thing on my largely-occupied-with-work mind at this moment is Lost Magic and Phoenix Wright.  Let the suggestions fly.

Gamefly might be worth a shot.

Also: Advance Wars DS, Warioware Touched!...erm, prolly some other stuff.

Animal Crossing, Brain Age, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Lost in Blue, New Super Mario Bros, Trace Memory, Tetris DS, Trauma Center, Mario Kart DS, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Meteos.

That just about covers it.

Good man, I meant those are the ones you should buy.

I should have used the quote mechanic on Straz's Gamefly suggestion.

Are those in some sort of order?  Which one was the "crafting" game?  Lost in Blue?  That must be the one I was thinking of when I said Lost Magic.

I'm done with Mario Kart for the short term.  I was done with Tetris in the late Eighties.  Meteos is a puzzle game?  Princess Peach?  Also: thanks for not suggesting Nintendogs; if it was possible in Nintendogs to ignore your dog to play a video game, that's what I would do.

Speaking from experience, I'm not sure Trauma Center is worth a full-out purchase. for $12 maybe - it's just too short.

Though, it is Very good.

EDIT - Also, the GBA library Cannot be ignored.

I have surprisingly few GBA games.  However, it was either a DS Lite or a XM/Sirius receiver.

Lost in Blue is the crafting and exploration "done right" one. Meteos is from Q?/Mizuguchi, it's good stuff - but easier than Lumines. Nintendogs is shit, you'll get bored after 15 minutes - it's the true testament to japan being bugfuck insane. I'd get Castlevania, Lost in Blue, NSMB, Age of Empires DS and oddly enough Trace Memory in my first go round. Those are my standout stars for the system. Apologies for forgetting AOE on my first list.

Meteos is a puzzle game; I don't have it myself, but I hear it's fun.

I recommend ignoring Princess Peach and picking up NSMB instead.

What is trace memory about?

I have been given the opposite advice from a Nintendo/Namco nutbar.  Seems like I will have to get both.

Thanks to all for the tips.

NSMB is way too easy. It just doesn't feel fresh or new. It's an easier version of earlier marios. The wall jumping feels awkward and numerous other things just don't fit. I haven't tried Princess Peach so I don't know how that plays.

I just got it today.  It's pretty creamy.

The DS Lite is slick.  It is really slick.

I also picked up NSMB and Princess Peach, since I got it at Target ($5 coupon, I rock) and they didn't have anything "weird" in the cabinet.  I like PP better than NSMB.

Playing Metroid Fusion on the DS Lite is painful.  Good thing I don't need to use it for GBA games.

I got NSMB and MK.  MK on WFC is silky.

All the DS Lites in West LA have been sold out already. :sad_panda: Even in the obscure hole-in-the-wall Japanese stores that never have any English-speaking clerks, let alone customers.

You can hear crickets in the games dept of the local Target.  I am on the non-asian half of the continent.  If you need some help getting one, send me a note and I'll see what's up locally.

I managed to snag one on Friday from a local Asian hole in the wall.

Now I'm in the hell of realizing the games I want aren't stocked anywhere and most places don't take orders.

Seriously, WTF is up with game stores not taking orders?

It costs money to order games custom.

PASS THE COST ON TO ME WITH A SUBSTANTIAL MARKUP. I R CONSUMER, I EXIST ONLY AS A WALKING WALLET IN RETAIL'S EYES.

I finally broke down and bought a DS Lite along with NSMB and Brain Age.  I'd like to go back and get one more game.  Which is better between Animal Crossing and Age of Empires?  Or is there another non-twitch must have game that is better then either of those?

Hm. Age of Empires is good. Animal Crossing is better as a Gamecube game. Advance Wars is very good, as is Battles of Prince of Persia. Don't forget Lost in Blue, but good luck finding it.

I couldn't decided between the two and wound up buying both.  Age of Empires' controls seem clunky to me, but hopefully I'll get used to it.  Freaking Brain Age is consuming most of my time believe it or not... when I can wrestle it away from my wife that is.

You can just use the D-pad and buttons for AoE. That's what I do most of the time. It can be hard to pick units/target squares/etc. with the stylus when everything is packed together.

Edit: fixed typo
