Title: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: WindupAtheist on May 02, 2006, 07:29:24 PM Okay, it's not really about captions. It's about speech balloons, but "caption contest" sounds better. It's not really a contest, either, since it's not as if there are prizes. Nevertheless, I supply this image.
(http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e121/GrimDysart/blank1.jpg) And will kick it off with this as an example. (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e121/GrimDysart/example1.jpg) Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Sky on May 03, 2006, 06:54:30 AM Macs are shipping with cool software called Comic Life. You can import pictures in and it formats it into a comic book (sorry, graphic novel) layout, you can drop in speech bubbles and whatnot. Combined with the MBP's built-in camera, it's fun.
Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: schild on May 03, 2006, 10:36:55 AM Comic Life sounds neat. Still not buying a mac.
Also, the above picture is not nearly exciting enough. Did you pick it because the monitor says something? Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: bhodi on May 03, 2006, 10:40:23 AM Comic Life sounds neat. Still not buying a mac. Also, the above picture is not nearly exciting enough. Did you pick it because the monitor says something? Your avatar looks suspiciously like the ivory tower picture from MTG. I had a friend who did a few of the cards, I guess it makes sense but the actual pictures are huge; He had some watercolors that were something like 15x15 and I guess they shrunk them down. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: schild on May 03, 2006, 10:40:49 AM Because it is.
Edit: It's my pre-E3 artfaggy statement about the gaming industry. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: WindupAtheist on May 03, 2006, 11:35:36 AM Keeping with the Star Trek theme, here's a better one. If you can't do something funny with this, you're dead inside.

Edit: In fact, it may be funnier if you think of the empty bubbles as stunned silence. (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e121/GrimDysart/example2.jpg) Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: WindupAtheist on May 03, 2006, 12:05:00 PM think of the empty bubbles as stunned silence. If you had just re-posted the original image with this comment, we would have had a "contest" with only one entry, an entry that would have "won" regardless of what anyone else posted, and it would have done so by doing nothing at all. It would have been Zen perfection. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Samwise on May 03, 2006, 12:07:12 PM Comic Life sounds neat. Still not buying a mac. You can do the same thing with Word or Powerpoint. Powerpoint in particular lends itself very well to laying out comics. You could even add obnoxious animated transitions to them and proclaim yourself the next Scott McCloud. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: schild on May 03, 2006, 12:07:54 PM Mmmmm? You can do this with Word?
Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: WindupAtheist on May 03, 2006, 12:15:20 PM I do it with MS Paint. Making those speech balloons takes fifteen seconds. What's the big deal?
Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Soln on May 03, 2006, 12:46:04 PM first!

Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: stray on May 03, 2006, 01:06:09 PM I just saw that episode. He actually covers up with the bedsheet.
Meaning: It's a strange thing to see a man do that. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Samwise on May 03, 2006, 01:39:44 PM Mmmmm? You can do this with Word? Insert > Picture > AutoShape > Callouts. Almost the same place they are in PowerPoint. Two benefits of using Office rather than Paint for this: 1) Antialiasing (you can see jaggies all around the word ballons with Paint) 2) Handles text better (auto-centered, automatically clips to balloon, etc) Paint is perfectly fine when nothing else is available, though. Fancy graphics editors are overrated. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Sky on May 03, 2006, 01:56:56 PM Really, though. Comic Life is the shizzy when it comes to quick and dirty comics. I just made a page in a couple minutes (mostly grabbing google images), then forgot my ftp is busted (dreamweaver not playing nice with the mactel, yay early adoption!).

Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Yegolev on May 03, 2006, 05:10:32 PM Man, I can't beat these. Maybe next time.
Maybe OpenOffice does word balloons. EDIT by SPELLING GERBIL Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: WindupAtheist on May 04, 2006, 03:25:46 PM Now this one!

(No, I don't know what I was thinking.) Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Paelos on May 04, 2006, 08:07:01 PM I don't know how to photoshop. That makes me sad.
Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: WindupAtheist on May 04, 2006, 08:09:07 PM Neither do I. Try MS Paint, you noobtard.
EDIT: Also, Paleos, imagine if you told a girl that you used a computer program to edit words into a picture of Captain Kirk being carried away by Imperial Stormtroopers, and then posted it on the internet. She'd laugh and your penis would fall off, just like if she caught you watching cartoons. EDIT #2: Fixed "she's laugh and..." typo. My penis is in a jar somewhere waiting for God to tell me when to release it. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: stray on May 05, 2006, 03:07:06 AM Monkeys, penises, stormtroopers, and the apocalypse....
...And all we get is a bunch of stupid ads about "captioning". Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Signe on May 05, 2006, 04:18:45 AM Paelos shouldn't make fun of his penis. His penis is God's way of saying, "ha ha" and that should be respected. Shame on Paelos.

Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: jpark on May 05, 2006, 02:53:28 PM This thread is a good idea. This site may not have artists like Penny Arcade - but this might be an innovative feature make a permanent aspect of the site - with a link on the front page or some such. The competition could be renewed weekly/ monthly.

Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Lantyssa on May 07, 2006, 03:01:14 PM So no one else destroys their eyesight trying to read the bubble:
I must admit a certain appreciation for the irony in us, a group of Storm Troopers from the Star Wars franchise, carrying away the famed William Shatner of Star Trek fame. Crossing continuities is always a fan favorite, or so the marketing guys say. Still, I can't help but wonder if Mr. Shatner doesn't feel like he's violating his loyalty to the Star Trek franchise, as us carrying him away amounts to a near amission (sic) to the superiority of Star Wars over Star Trek. rofl this isn't funny what a bunch of random shit. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Llava on May 07, 2006, 03:29:02 PM But destroying eyesight was the funny.
And btw it's "this wasn't funny", past tense. And whoops, I missed the d in admission. It's hard to check for typos at that size. Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: Lantyssa on May 08, 2006, 01:28:19 PM Exactly. :-P

Title: Re: The First International F13 Caption Contest Post by: WindupAtheist on May 14, 2006, 09:23:30 PM I had initially planned to post the image with the words "Bruce, man, thanks for buying me this drink! You're not so bad after all!" in Schild's bubble, and "Date rape drugs for the win!" in Bruce's. But then I figured I'd let someone else have the obvious punchline. It didn't take long. Bravo.
