Title: Turbine's April fool joke
Post by: Arthur_Parker on April 01, 2006, 04:37:35 AM
Three rumours, not really funny.

Ken Troop (Lead Designer DDO) has left Turbine to join Wizards of the Coast.

Justin Quimby (Director of Engineering DDO) has left Turbine to join Maxis.

DDO currently has 62,000 subscribers.

I don't understand, is that a real April fool's joke or are those real rumors that make them look foolish.  I didn't see anything during a brief visit to their site.

Real rumours (whatever that means), I don't expect them to publish subscription figures or comment on Justin Quimby, but I'm 90% sure Ken Troop has left and as he's well known to be the lead designer, they will have to comment on it at some point.

AC1 has a tradition of an April Fool's quest each year... this year's involved a previously relatively unused island by Ulgrim's house that's modeled after the one from Lost, with players finding a mysterious hatch they have to blow open.

I just sort of assumed DDO would do something too.  Did they?

In EQ2, there was an April Fool's quest that had a 2 hour timer and sent players hither and yon looking for strange items. However, if you just waited for the two hour timer to expire, you got the prize: a ring with +100 to all stats that was flagged as furniture.

Ken and Justin did leave...in fact you can apply for their positions on Turbines website.

No DDO does NOT have anything close to 62k subscribers lol.

1. Tele, that information was 19 days ago, it's one item listed under a heading of rumours so prove otherwise or fuck off.

2. On second thoughts, just fuck off.

Wow nice to meet you too!

A) What is a tele? Are you refering to me as a British television?

B) In response to your oh so friendly greeting. Lick the salt from my sweaty nut sack you putrid mass of festering puss.

Love ya! Ciao!

PS- I heard a rumor they have two subscribers and everyone else on the forums were trolls who cancelled their accounts. Prove otherwise or fuck off!

No not really. For evidence see my responses or postings in the WOW funeral thread.

For whatever reason having never spoken with Authur before the first thing he does is come into a thread and tell me to fuck off...after calling me a "tele" whatever that is.  Given the circumstances I feel my response in turn was quite justified nor unreasonable.

The first thing a guy ever says to me is "fuck off" and some how Im to blame for my rude response?

He told you to fuckoff because you have 45 posts in a day and no less than 3/4 of them make you seem positively insane. I'm more tolerant than most, but "fuckoff" is just the community's nice way of saying, "TONE IT DOWN, JR."

Like I said....first thing this guy says to me is "fuck off" and once again Im the insane one and completely to blame according to the "community".

As for my responses in the "other" thread I was debating with people who felt they had more knowledge than I did in the entertainment software industry despite a lack of understanding into known market research companies and how projected fiscal results by its publishing companies work. Sorry if being proven wrong got their feathers in a fluff.

There is a reason I dont debate chemistry with a chemics professor...I dont have the credentials to do so. Others might keep the samething in mind when trying to troll or post about areas they have no knowledge of. If no one likes me for that quite frank attitude...oh well.

For awhile f13 got off on the wrong foot and thought Teh H8 was what "we" were all about.  It went on for awhile.  Then we realized Teh H8 was actually NOT what we were about.  But it's still a place for Teh Testosterone.

Say what you want creatively.  But be prepared to get called on bullshit.  Be prepared to get H8 right back in the face when that's where you start.  And don't confuse making assertions with making a case.  Of course given where current US culture is right now it's understandable some folks have no fucking clue what "making a case" actually means.  But when all one has are assertions... well, start at the beginning of this paragraph.

The problem here is you've said you have a bunch of data but not shared it, and the data you have shared, like stock prices, are irrelevant.

Stock price really has nothing to do with the individual success of one game. A company can be hugely profitable and have it's stock price decrease.

If you have exact sales and subscription numbers for DDO, please just say what they are and where you got them.

"Tele" is Mediocre/Televangelist/Telemediocrity. He is somebody who likes to argue for argument's sake which tends to annoy the heck out of some people here partially because of this forum's history with SirBruce who had a similar style. Your exchange with slog on the other thread reminded people of Telemediocrity and the timing roughly corresponded to his banning (assuming he did get banned).

Bruce Woodcock/SirBruce assumed people wanted a circle jerk for a conversation, a mindless reply-bot that somehow missed the point that Monty Python's Argument Clinic was sublime parody rather than crude slapstick.

I tend to come from the Hume School (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hume) that the Intardnet is actually no different than the coffeehouses of Gibbon's and Rousseaus' day.  Assuming you can find the right virtual coffee house anyway.  f13 certainly has that potential.  The Other Site is a good example of something different.

Good conversation is not supposed to be public masturbation.  It should be spirited and contentious.  But nevertheless respectful at the end of the day. Because that's a lot more fun for all involved and we all go home with door prizes.

Agreed....especially the part about public masturbation, although I always likened it to verbal diarrhea.

However now that I understand that their "tele" references were infering I am Telemediocrity resurrected I think I prefered being told simply to "fuck off"! I mean cursing at me is one thing but calling me "tele" is simply mean!

PS-Margalis I am not ignoring your post, but simply sent you a PM since I dont care to get pulled into that thread or conversation publicly again.

If this is referring to me, Ill just chime in .
You claimed share price not changing was further indication your assertion DDO didn't sell well was correct.
I explained to you the share price would not be swayed by a few box sales either way, and did try to explain to you why.

You didn't refute that, your argument then resorted to 'I know more than you therefore you are wrong'.

Unfortunately, that still doesn't change the fact that the movement , or non movement of a share price is no indicator to box sales of a single game. And you have made an incorrect assertion.

Having said that, I personally find no need to resort to aggressiveness, although you have been consistently confrontational from your very first post, when you receive the same back I find it odd that you are in any way surprised.

Did you think handing out insults was your sole perogative?

Let me refresh your memory. I actually argued 3 points with you.

A) You claimed, due to your knowledge of business and stock markets, that Atari would have reported income from sale of DDO approximately one year ago.
I posted publically available information refuting your claim. (This assertion by you was the red flag to me that you really didnt know what you were talking about)

B) You claimed or asserted that no one had any idea how Atari would make their money from DDO and that it might include subscriptions fees.
I posted publically available information from Atari themselves refuting this claim.

C) Finally you question a stock's ability to act as indicator of a software's performance in sales and the over all profitability of a company during that fiscal year or reported quarter.
To which I answer: IF DDO had been a resounding success for Atari it WOULD have affected both their quarterly earnings for that period and their fiscal earnings for the year, and the increased financial health in all likelihood would have resulted in a small bump in share price when the announcements were made. However according to their fiscal filings with the SEC they took a loss from last year both for the quarter and for fiscal year....so their stock when down further in price. The reports on file with the SEC are fact. Their reported losses are fact. The corresponding drop in share price is fact.

Now once again Im done with this subject....in this thread as well.

Interestingly its also not what I said, which kind of proves the point. I said the SHARE PRICE would have taken into account the likely income of new releases as they are announced, meaning for DDO about a year ago. The share price will rise on an announcement of securing a decent license, because it gives a 'goodwill factor' for the companies future.
Since then obviously Atari have had to restructure debt and are currently under threat of delisting, meaning that it will take a substantial change in fortune to force share price up, something that selling a few (or a lot) of DDO boxes is not capable.

B) You claimed or asserted that no one had any idea how Atari would make their money from DDO and that it might include subscriptions fees.
I posted publically available information from Atari themselves refuting this claim.

Again, thats interesting as it isn't what I said. I said me, personally, had no idea if Atari were involved  in the subscription model or just publishers.
Mainly because I'm just not that interested in DDO to find out .

C) Finally you question a stock's ability to act as indicator of a software's performance in sales and the over all profitability of a company during that fiscal year or reported quarter.

Now once again Im done with this subject....in this thread as well.

The reports are fact, they do not, however, contain anything that implies the meaning you give them, however hard you blow on your expertise the drop in share price is due to debt restructuring cause by the fact their main bank has recinded the credit allowance, nothing to do with DDO selling boxes or not. They are also dated before DDO release, something you conveniently leave out.
And still, you fail to understand, selling a few boxes of DDO would not, in any way, change the share price given the fact Atari is currently under threat of delisting.

If I recall correctly, "fagging" is standard lingo around here. I doubt it took him longer than 2 seconds to think it up.

Secondly, it has little to do with fags really.

I know this may be a shock to you, but responding with "Flamer Boy" makes very little sense, nor does it come off as offensive as you think it does. Around here at least.

All that aside, I'd give you a 10 if this was the Vault or a Pee Wee Herman movie.
